The community enlisted the support of the British Consul in Belgrade to alleviate their situation. This document reproduces the ongoing correspondence between the community the British Government the Alliance Israelite Universal and J M Montefiore as the President of the Board of Deputies of British Jews in trying resolve these difficulties. The correspondence includes letters from Sir Francis Goldsmid first Jew to become an English barrister and member of Parliament for Reading Lord John Russell an English prime minister who was Foreign Secretary at this time and others.
