Volume in 8° grande (cm. 22,5 x 16), legatura coeva in mezza tela, titolo inciso in oro al dorso, brossura conservata all'interno, sguardie, occhiello, tavola d'antiporta con ritratto fotografico dell'autore, frontespizio, prefazione, 318 pp., colophon, 68 tavole fotografiche f.t. e centinaia di illustrazioni n.t.. Prima edizione di questo libro - documento sulla seconda, sanguinosa, guerra anglo - boera. Viene descritto il conflitto militare combattuto tra l'11 ottobre 1899 e il 31 maggio 1902 dall'Impero britannico contro le due repubbliche boere indipendenti, la Repubblica del Transvaal e lo Stato Libero d'Orange. La guerra, originata soprattutto dalle mire imperialistiche ed economiche britanniche (collegate alla corsa all' oro e alla scoperta di importanti giacimenti di diamanti nel sud africa), si trasformò in una lotta logorante caratterizzata dalla guerriglia dei commando boeri e terminò dopo estenuanti trattative nel 1902 con l'annessione ufficiale delle repubbliche boere che tuttavia mantennero la loro identità nazionale. Davvero imponente la messe iconografica, con le centinaia di suggestive fotografie sullo sfondo sudafricano che documentano l'appena terminato conflitto (libro stampato il 7 di giugno 1902). Importante e rara prima edizione. in ottimo stato.

Nel cartiglio posto nell’angolo inferiore destro si trova la dedica: AL CL.MO S.OR FRANCESCO MORESINI Havendo fatto ridur sotto la presente forma le quatro parte del mondo con molta diligentia, ho voluto anco aggiunger loro questo altro ornamento, ch’è di dedicarle al nome honoratissimo di V.M. Cl.ma la quale come intendendiss.a d’ogni arte nobile acquistera alle mie fatiche qualche splendore .V. M. dunque accettandole benignamente nella sua protettione gradirà insieme nel picciolo dono la mia buona volontà di servirla, et honorarla et con talfine le basio le mani. Di V. M. C.ma affect.mo ser. Donato Rascicottj. Sotto al cartiglio troviamo la firma dell’incisore: Iovan Batista Mazza fece. Orientazione fornita da una rosa di trentadue venti, nella quale sono indicati i punti cardinali, i quattro venti principali e quattro mezzi venti, il nord è in alto. Nella tavola sono presenti alcune didascalie che forniscono notizie storico-geografiche. Opera priva di scala grafica. Orientazione di grado in grado, da 37° 30’ sud a 37° 30’ nord di latitudine e da 315° ovest a 128° est di longitudine. Graduazione all’equatore da 350° ovest a 90° est. Carta dell’Africa incisa da Giovani Battista Mazza per l’editore Donato Rascicotti. Appartiene ad un gruppo di quattro carte dei continenti tutte firmate dall’incisore per lo stesso editore. La carta è una copia della mappa pubblicata da Abraham Ortelius nel Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570), a sua volta basata sul modello di Giacomo Gastaldi. Dedicata al patrizio veneziano Francesco Morosini, l’opera è nota in pochi esemplari, tutti identici. Tuttavia, un secondo stato della lastra viene congetturato dagli studiosi, in base al fatto che è noto un secondo stato della carta dell’America, appartenente alla stessa serie, nel quale non compare la firma dell’incisore. Sebbene questa AFRICA comunemente venga datata, come le altre carte dei continenti del Rascicotti-Mazza, intorno al 1590, la dedica al Morosini permetterebbe di circoscrivere la realizzazione della lastra intorno al 1585, sicuramente prima della nomina da parte di Sisto V a vescovo di Brescia (23 settembre 1585), dove si insediò solo dal 10 giugno 1590. Nella dedica, infatti, è appellato semplicemente Clarissimo Signor. Giovanni Battista Mazza fu incisore e stampatore attivo a Venezia negli ultimi anni del ‘500. Dal segno elegante e preciso, incide diverse carte, messe poi in commercio da Donato Rasciotti, ed anche un grande planisfero di Giuseppe Rosaccio, del 1597, nel quale si firma Giovan Battista Mazza venetiano Maestro delle stampe della Zecha de Venetia. Donato Rascicotti fu editore, commerciante e tipografo. Di origine bresciana ma attivo a Venezia, e forse anche a Bologna e Roma. A volte viene indicato come Rasciotti e Rosigotti. Secondo alcuni sarebbe da identificarsi con Donato Resegato “stampatore di disegni”, arrestato a Roma nel 1577 con l’accusa di aver rubato disegni dalla bottega del Lafreri. A Venezia la sua bottega era al Ponte dei Barettieri. Esemplare nel primo stato di due descritto in Bifolco-Ronca. Acquaforte e bulino, impressa su carta vergata coeva, con margini, in perfetto stato di conservazione. Rarissima. Orientation provided by a rose of thirty-two winds, in which are indicated the cardinal points, the four main winds and four half winds, the north is at the top. Orientation from degree to degree, from 37° 30' south to 37° 30' north latitude and from 315° west to 128° east longitude. Graduation at the equator from 350° west to 90° east. Map of Africa engraved by Giovani Battista Mazza for the publisher Donato Rascicotti. It belongs to a group of four maps of the continents all signed by the engraver for the same publisher. The map is a copy of the work published by Abraham Ortelius in Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570), which in turn was based on the model by Giacomo Gastaldi. In the dedication, in fact, he is simply called Clarissimo Signor. Giovanni Battista Mazza was an engraver and printer active in Venice in the last years of the 1500s. With his elegant and precise mark, he engraved several maps, later marketed by Donato Rasciotti, and also a large planisphere by Giuseppe Rosaccio, dated 1597, in which he signed Giovan Battista Mazza venetiano Maestro delle stampe della Zecha de Venetia. Donato Rascicotti was a publisher, merchant and printer. Of Brescian origin but active in Venice, and perhaps also in Bologna and Rome. Sometimes is indicated as Rasciotti and Rosigotti. According to some, he should be identified with Donato Resegato "printer of drawings", arrested in Rome in 1577 on the charge of having stolen drawings from the workshop of Lafreri. In Venice his workshop was at Ponte dei Barettieri. Example in the first state of two described in Bifolco-Ronca. The lithograph was created by Edmund Walker 1813 or 1814-1882 of Day & Son after James Rattray's drawing. James Rattray 1818-1854 was a lieutenant in the British Bengal Army during the first Anglo-Afghan War 1839-1842. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery Inhabitants & Costumes of Afghaunistan 1847-48. This is plate no. 2 a portrait of Dost Mohammed who had been deposed as Emir of Afghanistan. In January 1841 when Rattray was granted an audience with him in Peshawar Dost Mohammed was a prisoner on his way to exile in Calcutta. Rattray wrote that since Dost Mohammed had been "a ruler just and merciful and attentive to affairs of state" the people of Peshawur thought that he had been unjustly treated by the British. The sketches he produced were published in 30 plates in Scenery Inhabitants & Costumes of Afghaunistan 1847-48. This is plate no. 14 showing two falconers from Kohistan Khudadard and Guldin with their hawks. The ambassador represented Mir Wali prince of the frontier town of Kulum near Kunduz. In September 1840 the British were negotiating with Wali to transfer his allegiance to Shah Shuja. The Romans governed this part of Africa for six hundred cities, twelve thousand miles of roads and hundreds of aquaducts, some fifty miles long. The remains of many of these structures can be seen today. At the height of its prosperity, during the second and third centuries AD, the area was the granary of Rome, and produced more olive oil than Italy itself. The broadening horizons of the Roman Empire provided scope for the particular talents of a number of Africa's sons: the writers Terence and Apuleius; the first African Roman Emperor Septimius Severus, famous Christian theologians like Tertulllian and Saint Augustine - these are just some who rose to meet the challenges of their age.
