Questo libro rivela i complessi processi culturali che hanno reso il Kalevala un mito esso stesso: la nascita degli studi folklorici e mitologici in Finlandia, le personali idee di Lönnrot e i suoi viaggi etnografici, l'importanza dei più celebri cantori, il successo del Kalevala in patria e all'estero, l'importanza del poema per il futuro movimento indipendentista. L'interpretazione di Pentikäinen, il quale ha svolto ricerche approfondite con gli sciamani lapponi e siberiani, evidenzia l'importanza dei contenuti magici e sciamanici nell'epica finnica.
