Währenddessen sind in der Luther-Forschung neue Erkenntnisse gewonnen worden und neue Fragen aufgebrochen: Man wurde aufmerksam auf die Bedeutung des gesellschaftlichen Hintergrunds. Die Tiefenpsychologie bot neue Deutungsmöglichkeiten an. Die Kenntnis der Methoden und Inhalte von Scholastik und Humanismus, die Luther vermittelt wurden, hat beträchtlich zugenommen. Die Profangeschichte betonte den Anteil des politischen Faktors an Luthers Schicksal. Um den Zeitpunkt und den Inhalt der reformatorischen Entdeckung sowie um das Faktum des Thesenanschlags sind große Auseinandersetzungen geführt worden. Protestanten und Katholiken sind sich in der Beurteilung des Reformators ein gutes Stück nähergekommen. Der Verfasser hat den Ertrag der Forschung in einer neuen Lebensbeschreibung des jungen Luther ausgewertet, anhand der Quellen kritisch überprüft und zusammengefaßt. Dabei ergab sich sowohl in Einzelheiten als auch in größeren Zusammenhängen und hinsichtlich des Aufbaus ein verändertes Lutherbild. Die Beziehungen des betenden und ange- fochtenen Mönchs mit dem Theologen, sein langer Weg bis zum reformatorischen Durchbruch, die Zusammengehörigkeit von Ablaßstreit und reformatorischer Entdeckung als einer doppelten Wende, der Zusammenhang des reforma torischen Programms mit Luthers ursprünglichen Anfragen u. a. m. wurden besser verstehbar. Die reiche und darum auch nicht immer einfache Persönlichkei Luthers tritt so plastisch in Erscheinung. Die entscheidende Frühzeit Luthers ist ein großer und faszinierender Gegenstand, der in sich beschrieben werden kann.
