Rhode, John (pseudonym of Cecil John Charles Street)
MURDER AT BRATTON GRANGE: Dr. Priestley
New York: Dodd Mead & Company 1929. First U.S. Edition. British title: The Davidson Case Bles 1929. Orange cloth covers are worn at edges spine is darkened covers soiled and rear cover stained but an overall very good copy. "John Rhodes Major Streets latest detective story The Davidson Case US Title: Murder at Bratton Grange is an unusual product for two reasons: its climax begins to evolve at the point where it is the unwritten rule for ordinary detective stories to end -- at the apprehension of the criminal; and it expresses the authors view on a much-debated question arising from a certain type of crime while at the same time illustrating a power of appeal to sentiment which none of his previous books even hinted at. Another intriguing feature of the story is that it involves two murders an actual murder and a "shadow" murder staged to eclipse the real murder -- so cleverly intertwining that it is nigh impossible for the average reader to distinguish between the real and the artificial. The double murder is John Rhodes ingenious machinery for preserving the solution to the mystery from untimely anticipation by keeping the cloud of suspicion hovering uncertainly over one person then another. The problem baldly outlined is deceivingly simple. A man travelling to his house in the body of a carriers van -- he has elected to ride inside to be able to keep a watch on some precious luggage of his -- is discovered dead by the driver on arrival at the destination -- stabbed to the and heart minus the luggage. He apparently went into the van alive and at the end of a non-stop run was brought out dead! The "stonewall" complexion of the problem is typical of the author so are the subtle little incidents that heighten its complexity but find due explanation in the unravelling. As usual Dr. Priestly the scientist and investigator of crime and his bright assistant stand inscrutably behind the drama influencing" the moves of Inspector Hanslet of Scotland Yard. In these respects and because of the part played in it by scientific research The Davidson Case and the authors preceding work The House on Tollard Ridge would be identified as coming from the pen of John Rhode yet after a careful perusal of both books one would almost be inclined to question that fact. In The House on Tollard Ridge what might have been merely a clever string of mathematical deductions was moulded into a first-rate mystery story by the implication of the supernatural; in The Davidson case a rather bewildering maze of discoveries and theories becomes an absorbing drama by the introduction of the human element which so many detective yarns ignore -- John Rhodes earlier books have not been over-rich in it. Because of the cleverness and the intimate knowledge of human psychology unfolded in its pages The Davidson case must though one reluctantly admits it take precedence even to The House on Tollard Ridge. Its climax is enthralling. Dr. Priestly and Inspector Hamlet are convinced of the guilt of the man who languishes in Shepton Mallet gaol. They have bait up an unanswerable case against him yet the Inspector is uneasy the prisoners manner and the fear of something unexpected provoked it and Dr. Priestly is disconcerted at having encompassed the end of a fellow-scientist who committed a crime with the highest motives. The trial takes place at the Wells Assizes. The eyes of the nation are upon the case; the reputation of Scotland Yard is at stake. The case for the prosecution is ably stated by an eminent barrister the feeling of the court which hitherto had favoured the prisoner rises against the supine cross-examination of a supposedly brilliant counsel for the defence and matters look black for the prisoner. Then the whole trend of the proceedings is altered by totally unexpected evidence produced by medical experts and the prisoner is acquitted amid popular rejoicing. Scotland Yards and Dr. Priestlys reputations sink to zero; it is the first time the Doctor has blundered. But had he blundered The answer is a treat in store for those who read the book. The opening chapters contain a fine example of dramatic irony. Three persons two women and a man sat at supper one night and there it was suggested that for the benefit of humanity it would be well for a certain man to be dead. Next day the man spoken of was found murdered. Did those three have ought to do with it That is of the questions that arises but the great question the reader is left to ponder over after finally closing the book is this: Should a man of great business ability and whose work for science has been extremely valuable be imprisoned or executed for having brought about the death of a disreputable character with no other motive than the welfare of a famous firm and its hundreds of employees which would probably have been ruined by the victims continued existence John Rhodes large following will agree with us that The Davidson Case is a clever and entertaining book." -- Somerset Standard 12th July 1929 . First Edition. Hardcover. Good-Very Good/No Jacket. Book. Dodd, Mead & Company

Richard, Jules (Thomas-Jules-Richard Maillot); L. du Paty; Louis [Isaac] Trinquier; A. Souze.
La Jeune Armée. Illustrée d'aquarelles et de dessins.
Quarto. Pp. 315 (verso blank). Plus 40 leaves of hand-coloured plates, including frontispiece. Large armorial head- and tail-pieces, illustrated initials. Title-page printed in red and black, and with handsome armorial device. Half-title present. Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's full lavishly decorated cloth by A. Souze, large armorial illustration in gold, black, and silver within elaborate frame, gilt lettering to cover and spine, illustration to spine and lower cover, all edges gilt. The binding incorporates a second, elaborately decorated original paper cover, printed separately by the Paris firm of Draeger et Lesieur, beautifully illustrated and hand-coloured, gilt, blue, and red lettering within gold frame; spine ends bit worn, first inner hinges slightly cracked. In a very good condition. Handsome book, well preserved. ~ First edition. Jules Richard (Thomas-Jules-Richard Maillot) (1825-1899). Louis Isaac Trinquier (1853-1922). The lively plates are the result of a complicated and delicate process, now obsolete, which was invented in the early 1850's by Firmin Gillot. Known as Gillotage, the process turned a lithographic drawing into a relief plate. Employing both planographic and relief methods, the process remained purely manual, involving no photography. The lithograph was transferred to zinc and then etched, in an extremely laborious process, to make a metal relief block from which the final print was made. Noteworthily, many of Daumier's lithographic plates were treated in this way before their publication. Here, the plates are delicately hand-coloured by contemporary hand, rich in detail, and in a particularly good condition.

The Eclipse of a Great Power : Modern Britain 1870-1975
No marks or inscriptions. Small crease to lower corner of front cover, none to rear or to spine. A very clean very tight copy with bright unmarked boards and no bumping to corners. 408pp. Spanning a century, this study encompasses both the expansion and the decline of the British Empire and examines the British experience in almost every aspect of the period. A particular feature of the book is the stress it places upon the problems and identity of the United Kingdom as a whole - the constantly changing relationship between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
