Copyright 1831 this edition with design for schools and is considered to be the first edition that was designed for schools though Webster's first dictionary was originally published in 1828. Original leather boards and spine. The front board is loose but still attached at the bottom - mostly by the binding thread. A section of label is missing on the spine. Front end page has original owner's name with an 1831 date and "Hagerstown Academy" Maryland written. Moderate to heavy foxing noted throughout. Rear page and pastedown both have pencil scribbling. Rear end page missing. Original owner's name also penned on rear board W. Chew. The 1831 publication was listed to contain 532 pages plus two end pages so it appears that alll that is missing is just the rear blank end page.
