FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF GRETE HERMANN'S PIONEERING PAPER ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAUSALITY & QUANTUM PHYSICS. Hermann brought many Kantian ideas to her examination of the philosophical foundations of quantum mechanics. "Truly a pioneer in developing a philosophical interpretation of quantum physics" Hermann's work is considered rigorous original and far ahead of its time Crull Grete Hermann: Between Physics and Philosophy 59. An important paper on animal instinct by Bierens de Haan is also included. "In 1934 quantum physics had been a physical theory worthy of the name for only a few years. Since the Solvay Congress of 1927 the term 'quantum mechanics' had referred to something fairly definite and stable: a formalism which was a synthesis of Heisenberg's matrix mechanics Schr�dinger's wave mechanics and Dirac's theory of transformations - together with a more unified interpretation of this formalism proposed by Bohr and Heisenberg and later called the 'Copenhagen interpretation'. Hermann was to adopt numerous ingredients of this interpretation in her own account: the complementarity of wave and particle representations and of the conjugate variables of position and velocity; the idea that the results obtained have validity only in relation to a particular experimental arrangement; etc. ibid. As 'quantum mechanics' evolved and particularly in the early 193os Hermann began to intuit an incompatibility between transcendental philosophy and 20th c. physics. Her response was this essay; its conclusions and the arguments supporting them are complex and subtle drawing as much from physics as from philosophy and history. 1 Writing in this paper Hermann characterized her problems with causality and quantum physics in the following manner: "Kant listed the conditions of possibility of knowledge and thus in particular the conditions of possibility of any future physics. 2 These conditions include the category of causality which seems to imply that the predictions of any proper according to Kant science must be strictly deterministic in the following sense: there must be a univocal one-to-one connection between cause and effect between initial and final conditions; one and the same cause can produce only one single well-defined effect. 3 Now the predictions of quantum mechanics are statistical: one and the same initial state can be followed by several different final states and scientists know in advance before any actual experiment only the probability of each possible result. 4 Should we therefore conclude that the Kantian category of causality is refuted by the new physics That strict causality is not after all a necessary condition of any physics" ibid 57-58. Hermann took care in her essay to address the questions of both philosophers and physicists. Briefly summarized she concluded the following: "1 Quantum physics does not refute the category of causality and 2 There are no hidden variables; quantum physics is complete and its predictions will remain statistical" ibid 58. Note that Hermann first published some of this treatise also in 1935 in Abhandlungen der Fries'schen Schule; this publication in a far more widely-read journal contains only her Kantian ideas. Other arguments against von Neumann were not included here. Abraham 1644-1709 was a famous Augustinian preacher and author of numerous popular and satirical works. His descriptions of trades and professions are often witty. He advises the bookseller to do his job well in order not to become a bookkeeper instead of a bookselller. He chides some of the bookbinders for sewing poorly and cropping the leaves. The charming illustrations show the craftsman professional artist or intellectual in the middle of his pursuit with much technical details and often attractive background views. 'What Michelson and Morley did. was undermine a longstanding belief in something called the luminiferous ether; a stable invisible weightless frictionless. medium that was thought to permeate the universe. Conceived by Descartes embraced by Newton and venerated by nearly everyone ever since the ether held a position of absolute centrality in nineteenth-century physics as a way of explaining how light traveled across the emptiness of space Bryson 117. Prevailing theories held that ether formed an absolute reference with respect to which the rest of the universe was stationary and that ether was a medium for the propagation of light as water waves must have a medium to move across: water. Given the speed of light designing an experiment to detect the presence of ether and its drift or hypothetical motion relative to earth was challenging. To do so Michelson designed an interferometer -- essentially a massive stone block with mirrors and crisscrossing light beams -- capable of measuring the velocity of light with great precision. The device enabled Michelson and Morley to measure the speed of light in different directions enabling them in theory to measure the speed or drift of the ether relative to Earth thus establishing its existence. Michelson and Morley expected to see their light beams shifted by the swift motion of the earth in space thus giving measure to different speeds of light in each direction but "none was observed showing that the earth's motion did not affect the light's speed" Dibner 161. "The failure of this experiment was a serious blow to classical scientific theories because it cast doubts on the existence of the universal ether which had been a basic principle of for example the Newtonian theories of the universe" PMM 401. The result discredited the ether theories "and opened the door to "new standards of reference of time and space from geometry and cosmometry" ultimately leading to Einstein's 1905 proposal that the speed of light is a universal constant" Dibner; Lightman 130. The history of science records the 1887 ether-drift experiment of Albert Michelson and Edward Morley as the turning point at which the energetic "ether of space" was discarded by mainstream physics thereafter replaced with the postulate of "empty space." Abraham Bosse who was born in Tours in 1602 is best known as an engraver but he was also the first professor of perspective at the newly founded Acad�mie Royale from 1648 to 1661 when he was forced to leave due to disagreements with other Acad�micians. The two addresses that follow the book explain why in Bosse's own opinion he had been forced to leave his lob at the Acad�mie and they also respond to comments made about Bosse by F�libien in the preface to the first part of the latter's Entretiens published a year earlier. c.f. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis make a predetermined number of measurements then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald the resulting 'sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" Gass An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research 65. In these papers Wald known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory" first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he put forth revolutionized the art of statistical testing and were later developed in the hands of computer scientists into a field known as on-line algorithms Blom Problems and Snapshots 203. "Probability theory came of age with the advent of Kolmogorov's axiomatics in 1933 and the subsequent developments in limit theorems and stochastic processes. Statistical inference came of age with the advent of the Neyman-Pearson theory in 1933 and the subsequent formalization of hypothesis testing estimation and decision theory. In these papers Wald elegantly unified two seemingly dissimilar areas: probability theory and statistical inference. To probabilists he offered gems of new results in random walks martingales stochastic processes and limit theorems. He also pointed out indirectly how one might seek probability questions from statistical inference the use the latter area as a testing ground for their abstract theorems. To statisticians Wald showed that statistical inference is not just the analysis or 'significance' of an existing body of data; it also entails their entry into the very process of experimentation and continual analysis of the data as they come available. The sequential probability ratio test embodies this aspect. Wald also showed them how results from 'pure' mathematics particularly probability theory can be adapted to put statistical inference in general on stronger footing without losing sight of its practical nature." Kotz & Johnson: Breakthroughs in Statistics. Wald's work was conceived in 1943 at Columbia. He was asked by the Navy's Bureau of Ordnance if there was a sampling plan that could terminate a statistical experiment earlier than planned. Wald's theoretical results first appeared in September 1943 but in the form of a 'restricted' report meaning that the Defense Department considered the results significantly important for the war effort and therefore decided not to disseminate them to the general public for a while. The report was 'declassified' in early 1945 thereby allowing the present paper to appear in June of that year. Interestingly enough Wald had already in his paper 'On Cumulative Sums of Random Variables' from 1944 and also offered here published many of the mathematical foundations of sequential procedures without any mention of the word sequential or any reference to his 1943 report as was called for in the protocol.
