8vo., on laid paper, dedication leaf and title mildly creased without significant loss, fore-edges somewhat dusty, wanting front and rear free (blank) endpapers; contemporary full calf, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, boards and backstrip moderately worn and frayed, joints rubbed and split (but binding entirely sound), a good, clean copy in unrestored period binding. The 'New' English psalter, commonly known as 'Brady and Tate', was first published in 1696. It replaced the 'Old Version' by Sternhold and Hopkins, and included a number of new metres (among them 8,8,8 and a few 37 long metre renditions) not found in the Old Version or the Scottish Psalter.Nicolas Brady was Chaplain in Ordinary to the King; Nahum Tate (1652-1715), poet laureate, dramatist and adapter of other's plays (including several popular versions of Shakespeare).A well above average eighteenth century copy in worn but sound contemporary binding.

8vo., Twenty-Sixth Edition, some minor age-staining (mainly marginal), neat early nineteenth century inscription on front paste-down; contemporary tree calf, very neatly rebacked in calf to style, old backstrip ruled and tooled in gilt with original leather label lettered in gilt laid down, original endpapers preserved, speckled edges, a crisp firm copy in well restored period binding. Benjamin Jenks (1646-1724), clergyman and theological writer, officiated for a time as curate at Harley, vicar at Harley and Kenley, and chaplain to Francis, Viscount Newport, the patron of these livings. Little is known of him other than his several works, of which his 'Prayers and Offices of Devotion for Families' is by far the most important. First published in two volumes in 1697, the collection was an immediate success and quickly became a liturgical standard. The first Simeon edition, as here, increased the work's popularity and was many times reissued throughout the nineteenth century. Charles Simeon himself was a leading activist in the overseas missionary movement.

In-8° libricino di pp. (34) tra manoscritte e a stampa; un manuale di istruzioni per la preparazione della chiesa e degli abiti degli officianti, e per i rito da officiare in caso di funerale di un reale o di un pontefice; a pp. 2 e 3 vi è una pianta della zona d’altare e a fianco la legenda con la “spiegazione della contropianta dimostrativa della distribuzione delli luoghi per l’esequie di un re (mmss), da cui si possono tratte le indicazioni sulla sistemazione di panche e sgabelli nella zona dell’altare, seguono 9 pagine di testo “de officio...” rimontate, e l’ultima parte tutta manoscritta, contiene il “rito da osservarsi da chi fa l’orazione funebre per la morte di qualche re e c. alla presenza del Sacro Collegio”, “l’ordine con il quale si procede con li cinque vescovi al catafalco per le cinque assoluzioni”, “rito dell’assoluzione solenne con cinque assolventi”. in fine 2 cc.bb. Legatura coeva in piena pelle verde con cornice dorata ai piatti.

Trattato specifico dedicato alla Messa: se ne analizzano le origine storice, e l’etimologia, il significato liturgico e teologico; l’aspetto rituale della vestizione dei sacerdoti, della preparazione della messa, e della cerimonia vera e propria. Anche sono presenti indicazioni di ordine sociale, ad esempio nei capitoli che indicano l’abbigliamento e la “decenza” con cui le donne devono comportarsi in chiesa (ad esempo è fatto loro obbligo di stare in silenzio). Frontespizio mancante dei margini e rimontato. Qualche gora di umidità. Una molto piccola lacuna a c. 5.

Juan Lopez de Caparroso (Borja 1524 - Valladolid, 1632) fu un vescovo e teologo spagnolo: fra il 1595 e il 1608 fu vescovo in Italia, prima a Crotone e poi a Monopoli; successivamente ottenne il permesso di ritirarsi a Valladolid dove sarebbe morto all’età di 108 anni.
