With sixteen illustrations many of them in full colour including a frontispiece depicting Thalaba and Oneiza. All illustrations are taken from Persian and Indian manuscripts in the British Museum. The book contains stories of Thalaba and Kehama after the epic poems of Robert Southey and stories of Rustem condensed from Firdausi's Shah-Nameh or Book of the Kings. Alfred John Church 29 January 1829 27 April 1912 was an English classical scholar. While at University College in partnership with William Jackson Brodribb he translated Tacitus and edited Pliny's Letters Epistulae. Church also wrote a number of stories in English re-telling classical tales and legends for young people of which Stories of the Magicians is an example. He also wrote much Latin and English verse and in 1908 published his Memories of Men and Books. Church died in Richmond Surrey. A presentation copy with copperplate inscription to front blank Godfrey Edmund Luton Hawkbury Prize Dec. 1916. Condition: In a morocco binding with gilt edges. Condition: In the original green paper boards with a gold coloured leaf overlay. Externally very smart with just some slight bumping to the extremities and the head and tail of the spine.
