‎Corpus Christianorum. The Autograph Manuscript of the Liber Floridus A Key to the Encyclopedia of Lambert of Saint-Omer‎

‎Hardback, IV+210 p., + 42 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503507927. Vol. IV of the series Autographa Medii Aevi is a study of the original manuscript of the Liber Floridus (Ghent, University Library, MS 92). This encyclopedical compilation of the early twelfth century (finished 1121) was composed, written and illustrated by an obscur canon of the Chapter of our Lady in Saint-Omer (France, dept. du Pas de Calais). It may be considered one of the earliest illustrated medieval encyclopedias and its maps, diagrams and pictures (some of them masterpieces of Romanesque art) are world-famous. Due to its apparent lack of logical structure, however, Lambert's work has often been dismissed as an unorganized compilation. Against this still prevailing opinion the present book shows that the encyclopedia is the expression of a highly personal global view of the world. It was to be a brilliant synthesis, pervaded by an emphatic sense of symbolism, allegory and eschatology. The close codicological and textual analysis of the complete work shows also why Lambert failed to achieve his object in its full splendour; how especially external circumstances have caused a gradual weakening of the original train of thought as well as of the original beauty of the manuscript. The book focuses on the fundamental links between Lambert's thoughts and the material structures he had to create to give them their place in his book. Prof. Derolez has specialized for more than thirty years into the study of the Liber Floridus. In 1968 he edited the original manuscript in a celebrated facsimile and text edition. In 1978 his doctoral thesis on Lambert's work was published. The present work is the synthesis of a life's research. For the first time the complicated genesis of the Liber Floridus is unraveled in an international language. Languages: English, Latin.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Hildegardis Bingensis Liber divinorum operum‎

‎Hardback, CXX+501 p., + 15 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503039213. This edition renders the text of the Ghent manuscript in its final corrected form. The apparatus criticus contains the variant readings of the other early manuscripts. The great novelty is the apparatus correctionum: here all corrections in the Ghent manuscript are painstakingly noted with their extent, the technique used, the identification of the corrector and whenever possible, the text of the original, deleted version. The apparatus fontium, finally, identifies all of Hildegard's sources. The extensive introduction contains original studies by Peter Dronke (who also compiled the apparatus fontium) on the place of the LDO in the work of Hildegard, its originality, meaning and structure. Albert Derolez, who established the text and who is the author of the two other apparatuses provides a detailed analysis of the manuscripts, with special focus on the Ghent codex and its genesis and explains the edition technique adopted. ‎Abbon, un abbe de l'an Mil‎

‎Paperback, 468 pages., 59 b/w ill. + 18 colour ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503524580. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Raimundus Lullus: An Introduction to his Life, Works and Thought Opera latina. Supplementum Lullianum II‎

‎Hardback, XIV+564 p., 4 b/w ill. + 9 colour ill., 4 b/w line art, 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503526102. This volume offers the first comprehensive introduction in English to the study of the philosopher and theologian Raimundus Lullus (c. 1232-1316). From the 1270s onwards Lullus worked on his Art: a philosophico-theological system which takes the basic concepts of the three monotheistic religions of its time and discusses them by means of rational discourse in order to convince Muslims (and Jews) of the truth of the Christian articles of faith. Revising his Art and extending it across all fields of human knowledge, Lullus created a universal science that strongly influenced thinkers such as Nicholas of Cusa and Leibniz. He produced some 280 works in both Catalan and Latin, the Latin Opera currently being edited in the Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis series. The present Introduction provides a key to Lullus? prolific philosophical and theological output. It is divided into three sections: Lullus' life, his works and his thought, i.e. the Ars. The first section offers a survey of Lullus' eventful life (his conversion, illumination, travels, etc.) and presents the historical context for his intellectual projects. The second section offers a full catalogue of all his works, together with a short summary of each of them, an appreciation of their importance and basic bibliographical information concerning editions and further literature. The third section gives an explanation of Lullus' Art, its mechanisms and its philosophical implications; it also shows how his thought manifested itself in the different realms of knowledge: natural, human and divine. The book is the result of a joint effort by international scholars specialising in Lullus, who have been working on this Introduction since 2003, namely, Oscar de la Cruz, Fernando Dominguez, Jordi Gaya, Robert D. Hughes, Marta M. Romano and the editors. Languages: English.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Hildegardis Bingensis Scivias I-II‎

‎Hardback, LX+325 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503034317.

‎Corpus Christianorum. Arnoldus Gheyloven Roterodamus Gnotosolitos parvus‎

‎Hardback, CLXXVII+641 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503051215. Arnold Gheyloven (c. 1375/1420) was born in Rotterdam (The Netherlands). He studied liberal arts in Vienna, and canon law in Bologna and Padua. Around 1407 he joined the regular canons of the Windesheim monastery at Groenendaal near Brussels. He composed c. 30 works, among which the Gnotosolitos parvus ('Small Know Yourself'), which text has been preserved in one single manuscript (Liege, Bibliotheque du Grand Seminaire 6 F 18). Gheyloven wrote this text for students, preparing themselves for the priesthood in a paedagogium at Louvain or with the Brethren of the Common Life in Deventer. This Summa of moral theology, canon law, and spirituality shows what these young men had to learn with regard to faith and morals, the sacraments and the works of charity. Acting as confessors, they were supposed to pass on these moral senses to their penitents, in the century before the Reformation. Languages: Latin, English.‎

‎sources hebraiques medievales Vol. II. Les commentaires exegetiques.‎

‎Hardcover. 68 p., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: French, Fine copy. Including an index. ISBN 9782503360669. The medieval Hebrew exegesis in its entirety is indisputably a major achievement in the work of the Jewish sages. The exegesis, designed firstly to elucidate the meaning of biblical terms, whose language was not always understood by members of the Jewish communities scattered throughout the Christian and Muslim world, and then to annotate them for academic and practical purposes, played an important role in enhancing understanding of the sacred texts and adapting them to the needs of schools and communities. The author defines the genre of the exegetic commentary and characterises the methods employed: he traces the stages of its development across the different socio-cultural backgrounds of medieval Judaism; he draws up specific critical criteria; he follows the spread of the genre in time and space, weighs up modern editions and shows us the contribution these commentaries make to the history of the Middle Ages. At the end of the book is a bibliography detailing the principal commentaries and tables showing how the genre is chronologically, geographically and thematically divided. The book provides a critical introduction to a category of sources which has been too long neglected by historians.<br>Dans son ensemble, l'exegese hebraique medievale est sans doute une realisation majeure de l'oeuvre des sages juifs.

‎Hardback, LII+340 p., 5 colour ill., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503533483. The Rhetoric and Hermeneutics of Illustrated Sacred Discourse‎

‎Hardback, 652 p., 124 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503524696. The present volume of essays, Emblemata Sacra. The Rhetoric and Hermeneutics of Illustrated Sacred Discourse, follows a conference that took place in January 2005 in Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, thanks to the close collaboration between the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Literature Department) and the Universite Catholique de Louvain (the research group 'Figures et formes de la spiritualite dans la litterature et les expressions artistiques'). The 38 essays have been organised in seven sections. The first section ('Historical and methodological issues') presents methodological bases for the study of emblematics and spiritual images, as well as the elements necessary for the Christian contextualisation of the corpus. The second section ('Exegesis of the Scriptures and the Creation'), complementary to the first section, is devoted to exegetical processes developed in different contexts and seeks to emphasise the correspondence between the exegesis of Sacred Scripture and the exegesis of the Creation, which are the two central symbolisms in Christianity. The third section ('The image in absentia') focuses on the most critical aspect of the encounter between the Word and the Image, in the form of a paradoxical iconoclastic image, already mentioned in the first section. The fourth section ('Rhetoric and poetics of the image') exposes the mutual exchanges between the word of the images and the images of the word. The last three sections all deal with the uses of figures in determined contexts. Thus, the fifth section ('The image performance') explores staged, incarnated, and exhibited figures, while the sixth section ('Circulation of images among different faiths') gathers studies about different confessional contexts in which spiritual images are used to support and feed the polemics, and the seventh section ('The efficient image') opens up the chronology toward the 19th century and then to our own time. ‎Manuscripts and Monastic Culture Reform and Renewal in Twelfth-Century Germany‎

‎Hardback, XIV+347 p., 21 b/w ill., 160 x 240 mm. ISBN 9782503515281. Each of the studies in this volume draws upon a manuscript, or a group of manuscripts, that shed light on the practice of monastic life during this period of reform. Many, but not all, of the papers focus on the monastery of Admont in central Austria. Admont was one of the most important spiritual, cultural, and intellectual centres in the high Middle Ages, and its magnificent library still houses an extensive collection of manuscripts - a rich resource both for the history of the monastery and for the broader history of medieval religious life. The book brings together the work of an international group of scholars whose work touches on various aspects of twelfth-century Admont, and the broader movement for reform and renewal in Germany and Austria. With the publication of Charles Homer Haskin's important work, The Renaissance of the Twelfth Century (1933), came a new way of looking at the civilization of the high Middle Ages. Scholars have since investigated many aspects of this revival: the rise of the universities, the development of canon law, the emergence (or re-emergence) of a heightened sense of human individuality, and the revival of religious fervour that has been labelled a reformation before the Reformation. Much of this scholarly work has focused on north-central Italy, France and England. Germany, however, has been little studied in this context, in part because the nature and trajectory of the reform there differed from that seen elsewhere in Europe. The essays in the book both explore connections between Germanic lands and the wider western European context, and consider the unique spiritual and intellectual climate of Germany's monasteries. ‎Medicina y Filologia.

‎Hardcover. 258 p., 165 x 240 mm, Languages: Spanish, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503538952.

‎Corpus Christianorum. Marius Victorinus Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam‎

‎Hardback, XCII+306 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503013213. Thanks to the fame and popularity he attained as a professor of rhetoric in fourth century Rome, C. Marius Victorinus (about 300 - post 362 AD) was awarded a statue in the Forum of Trajan (Jerome, Chron. a. 2370 = 353 AD). His treatises on logic and his translations of Aristotle and Porphyry are lost, but three of the numerous works he wrote before his accession to the Christian community still survive. A handbook on grammar (Ars Grammatica), a treatise on definitions (De definitionibus) are integrally preserved, along with a commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, the role of which as a school handbook was relevant in fourth-century education. This commentary, known under the title Explanationes in Ciceronis Rhetoricam, offers an interesting insight in Victorinus' rhetorical teaching and in his exegetical method, based on the analysis he will later apply to St. Paul's writings. This is closely linked to the Aristotelian logic and deeply rooted in Victorinus' philosophical education, as especially witnessed by the first book of the commentary. Here, the explanation of rhetorical topics through visual and memory cues as the schemes and enumerations often meets the discussion of philosophical notions and problems, though these could seem not immediately useful to the forensic debate. The present volume contains a new edition of Victorinus commentary on Cicero's De Inventione, which appears more than a hundred years after the text published in the volume of the Rhetores Latini Minores (K. Halm, Leipzig 1863). The editor has thoroughly examined the whole manuscript tradition of the commentary, which has come down to us through about forty medieval and humanistic manuscripts. The apparatus is based on six sources, stemming from the VIIth to XVIth century. These offer a good witness of the different branches of the transmission and bear interesting variants. The text itself has also been considered in reference to the Latin language in use in the fourth century AD: therefore, many passages have been modified that Karl Halm had previously corrected according to the usage of classical Latin. Moreover, some short interpolations have been recognized. The comparative study of the Ciceronian entries and the direct tradition of the De Inventione has also shown that the odd text of some entries, corrected by Halm, should actually be preserved, since it stems from the copy used by Marius Victorinus and cannot be labeled as a transmission mistake. The notes following the Latin text discuss the editor's textual choices. The introductory section covers both the history of the reception of the Explanationes and a detailed analysis of the medieval manuscript tradition.
