‎KEMPIS Thomas a‎

‎The Christian's Pattern: or, a Treatise of the Imitation of Jesus Christ. In Four Books. Written originally in Latin by Thomas a Kempis. Now render'd into English [by George Stanhope]. To which are added Meditations and Prayers for Sick Persons. [Second Edition]. REMARKABLY BRIGHT, CRISP COPY IN PERIOD CALF‎

‎12mo., Second Edition, on laid paper, with engraved frontispiece [but bound without the plates sometimes present at the head of each of the four books], neat eighteenth century signature on title, some moderate age-staining throughout; attractively bound in eighteenth century full calf, sides with double frame border in gilt enclosing floral frame border stopped at corners with decorative spray, back with five raised bands, all compartments richly framed and tooled in gilt, doublures tooled in blind, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, corners bruised, a very good, tight copy in sympathetically restored period binding. With two nineteenth century inscriptions recording circumstances of ownership on blank preliminary. The engraved frontispiece of the Crucifixion is by Van der Gucht. Stanhope's translation of Kempis's spiritual classic first appeared in the previous year. In this paraphrastic rendering the pithy style of the original is presented as flowing sentences more in tune with eighteenth century taste. The edition was continually reprinted during the next 150 years, and in 1886 Henry Morley edited it for Lubbock's 'One Hundred Books'. The first three editions are very scarce, especially in contemporary or period bindings.‎

‎BIBLE‎

‎The English Version of the Polyglot Bible containing the Old and New Testaments. [With Cruden's Concordance and Four Thousand Short Scripture Questions with Answers]. AGSTER'S TEACHER'S BIBLE: LARGE EDITION IN PUBLISHER'S ROAN PORTFOLIO‎

‎8vo., on India paper, with 9 coloured engraved maps on 6 and a double-page chronological chart; attractively bound in publisher's black roan portfolio with drop sides all round, covers framed and blocked in blind and blocked and lettered in gilt, back with five raised bands ruled in blind, second compartment lettered in gilt 'Bagster's Teacher's Bible', gilt edges, black endpapers, portfolio mildly scuffed and rubbed at extremities else a remarkably well-preserved, bright, clean copy. Bagster's Teacher's Bible is a facsimile reprint, with larger types, of the English Version of Bagster's Polyglot Bible first published in 1817 and which made Bagster's name. It corresponds page for page, and line for line, with the two well-known Pocket Editions. The text is that of the Authorized Version, printed in double column with the references in a third central column in Bagster style. In addition to the Old and New Testaments, this edition contains Cruden's Concordance, Chronology, Tables of Weights & Measures, Tabular Harmony, Comparative View of Quotations, and a set of maps engraved and coloured expressly for this edition. A particular feature is the set of Four Thousand Short Scripture Question with Answers, designed expressly for the use of teachers. The Teacher's Bible is an edition uncommon at best, and scarce indeed in this condition with wholly unrestored portfolio in unusually sound state. See Darlow & Moule 1081.‎
