Closed tear on titlepage neatly repaired on verso. Minor soiling and foxing. About very good. In a brown half morocco and cloth folder. First and only London edition after the Philadelphia edition of the same year. A work of great importance in the history of civil liberty freedom of religion and objection to war in the United States. The document was written by a group of Quakers led by merchant Israel Pemberton. "During the first Continental Congress the Massachusetts delegation were invited by the Friends to attend a meeting at Carpenter's Hall. Pemberton addressed them urging them to grant liberty of conscience to the Friends and Baptists in their province. This incident is said to be one of the chief reasons for John Adams' animosity toward the Quakers. Holding to his religious convictions Pemberton was opposed to the Revolution. With others of his faith he refused to take the oath of allegiance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania or to promise not to give aid to the enemy. Consequently he was arrested early in September 1777 and imprisoned in the Free Mason's Lodge without trial. Their homes were searched and their papers seized.Pemberton's health was undermined during his imprisonment causing his death one year later" - DAB. This pamphlet was written by Pemberton and other Quakers immediately after their imprisonment and put through the press of Robert Bell by friends. It sets forth their views and defends their conduct. ‎Paris: Nicolas Langlois and N. de Poilly 1670. c1680. Oblong quarto 250 by 375mm 137 plates original full English red morocco lavishly gilt. A lavishly bound composite album or 'recueils factices' of views of seventeenth century Paris Versailles and the surrounding country estates. The work begins with the gates of the city moving onto its gardens palaces and public buildings; these include the Royal Palace Les Invalides the Tuileries Gardens the Observatory and the Sorbonne. There then follows 38 plates of the Palace of Versailles. The work concludes with the views of other country estates surrounding the capital; such as Chateau de Chantilly Chateau de Fontainblaeu and the no longer extant Chateau Neuf de Saint-Germain-en-Laye Chateau de Saint-Cloud Chateau de Richelieu and the Chateau de Chilly-Mazarin. The vast majority of the plates with in the work are by the engraver Adam Perelle 1640-1695. Perelle was the son of Gabriel and younger brother of Nicolas all of whom were artist. He was named 'graveur de roi' to Louis XIV and gave lessons to the French nobility; among his pupils was the Duc de Bourbon grandson of the le Grand Conde. Of the 137 plates 112 bear his imprint with 11 bearing the imprints of the publishers Nicolas Langlois or Nicolas de Poilly alone; 14 plates are before letters with manuscript titles. Four of the plates bear the name of Israel Silvestre as artist. Silvestre 1621-1691 was the a leading draftsman etcher and print dealer who specialised in topographical views.
