To Which Is Added The Report From The Same Committee On The Petition Of William Forsyth Late Proprietor Of The Niagara Falls Pavilion. W.L.Mackenzie Esq. Chairman. Toronto: M.Reynolds Printer to the Hon. the House of Assembly 1835. First Edition of this famous report an eloquent and forceful indictment of the Family Compact Government largely written by Scottish-Canadian journalist and politician William Lyon Mackenzie who chaired the committee. The grievances of the Reformers are listed in detail: concern regarding the excessive power of the executive branch in Upper Canada and the campaigning of government officials for Tory politicians during elections criticism of companies like the Welland Canal Company that mismanaged funds given to them by the government and the salaries of officials who received patronage appointments. Demands are made for an elective legislative council and responsible government. A landmark document in the political history of Upper Canada. Mackenzie represented York County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada and was elected the first mayor of Toronto in 1834. He led the rebels in the Upper Canada Rebellion in 1837 and after its defeat he unsuccessfully rallied American support for an invasion of Upper Canada as part of the Patriot War against British imperialism. Interestingly this is a signed presentation copy given the year of publication by lawyer politician and later judge Archibald McLean who was a rising member of the Family Compact. As a colonel of the militia during the 1837 rebellion he was involved in routing the rebels in Toronto commanding the left flank of the loyalist forces under Colonel James Fitzgibbon in the attack on Montgomery’s Tavern. Printed item. Standing Council of the Baronetage. Shorthand Notes of Proceedings at the Sixth Annual General Assembly held Thursday 8th July 1909.
Standing Council of the Baronetage London. 1909 or 1910. Henry Good & Son London E.C. 9pp 4to. In fair condition on lightly-aged paper; with central horizontal fold. A main topic of the meeting was as Sir Lambton Loraine explained the assertion by the Duke of Norfolk of his 'right to a jurisdiction over the Baronetage in every way' and his belief that he has 'a right to keep our record at his own house in St. James's Square whereas we have not yet got the King's answer to the Home Secretary's Committee's proposal that a person appointed by the Home Office should be the future Registrar of the Roll of the Baronetage'. Another matter discussed was 'whether the title "Baronet" should be on one's card'. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington 11th Baronet who has written at top-right of the title-page: 'Read 15 June 1910'. Scarce: no other copy found either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC. [ASSEMBLY OF THE FRENCH CLERGY]
Uncut stitched as issued. Edges a trifle dusty else clean and crisp. A printing of extracts from the minutes of the Assembly of the French clergy in 1765 a meeting most notable for reiterating the episcopacy's defence of it's exemption from taxation; a statement that from a Jansenist perspective amounted to a revocation of the Declaration of 1682 which had codified the principles of Gallicanism. The tensions bolstered by this corruption of Gallicanist fundamentals together with increased opposition to monarchical absolutism would pave the road to the Revolution - an ultimately the nationalisation of all ecclesiastical property. . 8vo. [Baltimore Bank Riots] Maryland General Assembly
The Report of and Testimony Taken before the Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Delegates of Maryland. To which was Referred the Memorials of John B. Morris Reverdy Johnson and others Praying Indemnity for Losses Sustained by Reason of the Riots in Baltimore in the Month of August Eighteen Hundred and Thirty-Five
Annapolis MD: William M'Neir 1836. Wrappers. Very Good binding. Octavo. 77 3 pp. First edition. In contemporary plain wrappers. Wrappers are detached and chipped; contents are generally foxed; small and early institutional stamp in the bottom margin of one page deep in the pamphlet; minor crease throughout the pamphlet from a vertical fold; dog-eared pages.

Quite a presentable copy of a scarce publication on the Baltimore Bank Riots of 1835 which grew out of the failure of the Bank of Maryland. There was a belief that its impending bankruptcy was anticipated by its officers leading to civil unrest. The issues at trial were whether Baltimore officials had reacted appropriately and adequately when unrest began and rioting actually broke out. This pamphlet gives numerous depositions as to events in the city during this extended period of civil violence. American Imprints identifies another issue of this with slight differences to the title page that was issued the same year. Despite there being two issues it remains remarkably rare in commerce. Henkels offered it in 1915; beyond this there are no other auctions or offerings noted by the usual sources. OCLC locates barely a dozen copies of both issues together. American Imprints 38812. [Federalist Politics - Connecticut] [Webster, Noah] Connecticut General Assembly
At a General Assembly of the State of Connecticut holden at Hartford on the second Thursday of May 1808. The Following Gentlemen are chosen by the Freemen of this State to stand in Nomination for Election in October next as Representatives in the eleventh Congress of the United-States viz
Hartford: Hudson and Goodwin 1808. Letterpress broadside measuring 13 x 7 ¾ inches. Some slight toning near fine overall. Fine. A broadside announcing the candidates for the United States House of Representatives a list which includes Noah Webster. Webster received 212 votes in the preliminary election in May enough to get him a spot on the ballot but lost in the general election in a generally difficult time for Federalist politicians. Webster experienced a religious conversion during this period after being a not particularly devout Congregationalist earlier in his life and embraced the church completely perhaps due to the death of his infant son in 1806. Webster would run again for U.S. Representative in 1810 1812 and 1816 losing each time and eventually abandoned politics his last office held being in the Connecticut House of Representatives ending in 1807 shortly before his first campaign for national office. We find no record of this broadside in OCLC or other ephemera relating to Webster’s political career in Connecticut in the trade. The collected acts from this session were published in octavo format but we find no other record of this broadside printing. Hudson and Goodwin unknown
