This Unitarian minister about whom little is known was an intimate of Emerson having served as best man at his wedding and friend of Thoreau and the Transcendentalists and for a time in the 1840s lived at their famed utopian community Brook Farm; one scholar describes him as "teacher thinker and friend of literary men." AQS 1p 10�" X 6 3/4" n.p. 1872 June 9. Very good. Very mild age toning and a few light spots of foxing. Handsomely penned in brown signed and dated at the close this unattributed stanza reads in full: "If once we knew his fertile gift could lend / With worthy verses I this page might fill / But since alas! no muse will me befriend / Instead of deed kindly accept the will." On heavy stock paper presumably from an autograph album. Most unusual and quite attractive. unknown
