Later quarter olive cloth over paper-covered boards with red leather spine label. xvii 1 150; x 158 pp. Light rubbing and wear to exterior with some loss to the spine label. A few small inkstains to fore-edges. Previous owner's name in pencil to front pastedown. Light to moderate foxing throughout with some occasional pencil marks in the margins. Page 1 in the first volume has a three-inch piece of the fore-margin missing trimmed right at the very edges of the text while page 3 has a small hole and tear at the fore-margin although again no text is lost. One page in the second volume has a small piece missing from the margin. Very good no jacket with faults as noted. Printed by Henry Ranlet for John West, Bookseller, Boston hardcover

"While in Devonshire he planned and probably began his ‘Meditations among the Tombs.’ An excursion to Kilkhampton from Bideford is said to have been the occasion of his laying the scene of the ‘Meditations’ among the tombs of that place.Hervey's writings were for a long time exceedingly popular. His first work was entitled ‘Meditations and Contemplations.’ The first volume containing ‘Meditations among the Tombs’ ‘Reflections on a Flower Garden’ and ‘A Descant upon Creation’ was published in February 1745-6 and the second containing ‘Contemplations on the Night’ ‘Contemplations on the Starry Heavens’ and a ‘Winter Piece’ appeared in 1747. These volumes are filled with truisms expressed in the most inflated language but were admired by educated persons and even superseded to a great extent such a powerful work as Law's ‘Serious Call.’ The explanation may in part be found in Hervey's sympathy with the principles of the evangelical revival and partly in a true appreciation of the beauties of nature very rare in his time. Hervey had a lasting impact on art through William Blake who was an admirer of his. Blake painted Epitome of James Hervey's Meditations among the Tombs between 1820 and 1825. Hervey is also mentioned in Blake's work as one of the holy guards to the 'four-fold gate' and his influence on Blake's poem The Tyger has also been noted. In addition to this the sombre and sweeping tone of his Meditations Among The Tombs for example 'the dreadful pleasure inspired by gazing at fallen monuments and mouldering tombs' has led to his being placed amongst the 18th Century 'Graveyard School' of poets rendering his work an important influence on Horace Walpole's 'The Castle of Otranto' of 1764 and consequently the entire genre of Gothic Literature and the later Romanticism which the genre fueled. .
