Le Coq was a Prussian / German brewery owner and wine merchant, who at the age of 40 began to study archaeology. Aided by his wealth, von Le Coq became a famous archaeologist and explorer of Central Asia. Von Le Coq was convinced that the influence of Ancient Greece could be found as far in the east as China. However, organising expeditions to Central Asia and China was beyond his means. The German archaeologist Hermann Parzinger has found a letter in the Prussian State Archive which reveals that the financial backing to von Le Coq's expedition came from no one else than the last German emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm was obsessed with Greek culture and supported one of the expeditions with 32,000 German gold marks. Von Le Coq was associated with the Museum für Völkerkunde (now called the Ethnological Museum of Berlin) in Berlin. Serving as assistant to the head of the Museum, Professor Albert Grünwedel, Le Coq helped plan and organize expeditions into the regions of western Asia, specifically areas near the Silk Road such as Gaochang. When Grünwedel fell ill before the departure of the second expedition, Le Coq was assigned to lead it. His account of the second and third German Turpan expeditions was published in English in 1928 as Buried Treasures of Chinese Turkestan. The expeditions found extensive networks of Buddhist and Manichaean cave temples in the Xinjiang region of Northwest China. Although many of the manuscripts found in the cave were destroyed during the excavation, von Le Coq speculated that he had discovered a major Manichaean library. Some of the paintings also led him to believe that he had found evidence of an Aryan culture, related to the Franks. With the help of his assistants, Theodor Bartus, Le Coq carved and sawed away over 360 kilograms (or 305 cases) of artifacts, wall-carvings, and precious icons, which were subsequently shipped to the museum. In Buried Treasures ..., Le Coq defends these "borrowings" as a matter of necessity, citing the turbulent nature of Chinese Turkestan at the time of the expeditions. Chinese consider this seizure a "colonial rapacity" comparable to the taking of the Elgin Marbles or the Koh-i-Noor diamond. The artifacts were put on display at the museum and were open to the public until 1944 when the relics were destroyed in a British bombing raid during World War II. He was born near Taunton, Somerset, and educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge. He was called to the Bar in 1837, and built up a thriving legal practice, which, in 1856, he abandoned to devote himself to literature and public life. His first literary venture was Eothen; or Traces of travel brought home from the East (London: J. Ollivier, 1844), a very popular work of Eastern travel, apparently first published anonymously, in which he described a journey he made about ten years earlier in Syria, Palestine and Egypt, together with his Eton contemporary Lord Pollington. Elliot Warburton said it evoked "the East itself in vital actual reality" and it was instantly successful. However, his magnum opus was THE INVASION OF THE CRIMEA: Its Origin, and an Account of its Progress down to the Death of Lord Raglan, in 8 volumes, published from 1863 to 1887 by Blackwood, Edinburgh, one of the most effective works of its class. The History, which Geoff Bocca describes as a book "by which no intelligent man can fail immediately to be fascinated, no matter to what page he might open it" has been accused of being too favourable to Lord Raglan and unduly hostile to Napoleon III for whom the author had an extreme aversion. The town of Kinglake in Victoria, Australia, and the adjacent national park are named after him. A Whig, Kinglake was elected at the 1857 general election as one of the two Members of Parliament (MP) for Bridgwater, having unsuccessfully contested the seat in 1852. He was returned at next two general elections, but the result of the 1868 general election in Bridgwater was voided on petition on 26 February 1869. No by-election was held, and after a Royal Commission found that there had been extensive corruption, the town was disenfranchised in 1870.

Turkey and Russia, having proximity and a shared destiny with each other due to being historical neighbors, have had many ups and downs throughout history ranging from hostilities and war to friendship, support and cooperation. With globalization setting in and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Turkish-Russian relations grew to become multi-faceted and multidimensional, providing a rich ground for scientific academic studies and research. History no doubt is still a prominent field. Joint publications, symposiums and conferences on history carried out in the recent period have been concrete indicators of the developing cooperation between Turkey and Russia. Maintaining and developing this cooperation is of vital importance for the future. As a result of contacts and meetings with the esteemed head and academicians of the Turkish Studies Programme of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of Oriental Studies, the idea has emerged to compile a book on the work of some distinguished Turkish and Russian historians and academics, particularly on the history of the Caucasus region. In accordance with this understanding, the Center for Eurasian Studies (AVIM) is pleased to edit this historical academic study in a book. We are grateful to all the participants for their valuable contributions, all outcome of meticulous academic work. We also trust this initiative will help to encourage Turkish and Russian historians and academics to pursue more extensive and comprehensive studies and inspire them to accelerate their work.
