Volume in 8° legato in pelle, titolo al tassello al dorso a cinque nervi, decorato con incisioni floreali in oro, tagli colorati, bianca, frontespizio, lettera dedicatoria, prefazione, indici 16 cc., 694 pp., 13cc., bianca. Opera composta originariamente in spagnolo dal domenicano Luigi di Granada (1505 - 1588) mistico e teologo. Allievo di Giovanni d' Avila le opere del nostro autore incontrarono la calda approvazione di S. Carlo Borromeo e di S. Francesco di Sales che giunse a definirlo il principe degli scrittori spirituali. Il corpo principale dell'opera è preceduto da una lettera indirizzata a suor Anna Maria di Gesù religiosa presso il gran convento delle Carmelitane Scalze in Parigi. Leggere bruniture alle primissime pagine e lievi mende d'uso alla legatura. Edizione non comune si presenta in più che buono stato.

Dissertazione sulle antichità cristiane sacre, scritte e figurate in cui l''Autore in contraposizione con la Riforma descive attraverso gl'oggetti i vecchi riti, dalle chiese al tempo di Costantino il Grande alle iscrizioni dei Martiri al tempo di Diocleziano, illustrando come i Cristiani ricavassero dalle immagini le dottrine religiose. E tra una descrizione e l'altra non mancano i passi contro il "nemico" Voltaire. Al termine l'appendice sull'uso delle tre classi nella Teologia. Lievi e diffuse gore di umidità che non precludono in nessun modo la fruibilità del testo, ininfluenti spellature alla legatura, interessante e di piacevole lettura.

Opera completa in tre volumi in 8°, eleganti legature coeve in mezza pelle, titolo ai dorsi a quattro nervi, ornati da fregi impressi a secco e dorature, tagli spruzzati, sguardie, occhielli, frontespizi, prefazione, XXIV, 435, 489, 464 pp.. Reimpressione ottocentesca della grande opera apologetica di Bossuet (l'edizione originale apparve a Parigi nel 1688), in cui lo scrittore sostenne vigorosamente la tesi dell'unità della Chiesa contro i frazionamenti e la parcellizzazione causate, appunto, dalle variazioni delle confessioni protestanti. Con estesa documentazione e alti pregi di stile, Bossuet ripercorre la totalità degli scismi protestanti, dal luteranesimo al calvinismo all'anglicanesimo, tratteggiando incisivi ritratti dei massimi esponenti del cristianesimo riformato. Interessante, in bella veste legatoriale, in ottimo stato.

La seconda, usci in due volumi nel 1739 in seguito alla necessità di aggiungere delle correzioni e delle parti al testo originario. Noi presentiamo il secondo tomo di questa edizione. Con qualche traccia d'usura sui piatti, ma comunque un ottimo esemplare. Volume raro.

16mo., on laid paper, title and preliminaries very lightly age-soiled; most attractively bound in seventeenth century red full morocco, sides with triple frame border stopped at corners by rosettes all in gilt, back with five raised bands, second compartment framed and lettered in gilt, all other compartments framed in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, one corner lightly bruised, joints very lightly rubbed, short split in upper joint (but binding entirely sound), a very good, clean copy of a scarce work in wholly unrestored period binding. Scarce life of Paolo Sarpi by his disciple Fulgenzio Micanzio (1570-1654). Sarpi (1552-1623), Venetian scholar, church reformer and patriot, was the author of several works, of which the most important is his 'Istoria del Concilio Tridentio', first published in Italian (London, 1619) with an English translation by Brent in the following year and a French edition by Elzevier in 1661. It was his approach to treat ecclesiastical history in the manner of politics; 'a kind of Anglican picture of the debates and decisions' (Hay). His contempt for the Curia made him popular with Protestants; Milton refers to him as 'the great unmasker'. Prudently, Sarpi never acknowledged his authorship of the work, despite the efforts of Louis II to extract his admission. Willems, p.217, n.876.

First edition of Archbishop Benson's famous 'Lincoln Judgment', following the ecclesiastical trial of Edward King, Lord Bishop of Lincoln, charged with eight ritual offences carried out in the Diocese of Lincoln. One of the most important ecclesiastical trials relating to the Oxford Movement, the case delivered two fundamental judgements. First, a binding legal decision on certain disputed questions of ritual, and secondly that the jurisdiction of the archbishop of Canterbury alone is sufficient to try one of his suffrgan bishops. A rare survival.

The text is occasionally cropped close at top but always without loss. Lady Tower was born Sophia Cust/Brownlow on 14 April 1811, the daughter of John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow and Sophia Hume. She married Christopher Theron Tower on 10 February 1836. Complete with half-title; wanting one blank preliminary.Louis-Antoine Caraccioli (1723-1803) was a prolific writer of poetry, history, fiction and biography. Born in Paris, he served as colonel to Augustus III, King of Poland and Elector of Saxony, and so travelled widely throughout Europe. Despite close ties to both Louis XV and Louis XVI he managed to survive the Revolution, though eventually he died in penury. The broad thematic range of his works makes him interesting to scholars of manners and many other subjects. He is best known among bibliophiles for two publications printed with coloured inks: Le livre de quatre couleurs (1757) and Le livre à la mode (1759) But the full list of his works is much longer ('trop fécond' complains the ungenerous Nouvelle Biographie Générale), and many of them are of interest. The present work was first published in Paris by Nyon earlier in the same year. It remained popular throughout the eighteenth century and was translated into English as 'The Language of Reason' in 1802. This edition, the first non-French issue, is scarce.

Sm. 4to., First [and Sole?] Edition, F2 torn at fore-margin with some loss of text, some light age-staining; disbound, sewed as issued, uncut, a fresh, crisp copy. With the publisher's advertisement leaf at end. The work is dedicated by Henry Smith to Pollard himself. James Ley (1618-1665), third Earl of Marlborough and naval captain, was grandson of his namesake, the first Earl and notable barrister. By 1643 he had become a Royalist commander and two years later established a colony at Santa Cruz in the West Indies. He then commanded the East Indies squadron that received Bombay from the Portuguese in 1661, and was nominated Governor of Jamaica in 1664. Ley's 'pious letter' is dated 24 April 1665. It concludes with the phrase 'So prays old James, near the coast of Holland' [at sea during the Second Anglo-Dutch War]. A marginal note in a neat contemporary hand states (correctly) 'the ship he was in, Old James, was his own name'. He died soon after [13 June 1665] aboard the same vessel. The Battle of Lowestoft, fought on 13 June 1665 between the English fleet under James Duke of York and the United Provinces [Dutch] fleet under Jacob van Wassenaer, remains the worst naval defeat in Dutch history. The author was killed in the 68-gun 'Old James' stationed in the Centre Division of the Duke of York's Red Squadron. Smith's compilation is nothing if not wide ranging. The other 'learned and honourable persons' include (of the UK) Arundel, Bacon, Bancroft, Charles I, Compton, Coventry, Donne, Egerton, Hatton, Howard, Leicester, Mason, Peito, Pembroke, Raleigh, Selden, Thomas Smith, Somerset, Stafford, Usher, Walsingham, Wolsey, Wotton; (and others) Aristotle, Caracciolus, Charles V, Chrysostom, Gondamar, Grotius, de Haro, Heinsius, Ignatius, Irenaeus, Junius, Justin Martyr, Mazarin, Origen, Plato, Polycarp, Richlieu, Salmasius, Seneca, Socrates, Solomon, Tertullian. Significantly, the publisher's advertisement leaf announces 'An excellent Preservative against Plague…2s. 6d. Per Paper, sealed', together with 'Medela Pestilentiae…an exact Method for curing that Epidemical Distemper' and 'Reflections on the Weekly Bills of Mortality for the Cities of London and Westminster'. EXTREMELY SCARCE.

Third edition of the prose translation by Francois Mace (1640?-1721), first published in 1698 with a second edition the following year.The frontispiece is unsigned. BnF attributes the headpieces of Books I, II and possibly III to Jean Mariette (1660-1742). The work is prefaced by the unsigned dedication to the Duchess de Bourgogne [Marie-Adelaide de Savoie], contents of the four books, Approbation de Monsieur Coursier, Theologal de Paris, and Approbation de Monsieur Pillot, Docteur de Sorbonne & grand Penitencier de Tournay. The work is completed by litanies de Jesus-Christ, de Saint-Sacrement, de la Vierge, oraisons.Two of the four spirited head-pieces are captioned in Latin; p.161 is misprinted 147.Jean-Baptiste Coignard was printer to the King and to the Academie Francaise.Very scarce.
