"7 FOOTPRINTS TO SATAN was released as both a silent film and as a sound film with Vitaphone musical score sound effects and some dialogue sequences. The film received generally negative reviews including from such publications as THE NEW YORK TIMES VARIETY -- which called it 'An utterly moronic sound film . all hokum' -- and the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER in which Mildred Martin wrote 'after all the screams and creaks and thumps it reaches a somewhat tame conclusion .' Despite this it performed well at the box office. A companion Photoplay edition of the Merritt novel published by Grosset & Dunlap and featuring several stills from the film also sold extremely well. The sound version of the film is presumed lost . and the Vitaphone soundtrack for recording is also lost." - Wikipedia. A 2014 restored copy of the silent version is available on YouTube. Chapters 1-7 are by Merritt while Bok wrote chapters 8-27 following Merritt's death. The book is the first edition priority B Currey with the book title on one line on the front board. A date of 1947 is indicated on the title page while a 1948 date is indicated on the copyright page. There is NO cancel copyright sticker on the copyright page as is sometimes present. It is stated as Number 325 of 1000 First Edition copies. The book in black boards with gold lettering to the front has minor bumps to corners and spine extremities and is at least VG. The mylar-protected dust jacket is price-clipped states the publisher as F.F.F. Publishers on the spine and back panel and contains an advertisement on the back panel for a book The Skylark of Space published by F.F.F. in 1950. Thus it appears unsold copies of The Black Wheel were re-released in 1950 with a new and different dust jacket which doesn't mention Bok who wrote most of the book at all. The jacket artist is not credited. The now mylar-protected jacket has some edge creasing has small pieces missing a back panel stain and several tears repaired quite well on the jacket back by brown paper tape. It looks quite presentable and is only fair due to the missing pieces and tear repairs. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Fair. Illus. by Hannes Bok interior illustrations. The book and its contents are in clean bright condition. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The text pages are clean and bright. The dust jacket is noticeably toned and has large chips especially to the spine. "Merritt's writings were heavily influenced by H. Rider Haggard Robert W. Chambers Helena Blavatsky and Gertrude Barrows Bennett writing as Francis Stevens with Merritt having "emulated Bennett's earlier style and themes." Merritt's stories typically revolve around conventional pulp magazine themes: lost civilizations hideous monsters etc. His heroes are gallant Irishmen or Scandinavians his villains treacherous Germans or Russians and his heroines often virginal mysterious and scantily clad. What sets Merritt apart from the typical pulp author however is his lush florid prose style and his exhaustive at times exhausting penchant for adjective-laden detail.
