A copy with prestigious provenance having been from the Society of Writers to Her Majesty's Signet a private society of Scottish solicitors dating back to 1594 and part of the College of Justice; with the Society's handsome engraved bookplate but no other ex-libris markings. With eight maps five of which are in colour and of those four are folding and with five plates from the author's photographs. 8vo publisher's original blind-paneled maroon cloth the upper cover and spine with lettering in gilt. xii 373 2 pp. A very good and handsome copy much better than one typically finds the cloth is rich and dark with no fading to the spine and with bright vivid gilt the lightest touch of shelving to the tips and corners the hinges firm and tight the text solid and clean with just a touch of age mellowing. SCARCE FIRST EDITION ON RUSSIA'S ASIAN FRONT. The author a scholar on Eastern subjects spent four months traveling across the Russian empire from Vladivostok to the frontier of Galicia in the Western Ukraine. He is quick to point out the rapid growth of Russia's power and influence in the Far East; an influence soon to grow even greater with the event of locomotive transport from St. Petersburg to Port Arthur. 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait and 10 plates on 7, fore-edge browning slightly; original regimental grey cloth, upper board blocked with crest in black, upper board and backstrip lettered in black, covers mildly age-stained else a very good, clean copy. The astonishing, if gruelling, account of the 25th (Navvies) Battalion of The Middlesex Regiment in WWI, and THE ONLY BRITISH UNIT HISTORY IN THE RUSSIAN INTERVENTION. 'Ward's story really belongs in the main to the 'after-the-war' period in Russia. He gives an interesting account of Admiral Koltchak, whom he admired, and shows how insuperable were the difficulties which that unfortunate patriot had to face. It is now beginning to be recognised that Koltchak was, with the possible exception of Wrangel, far and away the ablest of the White [Russian] commanders. For the rest, his [Ward's] story is one of gallantry and endurance in frightful conditions displayed by troops for the most part of a low physical category' (Falls). 'In 1915 [Ward] raised the 25th Navvies Battalion, which was then ordered to the Far East and ultimately to Siberia to support Admiral Koltchak.' (Sutcliffe). Very scarce. Paris, Librairie d'Amyot, 1843. 2 volumes in-8 (220x140), brochage éditeur non rogné. 2ff. n.ch. -XXXV - 381pp. - 393pp. Première édition de la traduction française, établie par le prince Emmanuel Galitzin qui l'a dédiée au célèbre scientifique prussien Alexandre de Humboldt. Elle est ornée de 2 frontispices lithographies, dont l'un représente une scène arctique, et d'une grande carte dépliante du nord-est de la Sibérie. Charge d'une mission d'exploration des cotes septentrionales de la Russie, l'officier Ferdinand de Wrangell (1797-1870) quitta Saint-Petersbourg en 1820 pour se rendre a Yakoutsk, ville du centre de la Sibérie. De là, durant quatre ans, il explora un territoire immense et pratiquement inconnu situe entre la Lena et le détroit de Bering. Son ouvrage contient le résultat des travaux menés par l’expédition en matière de glaciologie, de climatologie et de biomagnétisme. Il renferme aussi de précieuses descriptions sur les Tchouktches, peuple habitant les rives de l’océan Arctique et de la mer de Bering. Un intéressant Précis des voyages exécutés avant l'année 1820 aux côtes nord du continent asiatique, entre la mer de Karsk et le détroit de Béring occupe 25 pages au début du premier volume qui contient un commentaire sur 46 voyages.
