After the fall of the "impregnable" fortress of Vlissingen to British troops in 1809 emperor Napoleon ordered Carnot to write a treatise on how fortifications could be improved for better defence. Carnot was a staunch follower of the controversial ideas of the Marquis de Montalembert 1714-1800 who criticized the traditional system of bastions and instead proposed longer walls which could be equipped with many more guns protected by casemates. Carnot was a strong believer in the use of mortar fire "vertical fire" and often used the terms "rain" and "storm" to denote the abundance of munitions that would come down on the attacker.
