‎[African-American Performance] Sutton, Isaac‎

‎Eight Unpublished Slides of John Elray Sanford aka Redd Foxx Taken for a Jet Magazine Shoot 1976‎

‎Los Angeles 1976. Eight kodachrome slides showing Foxx with one possibly related slide of a woman included as well. Unpublished originally taken for the May 6 1976 issue of Jet Magazine Vol. 50 No. 7 which is also included here. Fine condition magazine nearly fine with slightest tanning. Fine. Redd Foxx left NBC in 1976 after a successful run of six seasons of Sanford and Sun and went to ABC producing a short-lived show called The Redd Foxx Comedy Hour which was canceled after its first season due to poor ratings despite wide critical acclaim. Jet Magazine covered the transition in an article in 1976 with photographs by Isaac Sutton. Offered here are eight unused images from the shoot capturing Foxx in a range of setings including a swimming pool and on his moped riding around Los Angeles. A nice group from the height of Foxx’s career in comedy although his stint at ABC would wind up being a disappointment considering his earlier success. unknown‎

‎[African-Americana - Massachusetts] Conant, [Benjamin Howe?]; Freeman, Benjamin; Isaac Royall House‎

‎Five Photographs of the Isaac Royall House c. 1880s - 1890s‎

‎Massachusetts 1890. Albumen and Silver Gelatin Prints 9 ¾ x 8 ¾ - 8 x 6 inches on larger mounts three with credits to Conant photographer one credited to Benjamin Freeman and one uncredited. Varying wear very good condition overall. Very Good. The Isaac Royall house in Medford which still exists as a museum is most notable for the existence of one of the only separate quarters for enslaved people to exist in Massachusetts. The house was used during the revolution after Isaac Royall Jr. fled to England and had several owners before the Daughters of the American Revolution turned it into a museum in 1898. Collected here are three photographs from the opening of the museum likely taken by Benjamin Howe Conant with Conant on rectos of two and the other matching an image currently on the museum’s site. Another larger albumen print shows the main house with a woman at the door likely from the 1880s. Perhaps most interesting is the fifth image taken by Benjamin Freeman of Somerville likely in the 1880s with the inscription “View from Slave illegible Showing House in right Driveway on left.†We find no other record of this image which features a well dressed couple in the midground and has retained excellent contrast. unknown‎

‎[American Revolution] Watts, Isaac‎

‎The Psalms of David Imitated in the Language of the New Testament and Applied to the Christian State and Worship‎

‎Newburyport MA: John Mycall 1792. Hard Cover. Good binding. 12mo. 288 pp. Early printing. Originally issued with Watts's "Hymns and Spiritual Songs" not present here though the Psalms are complete. In recent cloth with tasteful printed paper label. Only light soiling to the binding; contents toned and foxed; a few leaves with some wear and chipping to the margins or corners; a solid copy with an illegible early owner name "Burlington August 1818 / University of Vermont."

Mycall's revision of Watts's psalter was first issued in 1781. In it Mycall removed all references to Great Britain and King George exchanging them with references to the nascent United States—a significant declaration in its own right and one that really captures the fervor of the revolutionary American. Ezra Stiles that monumental American theologian and president of Yale describes Mycall's edition in his diary entry for 8 December 1781 calling it "well adapted to the Church in America." Though there are several psalms that were revised by Mycall Stiles specifically points to 75th Psalm titled: "Power and government from God alone Applied to the glorious revolution in America July 4th 1776." Verse 2 reading: "America was was sic doom'd a slave / Her frame dissolv'd her fears were great; / When God a right'ous Council gave / To bear the pillars of the State." An early but post-revolution imprint of this important revolutionary psalter. Evans 23106; ESTC W4416; The Literary Diary of Ezra Stiles. New York 1901. Vol II p. 571. John Mycall unknown‎

‎Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius 1646. Modern vellum sewn on 4 supports laced through the joints with the title volume number and year of publication lettered in gold on the spine. Oblong 4to. With a richly engraved allegorical frontispiece in each volume one by J. van Meurs the other unsigned and 229 engraved maps views and plates illustrating the voyages several double-page or folding including a large folding map of the world. 21 parts in 2 volumes. First edition second issue with a newly engraved title page of the most important collection of Dutch voyages to the North around the world and to the East Indies undertaken between 1595 and 1640. Widely regarded as one of the greatest voyage collections published in any language the work assembles journals drawn from original editions autograph manuscripts supplied to the editor and first-hand narratives. Compiled by Isaac Commelin 1598-1676 a prominent Amsterdam bookbinder and scholar the collection is also celebrated for its extensive corpus of maps and plates carefully copied either from the original editions or the navigators’ own manuscript charts. The work was originally published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam under the title Oorsprongh ende Voortgangh der Nederlantsche Oost-Indische Compagnie. It first appeared in 1645 and following its immediate success was reissued in 1646. Divided into twenty-one parts each section comprises multiple travel accounts which are supplemented by official documents and editorial commentaries by Commelin under the heading "Inworp" intended to update and contextualise the reports. Twelve of the travel accounts appear here for the first time including expeditions to the East Indies by Pieter Both Jacob van Neck Steven van der Hagen Wolphert Hermansz Van Warwijck and De Weert Cornelis Matelief Paul van Caerden Wybrant Schram H. Hagenaer and the voyages to the East Indies China and the Philippines by P. Verhoeven. Particularly significant are the preliminary sections which include the full text of the Dutch East India Company's VOC founding charter of 1602 the revised charter of 1622 and other key documents relating to the establishment and governance of the company up to 1631. As such the collection is one of the most important sources for the early history of the VOC. Quarto size 212 pp. not matching pagination see below with 12 aquatints by Isaac Robert Cruikshank. A humorous collection of sketches exalting through parody the merits of the thrifty. The writing although very much a parody contains many nuggets of truths which illuminate how little the world has changed in the about 200 years since the book's publication: "Money money alone though it has been unaccountably neglected by authors strangers perhaps to its very name and still more to its practical use and management. . .is the mainspring of all human action want wish and desire." The author goes on to state that it is the desire of "the Save-all Club" to keep "the Kind and Benevolent Reader" out of the grip of poverty through thrift. The "Rules of the Club" provide amusing proof of such virtue: Rule VI "The smallest superfluous expense is not only a reproach to a member but he may be fined by the Committee for the use of the poor"; and Rule IV "As a new coat never fails to attract animadversion in the Club the members are requested to avoid that singularity as much as possible. If it prove that the coat is only turned the owner shall dine that day GRATIS".

Isaac Robert Cruikshank 1759-1856 was a popular English caricature artist and cartoonist and like his brother George is known for his pioneer work in the history of comics and comic strip cartoons. He collaborated often with George who is better known for his work with Charles Dickens.

This edition was originally issued in boards and had pp. 39-42 87-110 and 163-178 omitted as is the case in this edition and all known editions and which is explained in a footnote appearing on p. xvi: "The reader will perceive an hiatus after p. 38 another after p. 86 and a third after p. 162. Some digressions occurred in those places on subjects too abstruse to be generally interesting; they have therefore been withdrawn; but in consequence of a temporary absence of the author the suppression took place after the work was printed. As the connexion of its parts is not disturbed it is hoped that the liberty thus taken will be tolerated with indulgence." Additionally this copy has plate no. 11 bound as the frontis instead of being bound at p. 186. Each plate is marked "Designed and Etched by I. which appears as a "J" at this date in keeping with the Latin tradition R. Cruikshank" and bears the imprint "Published by Thomas Boys Ludgate Hill London Dec. 1 1819."

___DESCRIPTION: Custom bound by Bennett Book Studio NY with their binder's stamp on the verso of the front free endpaper in quarter blue morocco and marbled paper covered boards backstrip stamped in gilt top-edge gilt fore- and tail-edges uncut engraved title page with the coloured vignette of a three-pronged candlestick which is thrifty as one can burn a candle down to the base twelve aquatint plates including frontis; quarto size 10 1/8" by 6 5/8" pagination: i ii-xvi 1 2-38 43-86 111-162 179-240 pp. first edition.

___CONDITION: A near fine copy the marbled paper boards clean and unrubbed with only a few light stray marks the leather shelfback smooth with a few light spots of rubbing and the gilt bright straight corners a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and the volume is entirely free of prior owner markings; some sunning to the spine light rubbing to the corners some of the plates have toned with corresponding offsetting to the opposite text pages one leaf pp. 221-222 with the fore-edge bottom corner torn loss of about an inch only in the ample margins with no loss of text; still overall a near fine copy.

___CITATION: Tooley no 165 this copy without the final advertisement leaf which "is however usually wanting".

___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.

___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. ‎London: Printed and Sold by Daniel Isaac Eaton Printer and Bookseller to the Supreme Majesty of the People at the Cock and Swine 1795. Modern plain wrappers and stitching. 54pp. Light browning Very Good.

The publisher Daniel Eaton was a persistent challenger of British efforts to curtail speech critical of the Crown and government. He had been arrested and acquitted for publishing Paine's 'Rights of Man" and then for publishing a comparison of the King of England to a Game Cock.
This pamphlet's thesis is that "Britain is on the brink of ruin. . . Corruption and distress walking hand in hand through the country; and war eternally compleating the triumvirate of despotism. . . That government is near its end when having once depended upon the free temper of the people they endeavor to reign by their own extent of power." The author writes "on the extravagance of the present reign" and its corrupting effects. He predicts "commercial bankruptcy! a national famine! and an unavoidable Revolution!"
OCLC 221410570 4- Columbia Baylor two in England as of January 2024.
