This is an almost very good hardcover bound volume of 6 issues of 'The Philistine', in the original pale blue paper-covered boards and leather spine. The spine leather is worn, and the title label chipped. The boards are generally clean, but a few faint tiny marks. Gilt title still bright. This is Volume XII of the Philistine and contains 6 issues from December 1900 through May 1901. Covers bound in. All issues clean. 6" high X 5" wide.

Important essai dans lequel l’auteur dresse un état des forces républicaines et démocratiques en présence durant la Monarchie de Juillet, tendances qui allaient d’affronter huit ans plus tard en 1848: bourgeois réformistes du "National", communistes et révolutionnaires ainsi que le groupe que l’auteur revendique: les jeunes démocrates, instruits et résolus à faire la liaison entre la bourgeoisie réformiste et les prolétaires. Théophile Thoré (1807-1869) était un disciple de Pierre Leroux avec lequel il collabora. Avocat, journaliste, historien d’Art (il est le "recouvreur" de Vermeer), il était déjà actif en 1830 puis devint l’un des militants les plus impliqués dans la révolution de 1848. Elu député d’extrême gauche, il fit partie des chefs socialistes qui envahirent l’Assemblée nationale lors de l’insurrection du 13 juin 1849. Condamné à mort par contumace, il parvint à s’enfuir en Angleterre. La brochure fut immédiatement poursuivie en justice et Thoré condamné à un an de prison pour "attaques contre la propriété et excitation à la haine".
