I due saggi del LYELL occupano complessivamente 120 pagine dei due fasc. (il primo da p. 161 a p. 175, il secondo da p. 176 a p. 229 del fasc. 11 e da p. 332 a p. 381 del fasc. 12). LYELL (Kinnordy 1797 - Londra 1875), scozzese, geologo, amico di Darwin; attivo anche in Italia. Nel suo capolavoro "Principles of Geology" (qui riportato in ital. come apparve anticipato in Quarterly Review, n. 56 ott. 1830, ma poi uscito in 2 voll. nello stesso anno) sviluppò nella sua versione definitiva la teoria dell'uniformitarismo, concepita inizialmente da James Hutton, ponendo le basi della moderna geologia. I due spessi fascicoli in-8° (cm. 22,8x14,2), brossure editoriale ornate (mende e ai dorsifessura al fasc. di dic., gualciture ai piatti, ma immacolati gli interni ancora intonsi, sono completi delle loro 160 + 180 pagine e contengono inoltre: 1) Charles BABBAGE, Sulla decadenza delle scienze in Inghilterra (65 pagine, completo in 2 puntate). BABBAGE, (1791-1871), matematico, scienziato proto-informatico che per primo ebbe l'idea di un calcolatore programmabile, creò una macchina differenziael e ideò una macchina analitica. 2) Giacomo BOSSI, Il secondo viaggio nell'interno dell'AFRICA del cap. CLAPPERTON, 26 pp. 3) James MILL, Analisi dei Fenomeni della MENTE UMANA (44 pagine). MILL (1773-1836) scozzese, padre di John Stuart Mill; positivista, basa la psiche sull'associazione delle sensazioni; nel 1829 pubblicò in ben 2 voll. il trattatto, qui in sunto dalla Westminster Review del 1830. 3) Giulio CORDERO di S. Lyon turned out to be the sole survivor on this mission and he wrote this book when he returned. He was interested in Arab culture and learned fluent Arabic so that he could communicate with and learn more about the desert people. Lyon did discover that the Niger ran into a what is now Lake Chad and he provided information on many other remote places in North Africa.
