2 vols., 8vo., First Edition; handsomely bound in late-nineteenth century full tan calf BY ANDREW GRIEVE , sides with double frame border enclosing decorative frame stopped at corners with floral sprays all in gilt, backs with five raised bands tooled in gilt, second and third compartments with red and green leather labels ruled and lettered in gilt, all other compartments elaborately tooled and blocked in gilt, gilt doublures, marbled edges, marbled endpapers, a splendid set from a notable Scotish house. The binding is signed on front free endpaper versos. Andrew Grieve of Edinburgh produced his best work in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. He was particularly noted for his panelled bindings, of which there are several fine examples in the BL. A gifted teacher-mentor, he nurtured many apprentices, among them Charles McLeish the Elder who went on to work first for Riviere and, most notably, for Doves under Cobden-Sanderson before establishing his own bindery in London in 1909.

8vo., text unpaginated, text partly in double-column, terracotta endpapers; handsomely bound in contemporary full roan, sides most elaborately framed and blocked in gilt, back with flat bands tooled in gilt, second compartment lettered in gilt, all other compartments richly tooled in gilt, gilt edges, gilt doublures, terracotta endpapers, expertly recased, a remarkably elegant, clean, crisp copy. With the engraved nineteenth century bookplate of Edmund Williams Gilbert mounted on front paste-down. The primary text is presented in a bold, large-fount type ideal for audience address. The 'Companion' is printed by Kaygill for Scatcherd & Letterman to match the edition of Prayer. The Psalter, by Brady and Tate, is also printed by Cooke & Collingwood and dated separately 1819. THIS EDITION IS NOT COMMONLY FOUND IN THIS BINDING AND CONDITION.

With the 'Moses' frontispiece and 'Cherubim' title, and complete with final advertisement leaf (often missing). 'Eyres' in imprint should read 'Eyre'. Title of 'Private Devotions' dated 1764 but with continuous pagination. Crisp copy of one of the leading Anglican devotional works of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The author [by popular consensus] was a tutor to Milton and author of several other devotional works. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. ESTC T26177 (recording the first edition of 1658).
