‎Polonsky Abraham screenwriter‎

‎MONSIGNOR" SCREENPLAY BY.‎

‎Np: Twentieth Century-Fox 1981. 1132 leaves. Quarto. Mechanically reproduced typescript printed on rectos only. Bradbound in printed studio wrappers. Slight sunning to wrappers title lettered on spine but very good or better. An unspecified draft of Abraham Polonsky's adaptation to the screen of Jack-Alain Léger's novel. However a number of drafts preceded and many subsequent revised drafts followed and the script for the 1982 film release directed by Frank Perry was credited on screen to Wendell Mayes who wrote at least one early draft in February 1979. In spite of that drafts as late as October 1981 bore only Polonsky's name. This was the last film with which Polonsky was associated as screenwriter though to what degree it was a collaborative effort is unclear. As screenwriter for BODY AND SOUL 1947 and writer/director of FORCE OF EVIL 1948 Polonsky was well on his way toward a distinguished career in film when he was blacklisted and fired by Fox for refusing to cooperate with HUAC. He continued to work during the Blacklist either uncredited or pseudonymously and in 1996 the Writers Guild restored his real name and credits. Twentieth Century-Fox unknown books‎

‎MONSIGNOR" SCREENPLAY BY . BASED ON THE NOVEL BY JACK-ALAIN LEGER‎

‎Los Angeles: Frank Yablans Presentations in Association with Twentieth Century-Fox 1979. 1156 leaves. Quarto. Mechanically reproduced typescript printed on rectos only. Bradbound in printed production company/studio wrappers. Near fine. A quite early "third" draft of Mayes's adaptation to the screen of Jack-Alain Léger's novel. The script for the 1982 film release directed by Frank Perry was credited on screen to Mayes. In spite of that many many subsequent drafts bear Abraham Polonsky's name exclusively. This draft differs markedly from the several Polonsky drafts that we have examined the earliest dating from October of 1979. Small ink stroke on upper wrapper but very good or better. A "revised" draft of Abraham Polonsky's adaptation to the screen of Jack-Alain Léger's novel. A number of drafts preceded and the script for the 1982 film release directed by Frank Perry was credited on screen to Wendell Mayes who wrote at least one early draft in February 1979. Denoted a "Final Draft" of Abraham Polonsky's adaptation to the screen of Jack-Alain Léger's novel. ‎Tucker Abraham: Search Edward pseud‎

‎FREEWILL FOREKNOWLEDGE AND FATE. A FRAGMENT‎

‎London: Printed for R. and J. Dodsley 1763. xxxi1 errata268pp. Octavo. Modern half calf and marbled boards raised bands gilt label. Old divinity school stamp on title minor foxing but a very good copy very neatly bound. First edition. The pseudonymously published prelude to Tucker's magnum opus THE LIGHT OF NATURE PURSUED. This "1763 fragment was strongly criticized in the MONTHLY REVIEW to which Tucker provided a humorous reply MAN IN QUEST OF HIMSELF under the new pseudonym Cuthbert Comment. In 1768 again using the pseudonym Edward Search he published the first four volumes of his book; the last three volumes were posthumously published under the editorship of his daughter Judith in 1778 . Although an occasionally eccentric and digressive text THE LIGHT OF NATURE PURSUED enjoyed a high reputation from its first appearance. In the introduction to his MORAL AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY 1785 William Paley emphasized his deep indebtedness to Tucker in expounding his ethical theory. Paley considered Tucker to be a very original thinker. His work was also highly praised by Sir James MacIntosh who had used his ideas in his lectures on ethics ." - DNB. Tucker's writings were also read and admired by among others Coleridge Godwin and Hazlett and the latter undertook an abridgement of the full work published in 1807. ESTC locates ten copies in North America and OCLC adds a few more but this work is uncommon in the trade. ESTC T117455. NCBEL II: 1893. Printed for R. and J. Dodsley hardcover books‎

‎2 p.l. viii 236 pp. 8vo attractive antique calf double gilt fillet round sides flat spine gilt uncut. Paris: veuve Tilliard et Fils 1805. The rare sale catalogue of the library rich in oriental books and manuscripts of Anquetil-Duperron 1731-1805 French orientalist and brother of the historian Pierre Anquetil. Abraham Hyacinthe had a fascinating early life: while unsuccessfully studying for the priesthood in Paris and Utrecht he developed a passion for Hebrew Arabic Persian and other languages of the East. He travelled to India as a private soldier in 1754 in order to search for the works of Zoroaster. Granted free passage he learned modern Persian in Pondicherry and Sanskrit at Chandernagore. When war broke out between France and England Anquetil-Duperron travelled widely throughout India on foot learning further languages and studying the antiquities and sacred laws of the Hindus. He returned to Europe in an English vessel ultimately arriving in Paris in 1762 with 180 oriental manuscripts. He devoted many of the following years to scholarship editing and publishing many important oriental texts. The French Revolution seems to have greatly affected him: during that period he abandoned society and lived in voluntary poverty on a few pence a day. A fine copy. 1600 lots and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. From the library of Jean Viardot. ❧ Gustave Brunet Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique col. 408-"Ce catalogue est curieux surtout pour les livres en langues étrangeres." ‎Lincoln's 1861 State of the Union Message‎

‎<p><b>ABRAHAM LINCOLN.</b>Book. <i>Message of the President of the United States to the Two Houses of Congress. Volume 1</i> Washington: Government Printing Office 1861. 839 pp. 5¾ x 8¾ in. </p><b>Excerpt</b><p><i>"A disloyal portion of the American people have during the whole year been engaged in an attempt to divide and destroy the Union. A nation which endures factious domestic division is exposed to disrespect abroad and one party if not both is sure sooner or later to invoke foreign intervention. </i></p><p><i> Nations thus tempted to interfere are not always able to resist the counsels of seeming expediency and ungenerous ambition although measures adopted under such influences seldom fail to be unfortunate and injurious to those adopting them. </i></p><p><i> The disloyal citizens of the United States who have offered the ruin of our country in return for the aid and comfort which they have invoked abroad have received less patronage and encouragement than they probably expected.</i></p><p><i> It continues to develop that the insurrection is largely if not exclusively a war upon the first principle of popular government--the rights of the people. Conclusive evidence of this is found in the most grave and maturely considered public documents as well as in the general tone of the insurgents. In those documents we find the abridgment of the existing right of suffrage and the denial to the people of all right to participate in the selection of public officers except the legislative boldly advocated with labored arguments to prove that large control of the people in government is the source of all political evil. Monarchy itself is sometimes hinted at as a possible refuge from the power of the people. </i></p><p><i> In my present position I could scarcely be justified were I to omit raising a warning voice against this approach of returning despotism."</i></p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>President Lincoln's first message to Congress in 1861 immediately follows the title page. In the first year of both his presidency and the Civil War Lincoln criticizes disloyal citizens who are trying to ruin the country. He acknowledges that the Confederates firing on Fort Sumter ended hope of a peaceful solution and expresses his confidence in General McClellan. Lincoln also expounds on the foreign affairs the relationship of labor to capital and reports on domestic commerce and other affairs. The remainder of the book is over 400 pages of papers relating to foreign affairs and correspondence with other nations and diplomats. The second half of the book is made up of the Reports of the Secretaries of the Interior War Navy and Postmaster General.</p><p><b>Condition </b></p><p>Good. Original cloth boards with U.S. seal and titled spine some slight chipping and wear to boards and spine binding a little loose and front endpaper almost detached hinges a bit weak but still firm some aging but generally clean internally.</p> hardcover books‎

‎ABRAHAM LINCOLN‎

‎The 1858 Debates that Propelled Lincoln to National Attention‎

‎Columbus OH 1860. Hardcover. Fine. Book. Political Debates Between Hon. Abraham Lincoln and Hon. Stephen A. Douglas in the Celebrated Campaign of 1858 in Illinois. Columbus Ohio: Follett Foster and Co. 1860. 3rd edition with publisher's advertisements bound in. 268 pp. 6 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. Historical BackgroundLincoln's debates with incumbent Illinois Senator Stephen Douglas earned him national prominence. Slavery was the pressing national issue especially regarding its expansion into the western territories. Douglas authored the Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854 which effectively repealed the free-slave dividing line set by the Missouri Compromise 1820 at 36° 30' north latitude. Instead of banning slavery north of the line and banning south of it new states would instead decide on slavery's status within their borders by ""popular sovereignty."" On its surface Douglas's bill appeared to offer the nation a middle path on the contentious issue of slavery. Instead it would only muddy the waters on slavery. The Kansas-Nebraska Act was only one of a long list of compromises in the middle decades of the nineteenth century. Despite these attempts the slavery debate only became more heated throughout the 1850s. Northerners seeing the hypocrisy of ""states rights"" advocates chafed when a new Fugitive Slave Act 1850 required the use of federal marshals to return escaped slaves. An unintended consequence of Douglas's bill resulted in fraudulent elections and violence in Kansas in 1855 and 1856. South Carolina Representative Preston Brooks bludgeoned Massachusetts anti-slavery Senator Charles Sumner on the Senate floor after an 1856 speech. In 1857 the Supreme Court handed down the Dred Scott decision which decreed that African Americans could not be citizens and based on one's right to bring property across state lines effectively erased the division between free and slave states. Slavery unspoken but protected in the Constitution and mitigated by antebellum compromisers was a tinderbox about to roar to fire.Lincoln recognized the problems slavery presented for the nation and in his debates with Douglas focused his attention on the nationalization of slavery both West and North. After he was nominated as the Republican candidate for the Senate he spoke to the convention famously asserting that ""a house divided against itself cannot stand."" The House Divided speech delivered at Springfield Illinois on June 17 1858 is the opening piece of this book. Though he would lose the Senate race the rest of the book details Lincoln's intellectual combat with Douglas over slavery. This book is a third edition identified by the line over publisher's imprint on the back of the title page the numeral ""2"" at bottom of page 13 and publisher's advertisements bound in at head.Harrison Yerkes 1841-1899 enlisted as soon as the Civil War erupted but since he was under 21 years of age in 1861 his father removed him from service. As soon as he reached the age of majority he enlisted in the 31st Michigan Infantry Company and remained in the Army for the remained of the war. He returned to Michigan purchased two tracts of land which he farmed until retiring in 1891. He was a lifelong Republican though never held office.ConditionLight green boards faded blind stamped gilt lettering on spine ""Harrison Yerkes Northville Mich 1860"" erased from free front endpaper same present minus date on verso of ffep bep and back paste down. ‎FLOUCAUD DE FOURCROY Abraham Leon‎

‎Manuscript entitled "Conférences sur le Cannonage faites à bord de l'Uranie" with numerous hand-drawn illustrations of cannons guns ammunition and instruments in the margins as well as many tables in the text‎

‎157 leaves of text paginated 1-124 & 129-317 nothing seems lacking. Large 4to 318 x 215 mm cont. sheep-backed black cloth extremities slightly worn title in gilt on spine. S.l.: c. 1852. A finely written and illustrated manuscript with highly technical observations on French naval artillery training and testing in the mid-19th century which are complemented by numerous hand-drawn marginal diagrams and many tables. The present manuscript was composed by Floucaud de Fourcroy 1831-1929 a descendant of the famous chemist Antoine de Fourcroy as a cadet aboard the Uranie a former frigate converted into a training ship in 1851. By the end of his career Floucaud de Fourcroy was a highly decorated admiral and commander in the Legion of Honor. The present manuscript recapitulates the curriculum of naval artillery in the middle of the 19th century. It begins with a survey of weapons classifications artillery rifles swords pikes axes etc. and the situations in which to use them different types of ammunition and their purposes and the history of their development. There are then lengthy explanations of each weapon's size range reloading time effectiveness etc. Each of these is presented with precise measurements and dimensions. The author recounts the multitude of exercises which a cadet had to undergo and master in order to progress as a naval officer pp. 265-90. There are also extensive notes on his lessons in ballistics often accompanied by intricate diagrams and mathematical formulas. Pages 295-96 feature a section entitled in trans.: "Notes on the Practical Instruction which a Sailor-Gunner must Receive." The drawings in the margins many very complex illustrate the composition of ships weapons ammunition and instruments the trajectory of cannons and firearms the construction of equipment the optimal angles of attack the adjustments necessary to maintain accuracy while the ship is in motion etc. etc. On page 317 Floucaud de Fourcroy has drawn detailed cross-sections of five types of cannons. The tables concern the range of various cannons their effectiveness at specific ranges in terms of speed and their penetration the supply needs of cannons the number of cannons that can fit on a ship etc. A most interesting manuscript in fine condition that captures the state of French naval training and warfare in the middle of the 19th century. Pages 227-28 258-64 and 315-16 are blank. hardcover books‎

‎General Orders No. 1: Thirteenth Amendment. War Department Adjutant General's Office. Washington January 8 1866.‎

‎8vo one sheet printed on both sides. Even toning and aging small closed tear to the upper margin; otherwise very good. This is a rather scarce government document that informs the military that the "Thirteenth Amendment" has passed and slavery is officially abolished. Article XIII states "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude except as a punishment for a crime whereby the party shall have been duly convicted shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction." This document is signed in type by William H. Seward 1801-1872 as the Secretary of State. Congress would follow with a Civil Rights Act of 1866 to give African Americans the same rights as all citizens but this small printed document presenting the essence of the "Thirteenth Amendment" is an important piece of history. ‎Emancipation Proclamation: New York Tribune… Tuesday September 23 1862. Vol. XVIII‎

‎Newspaper folio unbound 8pp. Dampstained browned at edges with some foxing early owner's ink stamp on top margin some small tears and chips along edges and a little creasing. Still in decent shape overall. This is one of the earliest printings of the Emancipation Proclamation which was issued on September 22 1862. The Emancipation Proclamation declared freedom for all slaves in any Confederate state that didn't return to the Union by January 1 1863. Although this executive order did not actually free a large number of slaves it set the stage for the freedom of all slaves. Coverage of the Emancipation in this newspaper begins in the middle of the first page. This newspaper article represents important coverage of a very significant event in American History. archives government exhibits emancipation website books‎

Fayram et al. 1725. First edition. Employing the mortality statistics gathered by Edmund Halley in the 1690s de Moivre formulated the theory of annuities. "De Moivre's contribution to annuities lies not in his evaluation of the demographic facts then known but in his derivation of formulas for annuities based on a postulated law of mortality and constant rates of interest on money. Here one finds the treatment of joint annuities on several lives the inheritance of annuities problems about the fair division of the costs of a tontine and other contracts in which both age and interest on capital are relevant. Ths mathematics became a standard part of all subsequent commercial applications in England."-D.S.B. IX p. 454. Very good copy. &#10087; Garrison-Morton 1690. This work by Werner who is known as the father of historical geology describes his "theory of the origin of ore deposits which would be consistent with his general theory of the origin of the earth's crust. Many of its elements were of lasting value. Werner formulated basic questions about the origin and history of veins and their contents established criteria for determining the relative age of veins and vein materials and presented a comparative study of the structure of veins and rock masses.Perhaps the most important contribution of Von den Entstehung der Gänge however was that it made the study of vein formation an integral part of historical geology."D.S.B. This is the second morning edition with the 3 a.m. update from Edward Stanton the Secretary of War which indicates Lincoln was still alive but in very bad shape. The article describes John Wilkes Booth "the actor" as the alleged assassin of the president. It describes how Booth entered Lincoln's box and after shooting him stating "Sic semper tyranis" before he leaped on to the stage. This report gives considerable detail about the how Washington reacted to the news and the scene at Lincoln's deathbed. There is also a good deal of coverage of the assassination attempt on Secretary of State William Seward. This paper represents an important piece of American history. books‎
