Hollander Jacob
Two Autograph Letters Signed Baltimore Johns Hopkins University May 18 and June 2 1905 to Commander E. F. Leiper Monte Cristi Dominican Republic
<p>two letters octavo 5 pages written in ink on State Department letterhead paper lightly tanned else in very good clean and legible condition.</p><p> Hollander writes:</p><p> "… I have received your letter of the eleventh instant with the copy of the Official Gazette enclosed. I thank you very much for the trouble to which you have gone and shall welcome any further material you may obtain. President Roosevelt has asked me to supplement the preliminary reconnaissance which I made in Santo Domingo with a detailed written report. I shall begin work upon this at once and it is very likely that in connection therewith I shall revisit the Island late in the summer. </p><p> It will be important for me to remain in as close touch as possible with political and other developments in the Island. You of all persons are qualified to give this information with respect to perhaps the most serious phase. I should therefore be very glad indeed if you could write me from time to time as fully as practicable concerning the situation…"</p><p> "… thank you for the documents … viz. the budget and the list of licenses of the municipality of Monte Cristi. I hope to return to Santo Domingo later in the summer and would be very glad to hear from time to time in regard to any developments that may occur before my return …"</p><p> The Dominican Republic which shared the island of Hispaniola with Haiti was politically unstable and financially bankrupt when Theodore Roosevelt became President of the United States. Unable to pay its national debts the country faced the threat of military action by France and other European creditor powers. To prevent European intervention and thus protect the routes to the future Panama Canal then under construction Roosevelt pursuing his own version of the Monroe Doctrine and "Big Stick Diplomacy" assumed a virtual protectorate over the country guaranteeing its territorial integrity against European intervention while agreeing to help pay its European debts by taking over the Dominican Customs the Republic's main source of revenue. With the unstated threat of landing US Marines if necessary Roosevelt also sent Jacob Hollander head of the Department of Political Economy at Johns Hopkins University to the island to make sure that the country put its "financial house in order." </p><p> Hollander descended from German-Jewish immigrants and a leader of the Baltimore Jewish community had already served President McKinley Roosevelt's predecessor by negotiating a monetary agreement with the leading European powers; and by revising the tax laws of Puerto Rico. After writing these letters he was to spend the next five years in the financial reorganization of the Dominican public debt. </p> Hollander's correspondent US Naval Commander Edwards F. Leiper was serving as Executive Officer of a US Navy warship sent to the Dominican Republic "to protect American interests" when the Admiral commanding naval forces in the Caribbean of orders from Washington "peaceably" – with an accompanying Marine guard – installed Leiper as Customs Collector at Monte Cristi a little town on the northwest coast of the island on the very day that an armed mob attacked the Customs House. Despite the outrage of the local Dominican Governor the Admiral made it clear that if any "harm befell" Leiper he would not hesitate to land a full detachment of Marines. By the time Hollander arrived for his "preliminary reconnaissance" the Dominicans had become angrily accustomed to indefinite US domination books

Galaxy of Comicalities.
<p>Lansing Alfred A. Alexander Anderson Jacob Maas Milton F. Harrison <i>Galaxy of Comicalities</i> Philadelphia: Printed by Lesher & Shelly No. 303 Callowhill St. at $1.25 per annum in advance 1833. Twelve Issues: Volume 1: Nos. 1 – 12. These are twelve issues of only forty printed between October 2 1833 and July 5 1834. Issue 11 December 11 1833 contains a review of <i>Sketches and Eccentricities of Colonel David Crockett of East </i>sic<i> Tennessee</i>. Crockett 1786 – 1836 a consummate self-promoter was the subject of numerous books. <i>Life and Adventures of Colonel David Crockett of West Tennessee</i> a spurious biography not authorized by Crockett was published in 1833 and reprinted later in the same year under the more accurate title of <i>Sketches and Eccentricities of Colonel David Crockett of West Tennessee</i>. <i>Galaxy of Comicalities</i> was a racist publication characteristic of humor during the Andrew Jackson administration. Mocking people of color during their "days off" writing in racial dialect and making sexist jokes about women this short-lived publication was intended for a semi-literate reader or listener sympathetic to the publishers' racist views. The editorial standard is as execrable as the spelling and views expressed. Two fine folding engraved plates. 9 leaves; 20 pp. one leaf of "Nota." Two parts in one vol. Small 4to modern wrappers. Stuttgart: J.G. Zubrodt 1681 the date is given in an anagram. First edition of this scarce observation of the famous comet of 1680-81; according to WorldCat we find no copy in North America. Apart from its brightness this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg. Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke Flamsteed Newton and John Evelyn. Zimmermann 1642-93 mathematician astronomer millenarian and theologian studied theology at the University of Tübingen and became a Lutheran minister at Bietigheim in Baden. A follower of Jakob Böhme Zimmermann's millenarian views caused him to be removed from his ministry. He attracted like-minded dissenters and in 1693 a group of about 40 people led by Zimmermann left Hamburg for Pennsylvania. Zimmermann died en route in Rotterdam. The remainder of the group established a religious community near the Wissahickon Creek. Zimmermann in his varied life was a professor of mathematics at Heidelberg. He wrote several notable and influential books on comets and was an active observer of the 1680-81 comet noted by Kronk see below on p. 372. Newton mentioned Zimmerman in the first edition of the Principia as an observer of this comet. The first plate depicts the comet's path. The early chapters deal with the comet's movements through the heavens and this is followed by a series of careful computations as to its exact positions at different moments in its progress. Fine copy and scarce. ❧ Kronk Cometography I pp. 369-73. Poggendorff II col. 1411. unknown books

First edition in French 1st ed. in Swedish: 1820 of this very scarce and famous work in which Berzelius describes the use of the blowpipe in chemistry and mineralogy. "The scientific apparatus and reagents available in Sweden when Berzelius began his work were very inadequate. The new forms of apparatus that he built were described in the various editions of his textbook and became standard pieces of equipment in laboratories all over the world. He was especially skillful in the use of the blowpipe which had been developed in the Scandinavian countries. He utilized it in many of his analytical procedures and the book that he wrote concerning it popularized its use abroad."-D.S.B. II p. 93. The apparatus which Berzelius developed allowed him to greatly improve the accuracy of qualitative and quantitative analysis and he introduced many new methods. The translation by Fulgence Fresnel 1795-1855 is known to be excellent. Very good uncut copy. The plates depict cross-sections of the blowpipe and other chemical apparatus. ❧ Cole 137. First edition in French 1st ed. in Latin: Danzig 1734 and enlarged. This is "one of the earliest monographic treatments of the sea urchins. It includes descriptions illustrations and a classification of both recent and fossil sea urchins.Although altered and enlarged this work was a major source of information on the Echinoidermata for zoologists and paleontologists throughout the eighteenth century and remained a point of departure in discussions by such early nineteenth century authors as James Parkinson."-D.S.B. VII p. 401. II. First edition in French 1st ed. in Latin: Leipzig 1743. This work summarizes Klein's feelings about taxonomic methods. His method was based entirely on external characteristics such as the number and position of limbs and the mouth. He vigorously opposed any method including the Linnaean system based on characters not visible externally. Klein 1685-1759 a leading marine zoologist "had many and diverse interests in natural history besides sea urchins. He developed a botanical garden in Danzig founded and directed a naturalist's society there made extensive collections and published about two dozen monographs including studies of birds fishes reptiles and invertebrates other than the sea urchins particularly the mollusks."-D.S.B. The attractive frontispiece depicts Klein standing in front of his natural history cabinet. A very fine and pretty copy. unknown books

SCHONHEINTZ Jacob
Apologia Astrologie
One large woodcut diagram in the text. 24 unnumbered leaves. Small 4to modern boards. Nuremberg: G. Schenck 21 September 1502. First edition; this is the first of only two books known to have been printed by Georg Schenck and the author's only book. "In 1502 there was printed at Nürnberg a defense of astrology by Jakob Schonheintz a doctor of arts and medicine and a Franconian. He signs his preface at Würzburg. The immediate occasion of this defense was 'the impudence of a certain man who wishes himself to be considered a theologian although he is anything else than one who had attacked astrology and its professors. Pity for the unlearned who may take his attack seriously has moved Schonheintz to reply. He furthermore regards this preliminary skirmish as a preparation for a future encounter 'not with a cursed scribbler but with the most learned and most eloquent Giovanni Pico Mirandola most generous count of Concordia.' Schonheintz proceeds to say that no one has attacked astrology more bravely no one more learnedly no one with greater force and contention than Pico has."-Thorndike IV pp. 542-43. This book was much read and quoted in the early 16th century. Fine copy. ❧ Zinner 818. hardcover books

BIGELOW Jacob
AMERICAN MEDICAL BOTANY BEING A COLLECTION OF THE NATIVE MEDICINAL PL
1817. THE FIRST BOTANICAL WORK PUBLISHED IN AMERICA BIGELOW Jacob. AMERICAN MEDICAL BOTANY BEING A COLLECTION OF THE NATIVE MEDICINAL PLANTS OF THE UNITED STATES CONTAINING THEIR BOTANICAL HISTORY AND CHEMICAL ANALYSIS AND PRPOERTIES AND USES IN MEDICINE DIET AND THE ARTS WITH COLOURED ENGRAVINGS. Boston: Cummings and Hilliard 1817-1820. First edition. 60 color plates most with tissue guards: 10 hand-colored copper engravings and 50 plates printed in color a la poupee probably from an etched stone with some plates finished by hand. Six parts bound in three volumes. Octavo in fours nineteenth-century quarter calf bindings with marbled boards red morocco label and horizontal double-rules in gilt to spines. Ex library: each volume has a bookplate and ink stamp on front pastedown a perforated stamp to title-leaf with an ink stamp on verso a perforated stamp in top margin of first text leaf and an ink stamp on p. 51. Plates are unmarked. Bindings are worn and scuffed with joints tender some starting. Plates are clean for the most part though some have offset on versos from text leaves or slight toning from tissue guards. Text is clean. "This is the first botanical work published in America. Bigelow originally planned to use hand-colored copper plate engravings which are employed in the first half of the first volume. This method proving too expensive and laborious he sought a method of printing color rather than applying it by hand. Richard Wolfe who has made an exhaustive study of the work believes that the rest of the plates the book was issued in six parts over a three-year period were made by etching a stone block then applying the colors to the stone 'a la poupee'. The stone inked with multiple colors was then printed in a single impression. This is the only use of such a process an American color plate book." - Reese 19th Century American Color Plates Books #10.
