Stamp of Sophia Eyres on first free endpaper her name in ink on the second freeendpaper and her signature and date 1774 to the rear endpaper. § Eighteenth edition vol. 1 of 2 vols. This copy signed by the revolutionary war officer Horatio Gates. That Gates should have acquired this edition published in 1767 is of some biographical interest as it was around this time that he was renewing his commitment to a Christian life after an eventful youth spent fighting in the Seven Years’ War. “By 1762 he had become a master of military administration and an accomplished leader of men in battle. These skills however did him little good once the war ended. Living in England with no chance of promotion he sought surcease for a time in liquor and gambling but he mastered these vices in the late 1760s and drifted toward republicanism and Methodism†ANB. The pious reflections contained in clergyman James Hervey’s 1714-1758 first and most popular work “Meditations among the Tombs†and “Reflections on a Flower Garden†were clearly not successful in winning over Gates to the contemplative life and he is now best remembered for his later career as an American colonist and general during the Revolutionary War in which he controversially took credit for the victory in the Battles of Saratoga and was blamed for the defeat at the Battle of Camden. A later owner of this book was Alexander Chambers a general during the American Civil War. The stamp and signature of Sophia Eyres dated 1774 are also intriguing but efforts to identify her have been so far unsuccessful. ESTC T27780. Printed for John and Francis Rivington unknown

Later quarter olive cloth over paper-covered boards with red leather spine label. xvii 1 150; x 158 pp. Light rubbing and wear to exterior with some loss to the spine label. A few small inkstains to fore-edges. Previous owner's name in pencil to front pastedown. Light to moderate foxing throughout with some occasional pencil marks in the margins. Page 1 in the first volume has a three-inch piece of the fore-margin missing trimmed right at the very edges of the text while page 3 has a small hole and tear at the fore-margin although again no text is lost. "While in Devonshire he planned and probably began his ‘Meditations among the Tombs.’ An excursion to Kilkhampton from Bideford is said to have been the occasion of his laying the scene of the ‘Meditations’ among the tombs of that place.Hervey's writings were for a long time exceedingly popular. His first work was entitled ‘Meditations and Contemplations.’ The first volume containing ‘Meditations among the Tombs’ ‘Reflections on a Flower Garden’ and ‘A Descant upon Creation’ was published in February 1745-6 and the second containing ‘Contemplations on the Night’ ‘Contemplations on the Starry Heavens’ and a ‘Winter Piece’ appeared in 1747. These volumes are filled with truisms expressed in the most inflated language but were admired by educated persons and even superseded to a great extent such a powerful work as Law's ‘Serious Call.’ The explanation may in part be found in Hervey's sympathy with the principles of the evangelical revival and partly in a true appreciation of the beauties of nature very rare in his time.
