Adolf Beck was twice the victim of wrongful conviction on two related cases due to mistaken identity. The efforts of the judge who presided over his second trial led to the establishment of a committee of inquiry chaired by the noted jurist and Master of the Rolls Sir Richard Henn Collins 1842-1911. The committee determined that Beck was convicted twice through unreliable methods of identification erroneous eyewitness testimony and a rush to convict the accused. Along with its influence on police procedure the committee's report led to the creation of the English Court of Criminal Appeal in 1907. These accounts were published to amuse titillate and perhaps instruct and they are interesting today for their insights into the legal and cultural history of the early Georgian period. This title is the third and final set in a series of multi-volume trial collections one published in 1734-35 another in 1742. "À la faveur d'un quatrième séjour à Londres (mai-août 1839), Flora Tristan actualisa la vaste enquête sur l'Angleterre industrielle. Elle montrait l'Angleterre comme le laboratoire de la civilisation qui ne tarderait pas à gagner l'Europe; elle mettait en garde contre un modèle de développement où l'homme était sacrifié à la tyrannie du profit. Les 'Promenades dans Londres' approfondissaient sa vocation d'enquêtrice sociale" (S. Michaud, in Maitron cd-rom). Du point de vue de la composition et du style, certainement le meilleur des livres de Flora Tristan, où elle donne toute la mesure de son intelligence, de sa sensibilité et de sa lucidité politique. La parution de l'ouvrage en mai 1840 coïncida avec une crise économique majeure, une grève quasi-générale des corporations parisiennes et une structuration de l'organisation ouvrière à un niveau jamais encore atteint. "Les Promenades" obtinrent, dans ce contexte, un accueil élogieux de la presse républicaine et socialiste et un important retentissement populaire. "Au fond, à scruter de près les 'Promenades dans Londres', on peut dire que trois livres s'y trouvent superposés : une enquête de science sociale, une didactique révolutionnaire, un Evangile romantique" (François Bedarida). In the spirited albeit corny opening scene to his latest adveture the accident-prone Lestrade survives a fall from the upper deck of the Titanic as it is slipping out to sea. Lestrade spends the remainder of the book battling crime and the wheelchair he's confined in almost equal measure. J. S. Virtue London 1892. This India Paper Edition is limited to Five Hundred Copies. Out of series copy presented to the publisher Crosby Lockwood. Large folio 18 x 13 inches. Engraved title vignette and 39 engraved plates together with leaves of descriptive text. Disbound all leaves loose as usual due to the perishing of the caoutchouc. The title-page is damp-stained. The following plates have the following faults to the margins not affecting the images themselves: Ramsgate East & West Looe St. Mawes & Portsmouth with marginal damp marking; Weymouth & Devonport with marginal foxing. Whitstable corner torn away from blank margin. One plate with vertical crease to margin. Some edge chipping to a few of the text leaves 1/3rd of one plate individual printed title leaf removed. The owner of this book was Henry Augustus Muhlenberg (1823-1854) was a PA politician and Congressman. He was from a famous political dynasty. Muhlenberg attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, then studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1844, practicing law in Reading. He was elected to the State Senate in 1849, serving until 1852 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and began Congressional service on March 4, 1853, and died less than a year later.
