White civil engineer Roy Warner Gausmann 1882-1951 & W.C. Perkins w/ ownership markings on endpapers limitation copy numbers on pastedowns. First editions Nos. 47 & 27 of the limited copies produced by J.G. White Engineering Corp. of this groundbreaking report which reflected Ethiopia’s efforts at the beginning of the 20th century to build a dam at the Blue Nile’s outlet from Lake Tsana and which dominated British-Ethiopian relations in the decades leading up to World War II. In addition it reflected the United States’ rising interests in Africa at the time and decidedly contributed to the Italian imperialist takeover of Ethiopia and exile of the Emperor in late 1935. The initial study included here with text volume photo illustrations diagrams and large maps reported on the costs of building the proposed dam as well as a highway from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar on Lake Tsana including expedition to Mitraha Island and Gondar the proposed routes as well as the impact on the Churches and other infrastructure along the Lake. This report established that the dam could be built without exposing the island monasteries and churches to inundation and that although the dam could be used for hydroelectric power there was relatively little demand for the electricity with the potential Ethiopian Egyptian and Sudanese economies leaving little economic benefit. The follow-up and expanded report in 1935 proposed a lowered cost for the construction of the reservoir and perhaps greater returns. These reports include extensive descriptions of the historic water flows on the lake extent of wetlands groundwater and hydrology reports along with the detailed geological reports of potential highway building sites and locations as well as the potential disruption both from dam building and road building. The British and Italian governments had agreed in 1906 that they would both share in a dam building project on the Blue Nile and in the succeeding decades the project received fierce and staunch opposition by conservative elements in the Ethiopian ruling class believing that increased water volume in the lake would lead to the flooding of the monasteries and churches in which bodies of the medieval Ethiopian emperors were preserved and other Christian relics damaged as well as internal opposition within the weak oligarchic structure ruling Ethiopia. By 1925 the British Government and Mussolini had agreed that the British would support Italy in obtaining rights to build a railroad from Eritrea to Italian Somaliland while the British would gain the dam concession. The Ethiopians countered by hiring the American J.G. White engineering Cop. to lay the groundwork for the dam and the project. Italy invaded and took over Ethiopia in October 1935 while quietly promising the British government that they would continue to support their dam building concession and supporting the original 1906 Treaty. Italy was later defeated in 1941 by British and South African troops during the opening years of World War II. Similar problems have emerged in present day with the Renaissance Dam project nearing completion and concerns raised by both Egypt & Sudan that the flow of the Nile rivers downstream will be severely curtailed by the massive reservoir to build on the Blue Nile behind the Ethiopian dam which Ethiopia anticipates will allow it to become a net exporter of electrical power to the surrounding countries. Following World War II J.G. White Engineering was contracted once again to prepare a report released in 1947 and according to manuscript notes on the map vol. for the 1935 Report Gausmann took these to Ethiopia for that preparation. Worldcat locates no complete sets of the 1931 & 1935 reports Worldcat locates 3 different copies w/ varying numbers of surviving maps for the 1935 report -- Oxford BYU & Padua; none for the 1931 report; 3 locates for the 1947 report issued in Cairo & New York w/ only 8 maps; See: Teferi Mekonnen The Blue Nile Issue: A History of Hydropolitics 1884-1974 2004; James McCann Ethiopia Britain and Negotiations for the Lake Tana Dam 1922-1935 International Journal of African Historical Studies Vol. 14 No. 4 1981 pp. 667-699; Irina Grcheva Water Urbanism in Transboundary Regions: The Nile Basin and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam 2016. EVLIYA ÇELEBI [MEHMED ZILLÎ B. DERVIS], (1611-1685).
[EVLIYA IN EGYPT, SUDAN AND ETHIOPIA] Evliya Çelebi seyahatnamesi. Vol. 10: Misir, Sudan, Habes, (1672-1680).
Very Good Turkish Original grey cloth bdg. Roy. 8vo. (25 x 17 cm). In Turkish. [xxviii], [4], [4], 1112 p., 2 full-page color maps. First map is the most famous one showing the Nile and the second one shows the Mediterranean shores and cities of Egypt. Rare first edition of the 10th, and the last volume of the Evliya's travel corpus including his descriptions of Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia in the late 17th century. This legendary travel account was published between 1896-1938 respectively in ten volumes. "Book X lands him in Egypt and takes him up the Nile to the Sudan and Ethiopia. When Evliya reaches Ibrim on the Nile, the southernmost limit of the Ottoman Empire, he remarks on the intense heat of the place; contrasting it with the intense cold he experienced at the northernmost limit, Azov; and with the mild climates at the eastern and western frontiers, Baghdad on the one hand, and Istolnibelgrad on the other. Apparently, Egypt suited him best, and he found Cairo a worthy counterpart to Istanbul; for he settled there to work up his memoirs of forty-one years of travel. He died around 1683, and there is controversy over whether a certain cryptic passage refers to the Ottoman defeat at Vienna.". (Evliya Çelebi's book of travels. 2. Evliya Çelebi in Bitlis). Evliya Çelebi visited Suakin during one of his journeys across Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti and Tanzania. He describes this territory under the title "The characteristics of old throne center Suakin" as "we stayed in this city for 12 days, trading with all kinds of people with camel trains. I sold 40 dromedaries in return for 500 piasters and also disburdened, sold 50 tusks for 500 piasters. Then we started to wander around the city. The Suez Sea is to the north of the island, and it takes 12 hours to reach Mecca from the island. Therefore, the direction of Mecca from this city is to the north. Suakin is a little island stretching three miles from east to west. (Afyoncu, Daily Sabah). Further travels in the 1670s took him to western and southwestern Anatolia and Syria. He completed the Hajj again and appears to have settled in Egypt for several years. He traveled in Upper Egypt, Sudan, and Ethiopia searching for the sources of the River Nile, before settling down to compile his great travel book. OCLC 630428224 (with four copies).
