Berens' account was first published (by Rivington) in 1839 and proved a very useful summary of earlier histories by Burnet, Collier, Fuller, Heylin and Strype among others. It was several times re-issued (commonly undated) by SPCK into the 1860s. Scarce in this edition and condition.‎

‎8vo., on laid paper, dedication leaf and title mildly creased without significant loss, fore-edges somewhat dusty, wanting front and rear free (blank) endpapers; contemporary full calf, back with five raised bands ruled in gilt, boards and backstrip moderately worn and frayed, joints rubbed and split (but binding entirely sound), a good, clean copy in unrestored period binding. The 'New' English psalter, commonly known as 'Brady and Tate', was first published in 1696. It replaced the 'Old Version' by Sternhold and Hopkins, and included a number of new metres (among them 8,8,8 and a few 37 long metre renditions) not found in the Old Version or the Scottish Psalter.Nicolas Brady was Chaplain in Ordinary to the King; Nahum Tate (1652-1715), poet laureate, dramatist and adapter of other's plays (including several popular versions of Shakespeare).A well above average eighteenth century copy in worn but sound contemporary binding.‎

‎8vo., Twenty-Sixth Edition, some minor age-staining (mainly marginal), neat early nineteenth century inscription on front paste-down; contemporary tree calf, very neatly rebacked in calf to style, old backstrip ruled and tooled in gilt with original leather label lettered in gilt laid down, original endpapers preserved, speckled edges, a crisp firm copy in well restored period binding. Benjamin Jenks (1646-1724), clergyman and theological writer, officiated for a time as curate at Harley, vicar at Harley and Kenley, and chaplain to Francis, Viscount Newport, the patron of these livings. Little is known of him other than his several works, of which his 'Prayers and Offices of Devotion for Families' is by far the most important. First published in two volumes in 1697, the collection was an immediate success and quickly became a liturgical standard. The first Simeon edition, as here, increased the work's popularity and was many times reissued throughout the nineteenth century. Charles Simeon himself was a leading activist in the overseas missionary movement.‎

With the half-title; leaves C9-11 clipped at upper outer corner with minimal loss of text. The work comprises 'Two Discourses' [with] (separately paginated) 'Prayers and Meditations relating to the Holy Communion' [with] (unpaginated) 'The Church Service'.
