Il mit en place le cadre de son enquête en visitant diverses paroisses et, pour obtenir les autres renseignements employa une personne, qui devint ainsi le premier chercheur de terrain… Sa méthode est demeurée la base de l'enquête sociologique. N'oublions pas que Malthus décrivait Eden comme le seul disciple d'Adam Smith qui ait produit une œuvre significative au XVIIIème siècle » (P.M.M.).La traduction est du duc de La Rochefoucauld-Liancourt (1747-1827), député de la noblesse à la Constituante.
