Marbled paper to front paste down and end papers. Raised bands to spine with gilt lettering. Title to spine is that of Antiquities of Tewkesbury and does not mention Guide to the Lakes or Lymphatic Glands. t.e.g. Rubbing to edges and corners of binding. Stain to edge and bottom edge of text block. A Guide to the Lakes lacks engraved frontispiece however two plates and fold out are present. A remarkable character Thorburn emigrated from Scotland to New York in 1794. He evolved from being a nailmaker to prominent seedsman. He was the inspiration for the protagonist "Lawrie Todd" in John Galt's triple-decker LAWRIE TODD OR THE SETTLERS IN THE WOODS 1830. He married his third wife in 1853. This work is vigorous counter-point to the travel books by Frances Trollope and Isaac Fidler from 1832. It is highly opinionated and provoked a short book response by William Carver A BONE TO GNAW FOR GRANT THORBURN. Note: with at least one pencilled gloss probably by the 1881 owner. A beautiful set presented by William Windham to W Wilbraham Ford on the latter's leaving Eton at Christmas 1864. Windham's signed holograph inscription appears on a blank preliminary of the Thames volume; Ford's signature appears on blank preliminary of the second volume. Crown quarto. Pp. vi, 271. Plus 19 fine lithograph maps, some of which are folding, bound at end. Hardcover, bound in contemporary quarter calf and marbled boards, green vellum French corners, spine with false raised bands between compartments, gilt lettering direct; boards were partly detached at one time and inner hinges were expertly strengthened and joints mended; old military institutional stamps to title-page and verso of maps, discreet magnetic strip at bottom of one page, even browning to some maps, some spotting. Withal a respectful tome in good condition. ~ First edition. Very rare. Jordan 3768; Baldamus II, 52. See also: B. E. Palat: "Bibliographie générale de la guerre de 1870-1871" (Paris, 1896), p. 464. The charm of this book lies in the wonderful lithographic maps which clearly were not meant to serve as mere carriers of information but to provide charm and elegance due to their artistic merit. Six of the maps have a hole dug into them close to the blank margin, probably a rodent's activity, with very minor loss. They were all expertly restored by professional hand. One has the repair clearly in the blank margin and two others in practically blank areas of the image.
