Pubblicazione celebrativa per i cinquant'anni di una delle maggori compagnie colonali di sfruttamento delle risorse minerarie africane (rame, cui si aggiunsero uranio, cobalto, zinco , stagno); nata da un'azienda di proprietà del sovrano del Belgio Leopoldo II, l'UMHK era gestita dalla Société Générale de Belgique ed esercitò controllo di fatto dell'economia e politica della regione congolese. Questa monografia illustra giacimenti, stabilimenti e trasporti dell'azienda, e offre uno sguardo sui servizi sociali per i dipendenti; poco dopo la pubblicazione iniziò il turbolento periodo di decolonizzazione che vide la multinazionale belga appoggiare Moise Tshombe fino alla nazionalizzazione dopo il colpo di stato di Mobutu.
