Läsuren. - Die Ausstellung "Afrikanische Kunst" beginnt mit Kamerun, und zwar den farbigen Gegenständen aus Duala: Rudern, Schiffsschnäbeln und Masken. ... Afrikanische Kunst ist hier ... eine Kunst, die fast ausschließlich plastisch ist, deren Material fast ausschließlich Holz ist und die etwas absolut anderes ist als die Felsbilderkunst Nord-, Ost- und Südafrikas. Diese Kunst ist primär religiös, auf den Ahnenkult ausgerichtet. Die Statuen sind die Darstellungen verstorbener Ahnen und die Masken im Grunde nichts anderes. Am deutlichsten herausgearbeitet ist die Darstellung Verstorbener in den Kongo-Plastiken: schwermütige, ernste, manchmal geradezu bittere Gesichter, und auch die Mädchenmasken haben denselben Ausdruck. Diese Kunst ist von Stamm zu Stamm verschieden, aber ohne weiteres in zwei Gruppen einzuteilen: eine einfache, sogenannte Pfahl-plastik und eine "hohe" Plastik. Die Masken können ebenso dieser Unterteilung unterworfen werden. Die Zentren der hohen Plastik gruppieren sich einmal um Nigeria als Zentrum nach Westen bis zur Elfenbeinküste, nach Osten bis ins Grasland von Kamerun und dann um die ehemaligen Staaten am unteren Kongo bis zum Ostkongo hin. Die heutige Kunst dieser Gegenden ist meist ein matter und manchmal schon ins Groteske weggesunkener Abglanz der Vergangenheit. Afrikanische Kunst könnte Widerspiegelung der Auffassung der vorderasiatischen Hochkulturen sein, verbunden mit deformierten Resten eigener Vorstellung. Man muß annehmen, daß diese Hochkulturen ca. 4000 Jahre nach allen Seiten ausstrahlten, nach Indien, China, Indonesien, ebenso wie nach Afrika und Europa. Die komplizierten und verzweigten Schnitzereien, sagen wir, Neuirlands und der Kameruner Küste bei Duala können aus ähnlichen Voraussetzungen entstanden sein: ein Motivschatz und ein stilistisches Konzept aus Vorderasien wurden im Laufe der Zeit zu einer ein wenig abstrusen Volkskunst degradiert. Man muß mit langen Zeiträumen, etwa 4000 Jahren, für diesen Entwicklungs- oder besser Degenerationsprozeß rechnen. Gerade im östlichen Nigeria am Cross Fluß und im Nigerdelta sowie im westlichen Kamerun finden sich stilistische Besonderheiten, die einzigartig und nicht einzuordnen sind; degenerierte Reste einstiger hoher höfischer Kunst: die ornamentierten Messinggefäße der Calabarküste, die Plastik der Ibibio, Ibo und Oron, die farbige Kunst von Duala sind vielleicht letzte Reste einer orientalischen Tradition. Ein vorderasiatisches Relikt könnten auch die berühmten Kameruner Schiffsschnäbel - lebhaft bemalte, durchbrochene Schnitzereien -sein. An einem Kameruner Schiffsschnabel des Staatlichen Museums für Völkerkunde in München ist das heraldische Motiv - das Motiv der Trinität also: eine Figur in der Mitte, zwei flankierende zu beiden Seiten - zu sehen: ein Mann, zu seinen Seiten je eine Schlange. Dieses heraldische Motiv findet sich auch oft noch deutlich auf den Benin-Platten aus dem 15. bis 17. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert, ist aber entstanden in Vorderasien. Hier kommt es zuerst auf den babylonischen Siegelzylindern vor: der Lebensbaum, flankiert von zwei Tieren oder Menschen, oder der Gott, von zwei Tieren flankiert. Amüsant ist zu beobachten, daß das heraldische Motiv auf dem zweiten Schiffsschnabel weiter aufgelöst ist. Die Stellung der beiden flankierenden Figuren ist nicht mehr verstanden. Hier steht ein Jäger zwischen zwei Elefanten, aber der eine kommt auf ihn zu, der andere entfernt sich von ihm. Das Ganze ist in grellen Farben bemalt und mit außerordentlichem handwerklichen Geschick geschnitzt ? (Vorwort A. Lommel)‎

The ancestors as harmonizers are also capable of giving power to spirits who can, in turn, cleanse the village or tribe from illness, personal misfortune, witchcraft, social tension and a myriad of other problems. The Baule gba gba and kplekple masks (plate 41) are excellent illustrations of this process, as are the Ekpo society masks (plate 55) and figures (plate 56) of the Ibibio people. The ancestors may also function to ward off evil powers, especially those from witchcraft. This practice can be clearly seen among the Kota and Fang people of Gabon whose ancestral reliquaries (plates 60 & 61) are used to drive off malevolent supernatural forces. During a lifetime, the ancestors invest every act, every word, and every thought with their energy. At birth, a child will often be named after a venerated ancestor so that he will acquire extra strength. During initiation rituals the ancestors are present in many forms, helping to prepare the initiate for complete integration within the group. At such times, masks which represent various aspects of ancestral power and wisdom appear in order to instruct initiates. Literally hundreds of masks are used to convey tribal traditions to initiates among the complex secret initiation societies such as the Poro and Sande of Liberia and adjacent areas of Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Ivory Coast (plates 38 & 39). Masks from these areas also function to maintain the traditional social system that was established long ago by the ancestors. Vitally important in life, ancestral intervention becomes especially crucial at death for that is when the deceased moves towards the realm of the ancestors.
