br. L'immagine del missionario ha spesso oscillato tra gli opposti stereotipi di avamposto della presenza europea e di difensore delle popoLazioni locali dinanzi alle forme più efferate della violenza coloniale. Sgombrando il campo da vuote generalizzazioni, il volume ricostruisce la vicenda della missione cattolica dei trinitari in Somalia, con l'intento di gettare luce sulle complesse relazioni tra colonialismo italiano, espansione missionaria e islam, dall'età giolittiana all'avvento del fascismo. Se è indubbio che tra missionari e autorità coloniali si realizzò, sul piano della propaganda, una saldatura in nome della lotta contro la "barbarie", per l'affermazione della "civiltà" e della patria, nei primi anni questo incontro non fu privo di resistenze, riconducibili a un anticlericalismo ancora vivo in alcuni ambienti coloniali. Con l'affievolirsi delle spinte tese a difendere il carattere laico dell'occupazione italiana, si registra un'apertura con il tendenziale proposito di utilizzare l'opera dei missionari per compensare le carenze dello Stato occupante nei settori dell'assistenza e dell'istruzione. Più che di una differente politica religiosa, che restò viceversa sempre orientata in senso filoislamico, le aperture nei riguardi dei missionari furono dunque il riflesso di difficoltà finanziarie e amministrative.

Si tratta della 'lacuna' segnata dall'anello autentico confuso tra copie fatte forgiare da un buon padre - così nella versione di Boccaccio - per non mortificare nessuno dei tre figli, ugualmente amati, il cui esito è l'indistinguibilità del gioiello originale, il dubbio su chi lo possegga e sul luogo in cui rinvenirlo. È il 'vuoto' che, sospendendo la pretesa di un'origine esclusiva, ricorda alle religioni la vanità di ogni chiusura e intolleranza.

"The main objective of this book is to explore the Turkish state's attempt to regulate Islam through an analysis of the regulation of Friday sermons in Turkey. Drawing on the records of disciplinary measures implemented by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (PRA) and in-depth interviews conducted with imams in Turkey, the thesis argues that the Republic developed strategies to realize a state centralization of religion. This is corroborated by the high compliance rate of imams with the content of the sermons prepared by the PRA in the absence of serious inspection mechanisms until relatively recently. The complians of imams to the sermons delivered by the state implies that a distinct (nation-)statist disposition has been approved by the imams themselves as well, and hence that he republic has managed to create the 'republican' imams.".
