Two contemporary signatures on titlepage. Light tanning and scattered foxing. A very good copy. The first book of music printed from type in America. "This is the First Edition in English of the Prayer-Book of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York. It is a translation of the old Holland liturgy. The translation of the book from the Dutch was made by the Rev. John Livingston D.D. The Psalms were rendered into English verse by Francis Hopkinson one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. There are one hundred fifty Psalms in metre accompanied on every page by the printed music. The type for the music notes was ordered from Daniel Cromelin of Amsterdam in 1764. The Ten Commandments are also versified and supplied with music. These are followed by the Songs of Zacharias the Virgin Mary and Simeon. 4to., 398ff, title enclosed by narrow decorative frame border with fine woodcut arms of Sixtus V (to whom the work is dedicated), large woodcut of King David within ornate decorative border on fourth leaf verso, several woodcut initials and head- and tail-pieces, some extremely light (virtually negligible) spotting on fore-margins (rather heavier on a few leaves), some light marginal damp-staining on two leaves of general index; modern full vellum, backstrip lettered by hand in brown, new endpapers, original free endpapers preserved, lettered in MS on bottom edge in an early calligraphic hand, a remarkably bright, crisp copy with broad margins. This copy was formerly in the notable library of Viscount Bangor. With 15pp general index and index of verses. The final printed leaf gives errata (recto) and registration (verso). Collation: +4 A-ZAA-ZZAAa-Ca8DDd2. An extraordinarily long commentary on ten verses of the first penitential psalm (Psalm 6) by an apparently obscure Bolognese monk. RARE. Not in BMC, Adams or NUC.

Some examples in this size are in 12s and 6s. We have found none that are recorded as being fully in 6s. 176 mm. Original worn purple leather binding. Gilt decorated leather spine detached, but present. Rear board detached. Corners worn with loss. Early manuscript ownership of Harriett Lucas Pickney and F. R. Hugar on title page of the Book of Common Prayer. Manuscript notes on verso of title page record of General Thomas Pickney's family captured from his family Bible by F. R. Hugar, information covers the General's marriage 1779 and through various births and deaths until 1848. Other (Huger) Pickney manuscript notes from the 1920's recto of the Preface. Double column throughout. Marbled endpapers. Slight margin loss on in sig A of Book of Common Prayer. Mild damp stain last few signatures of The Whole Book of Psalms. Hardbound. In 1789 the American Episcopal church adopted its first version of the Book of Common Prayer, which was used from 1790 until a major revision was completed in 1892. During this time, several editions of the Book of Common Prayer were published with corrections and other minor changes, of which this 1793 edition was the first. No priority has been established for the several 1793 Gaine varieties and variants. Because of format differences with those found in the record, we think that this is an unrecorded variant (closely allied to: Evans/Shipton & Mooney 26043; Griffiths 1793:11). Ce recueil clandestin des Psaumes de David, publié anonymement, est considéré comme la seule édition du Psautier de Genève imprimée en France dans la période comprise entre la révocation de l'édit de Nantes en 1685 et l'édit de tolérance en 1787. Le négociant protestant Pierre Dangirard (1725-1781], figure de la communauté calviniste de La Rochelle, passe pour en être l'éditeur. La longue préface rappelle l'histoire de la version des psaumes, de Clément Marot à Valentin Conrart, achevée par M. de la Bastide. L'affaire Calas (1763) est évoquée dans la note de la page XL et commence en ces termes : "En qualité d'homme, de françois, de citoyen, de chrétien, autant que comme protestant, j'ai toujours souhaité ardemment que l'esprit de tolérance succédât en France à l'esprit de rigueur qui a dicté tant de lois pénales contre nous; & j'ai espéré ce changement heureux, même dans les circonstances qui ont le plus affligé mon âme"...Reliure en bon état et bon intérieur. très bon exemplaire. Ce recueil clandestin des Psaumes de David, publié anonymement, est considéré comme la seule édition du Psautier de Genève imprimée en France dans la période comprise entre la révocation de l'édit de Nantes en 1685 et l'édit de tolérance en 1787. Le négociant protestant Pierre Dangirard (1725-1781], figure de la communauté calviniste de La Rochelle, passe pour en être l'éditeur. La longue préface rappelle l'histoire de la version des psaumes, de Clément Marot à Valentin Conrart, achevée par M. de la Bastide. L'affaire Calas (1763) est évoquée dans la note de la page XL et commence en ces termes : "En qualité d'homme, de françois, de citoyen, de chrétien, autant que comme protestant, j'ai toujours souhaité ardemment que l'esprit de tolérance succédât en France à l'esprit de rigueur qui a dicté tant de lois pénales contre nous; & j'ai espéré ce changement heureux, même dans les circonstances qui ont le plus affligé mon âme"...Reliure en bon état et bon intérieur. très bon exemplaire. Contemporary smooth black morocco gilt extra a.e.g. Early female ownership signature on endsheet verso corner clipped from front binder's blank; binding worn and lower board detached light foxing else internally a good copy. From the library of Herbert Boyce Satcher with his booklabel and with the bookplate of the Satcher Bequest on the rear pastedown. One of Wilde's later editions in a - formerly - rather nice and characteristic contemporary binding. ESTC locates four copies of this edition. Herbert Boyce Satcher vicar of St. Aidan's parish Cheltenham PA 1924-1958 and authority on church music built an estimable collection of books on subjects both sacred and secular among the latter an extensive collection of the works of the Uranian poets and their fellow travellers.
