In fine condition. A very well kept copy. ~ First edition. Very rare. The identity of the POW "British Officer" remained a mystery and it is just as well a fictitious personality. In any event the source for the book is an article in the German magazine "Unterhaltungsblätter für Welt- und Menschenkunde" which the publisher, Gerrit Portielje, saw sometime in 1826 and translated into Dutch. No further biographical details were provided or could be found.

Remnant, with his stamp, publisher's blind stamp within oval garland to upper board, spine lettered direct and gilt ruled, a little worn and restored, gilt turn-ins, corner-tips rubbed, lower inner hinge cracked but firm, upper inner hinge restored, all edges sprinkled. Overall fine internal condition. ~ First edition thus. Robert Southey (1774-1843) was an English poet of the Romantic school, and one of the so-called "Lake Poets". Although his fame tends to be eclipsed by that of his contemporaries such as William Wordsworth, Southey's verse enjoys enduring popularity. Born in Bristol, he was educated at Westminster School (from which he was expelled for writing a magazine article condemning flogging) and Balliol College, Oxford. (Of his time at Oxford, Southey was later to say "All I learnt was a little swimming (.) and a little boating") He published his first collection of poems in 1794, and continued publishing over 20 major works throughout his life.

Two Plays bound together: 162 p. Continuous pagination. Early ownership of J. Waldier, 1774, on first title page. Bottom margin of The Funeral title page clipped. 12 mo. 155mm. Virtually disbound. This perhaps should best be considered a candidate for rebinding. Sir Richard Steele (ca. 1672-1729), was a famed english author and politician. The Funeral (first produced in 1702), with its patriotic motifs, apparently attracted the favourable attention of the King himself. The Tender Husband, a comedy, had a brief initial run in April 1705. It returned to Drury Lane for performances later in the year and remained a staple of the London stage repertory for many decades, without remuneration for the author. It is significant that Steele did not have another new play produced until many years later when he was a partner in the Drury Lane management and thus able to reap rewards both as author and as manager - DNB. Small 4to 210 x 155mm: 80pp with large folding copper-engraved frontispiece "Procession of Kings and Queens with over 150 robed figures" measuring a full 440 mm x 350 mm a second folding engraving "The Manner of the Champions performing the Ceremony of ye Challenge" and 12 woodcuts in the text depicting various ceremonial objects including crowns maces scepters and coronation rings. Bound in early possibly contemporary quarter sheep with marbled boards red morocco lettering piece gilt all edges marbled. Bookplate of Buddle Atkinson to front paste-down. A sturdy unsophisticated copy frontispiece slightly spotted along folds sporadic light soiling and browning binding rubbed along spine and corners but an excellent example of a scarce book. ESTC Citation No. T113877. Lowndes 526. Bindley pt. vi 1039. Not in Halkett & Laing. Buddle Atkinson's bookplate appears in Hugo's Catalogue of Thomas Bewick's works but it is in fact engraved on steel not wood and came from the workshop of Mark Lambert one of Bewick's pupils. The plate was designed and engraved by George F. Robinson who joined Lambert's workshop in 1841 and who in the course of 50 years became chief engraver and director of all art works carried out by the firm. The plate was produced when Atkinson b.1841 was a young child perhaps for putting in books that had been owned by his father John Buddle so it likely dates from 1845-1850. N. B. With few exceptions always identified we only stock books in exceptional condition carefully preserved in archival removable polypropylene sleeves. Half calf over marbled boards spine with raised bands forming compartments morocco lettering piece in the second compartment<br/> <br/> The largest and one of the rarest "Arctic blue books" concerning the search for Franklin: the reports arising out of Belcher's Expedition conducted between April 1852 and September 1854.<br/> <br/> Sir John Franklin's doomed 1845 expedition his fourth to the Arctic and third as commander set out in 1845 to search for the fabled Northwest Passage. In September 1846 the expedition's ships became trapped in the ice off King William Island which would be their final resting place. The crew spent the next year and a half trapped there before attempting to walk south dying along the way in the Arctic tundra hundreds of miles from the nearest European settlements. After three years without hearing a word from the expedition the British Admiralty launched a massive search for the missing ships. Spurred by a large reward many expeditions from Britain and the United States set out on the hunt beginning in 1848 and continuing through the next decade. This "blue book" a series of parliamentary reports named for the original blue paper wrappers which were issued with many but not all the reports contains official reports on Belcher's expedition. Five ships under the general command of Captain Edward Belcher were sent by the Admiralty to search for Sir John Franklin and his crew in the regions of Wellington Channel and Melville Island. Exploration within the Eastern Division was directed by Belcher and the Western Division by Captain Henry Kellett. With his depot ship stationed at Beechey Island off southwestern Devon Island Belcher took the Assistance and Pioneer north into Wellington Channel and wintered in 1852-53 at Northumberland Sound. Meanwhile the Resolute and Intrepid under Kellett sailed to the west and wintered in 1852-53 at Dealy Island Bridport Inlet and southern Melville Island. For the winter of 1853-54 Belcher's vessels moved south to Baring Bay whereas Kellett's vessels were frozen-in near Cape Cockburn on the southwestern part of Bathurst Island. All these vessels were abandoned in 1854. The depot ship North Star under Commander W.J.S. Pullen remained at Beechey Island throughout. The Belcher Expedition papers comprise three groups: those of Belcher Kellett and Pullen. Two other expeditions are also referred to which pertain to the Eastern Canadian Arctic i.e. those of Commander Edward Inglefield in 1854 and John Rae in 1853-54. In addition relatively minor contributions to this volume are made by Captain Richard Collinson 1851-54 of the Enterprise Captain Wallace Houston 1854 of the Trincomalee Commander Robert Mc'Clure 1853-54 of the Investigator Commander Rochfort Maguire 1853-54 of the Plover and Commander Henry Trollope 1854 of the Rattlesnake all of which operated almost exclusively in the Bering Sea and western Arctic regions<br/> <br/> Arctic Bibliography 45245; TPL 3549. L'auteur analyse la situation géopolitique pour préconiser un changement radical dans la diplomatie française: sortir de la Sainte-Alliance et choisir de "garder une neutralité imposante entre les deux suprématies rivales [Russie et Grande-Bretagne] (…) et s'élever au rang d'une domination intermédiaire indispensable pour l'équilibre de l'Europe" (p. 148). Dans un post-scriptum composé au courant des événements dramatiques de cette année 1827, l'auteur appelle à un "nouveau système politique" en France, "unique moyen d'affranchir notre pays de la tyrannie des jésuites, de secouer le joug des dominations étra'ngères et de prolonger la paix du continent". Joseph-Victor Aubernon (1783-1851) avait été officier des guerres d'Empire, ancien député, un moment diplomate et plusieurs fois préfet. Quelques rousseurs éparses. Bon exemplaire.
