Illustrated with life-like plates. s'Gravenhage Pieter van Thol 1740. Octavo. xxii538pp. 1f. Contains approximately 36 engravings by Noach van der Meer roughly based on Adriaen Van de Venne's illustrations for the first edition of 1625. Although smaller and simplified they're finely rendered. This verse compendium of advice to young women was first published in 1625 and went into many editions until at least 1779. Jacob Cats 1577-1660 the beloved and prolific poet known as "Father Cats" was a jurist statesman and diplomat and for fifteen years Raad-Pensionaris of Holland. With small marginal tears to pp. 3984108183 and 411 small worm hole along inner margin of pp. 108-120 and small dampstain to corners of pp. 378-428 none of these flaws affecting the printed area. Two signatures slightly starting; and the folding plate of children's games torn 4" along the fold line. In early vellum lightly soiled. Light to moderate foxing. ‎Pamphlet 8vo 42 pp. Lacks half title disbound and removed minor tears where removed some overall aging and toning; otherwise very good. Jacob Cushing 1730-1809 was born in Shrewsbury Massachusetts and graduated from Harvard in 1748. He was ordained in Waltham Massachusetts and became the pastor there in 1752. During the Revolutionary War he served as scribe of the State Convention of the Clergy. Like some of his other sermons this is a somewhat scarce title however he did publish a number of sermons between 1764-1798. This is also appears to be an unusual copy as both Evans and Sabin indicate 39 pages in their listing but this copy has only 30. However the sermon winds down on page 30 and The End is clearly indicated on the bottom of the page. Unclear if there were any subsequent additional pages which would account for the difference. Speaker of South Carolina House of Representatives 1787-1794; U.S. Senator Federalist 1795-1801. One of the "midnight judges" of 1801. He died in Charleston in 1816.</p><p> Read writes from his summer home in Newport Rhode Island discussing amongst other topics the Burr-Hamilton duel and Napoleon:</p><p> "My Dear Sir</p><p> We made sail at 5 OClk on Friday from New York & proceeded a few miles thro Hell Gate passage when the wind died away& we barely drifted with the ebb tide during the night. … We hove about once in the morning got within the light house … and the very Dangerous reef of rocks called Brewster's reef… We finally let go our anchor & brought up in 16 faths water a most disagreeable high sea was brewing & we tumbled about for four hours in as dark & uncomfortable a situation as you can well conceive ….</p><p> We heard by the arrival of Cahoone yesterday afternoon of the mortal wound given to poor Genl. Hamilton by Col. Burr. This event has occasioned a great sensation here. ‎<p>Pamphlet 8vo original printed wrappers with woodcut portrait 48 pp. Some soiling and staining to wrappers and preliminaries and last few pages spine and edgewear a few minor chips normal aging to contents; otherwise good to about very good. According to McDade "the Reverend Jacob S. Harden poisoned his wife with arsenic after a fortuneteller had told him that she would not live long." A New York Times article at the time indicated she was dead five months after the marriage. However McDade reports that the mother-in-law was to blame for the crime since she hounded him to marry he reluctantly married her daughter.
