‎Erich Mendelsohns Berliner Architekturbüro zählte Anfang der dreißiger Jahre vierzig Mitarbeiter und war eines der größten in Europa. Seine kometenhafte Karriere, die nach dem ersten Weltkrieg mit dem Einsteinturm in Potsdam begonnen hatte, wurde abrupt durch den Antisemitismus der Nationalsozialisten gestoppt. Im Frühjahr 1933 verließ Erich Mendelsohn Deutschland, um zunächst in England, dann in Palästina und später in Amerika weiterzuarbeiten. Erich Mendelsohns herausragender Stellenwert in der Geschichte der modernen deutschen Architektur ist heute unbestritten. Weniger bekannt blieben seine Arbeiten nach 1933. Die vorliegende Studie beschäftigt sich mit seinem Schaffen in Palästina (heute Israel), wo er zwischen 1934 und 1941 ein gutes Dutzend bedeutender Bauaufgaben übernahm: u.a. den Generalplan für die Hebräische Universität in Jerusalem und die Villa für Chaim Weizmann, dem späteren ersten Präsidenten Israels. Vor einem brisanten politischen Hintergrund entwickelte Erich Mendelsohn sensibel Kriterien für eine jüdische Architektur im ?Altneuland?. Er fühlte, daß eine Übertragung seines progressiven deutschen Formenvokabulars in dieses im archaischen Stadium verbliebene unberührte Land völlig unangebracht und befremdend wirken mußte: eine sinnlose Provokation gegen die arabische Welt und für den Aufbau des jüdischen Staates eine Mißachtung der eigenen Wurzeln, die er nicht im Ghetto der Diaspora, sondern in den seit zweitausend Jahren unangetasteten Lebensformen der semitisch-arabischen Welt sah. Dennoch war er einsichtig genug, weder seine eigene westliche Erziehung zu negieren noch die Lethargie der arabischen Welt als heiliges Kontinuum zu befürworten. Er forderte eine Ost-West-Synthese. Und er baute sie.‎
