‎Erste Ausgabe. - Eines der ersten Bücher mit Platindrucken. - "Der Platindruck, oder wie man auch häufiger sagte, die Platinotypie, war eine Variante der üblichen Silbersalz-Kopierverfahren, es wurden an Stelle der Silberschichten nun Mischungen aus Eisen- und Platinsalzen verwendet. Die Platinotypie wurde 1873 von William Willis in England erfunden. Das Verfahren wurde durch die Österreicher Pizzighelli und von Hübl ausgearbeitet und 1882 publiziert. Man konnte sich die Papiere selbst bereiten, sie waren aber auch im Handel vorpräpariert käuflich. Der Platin Kopierprozeß war ein bißchen umständlicher als der übliche Silbersalz-Kopierprozeß, aber doch spürbar teurer. Ausgeübt wurde der Platindruck, weil man ästhetisch ansehlichere Ergebnisse erzielen konnte, matte tiefe Schwärzen, Platinpapiere hatten oft ?künstlerische' Texturen wie rauhes Büttenpapier. "Das Verfahren liefert Bilder, die an Sättigung des Tones und Zartheit der Übergänge der Photogravure gleichkommen und an Haltbarkeit die Silberbilder jedenfalls weit übertreffen. ... Durch das Steigen der Platinpreise nach der Jahrhundertwende und den vermehrten Einsatz von verbesserten photographischen Auskopier- und Vergrößerungspapieren, wurde die Platinotypie bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg völlig verdrängt" (F. Heidtmann, Wie das Photo ins Buch kam S. 467 ff.). - "Burnett war es, der anläßlich der Jahrestagung der British Association 1859 die erste Platindrucke vorstellte. Allerdings mußten noch zwanzig Jahre vergehen, ehe der Platindruck kommerziell eingeführt wurde, denn obgleich William Willis in London 1873 ein Verfahren entwickelte (im Juni 1873 wurde darauf ein englisches Patent erteilt), hielt er seine Methode erst nach einer Reihe von Verbesserungen für ausgereift genug, um sie auf den Markt zu bringen. Die im Herbst 1879 gegründete Platinotype Company in London erteilte Amateur-und Berufsphotographen für fünf Shilling eine Lizenz und lieferte alle nötigen Materialien. Das Papier wurde in mehreren Empfindlichkeitsstufen verkauft. ... Mit seiner außerordentlich fein differenzierten Halbtonskala lieferte der Platindruck, nach der Kalotypie, die schönsten Abzüge. Sein silbergrauer Ton war vor allem bei Photographen beliebt, die ein mehr als durchschnittliches ästhetisches Empfinden besaßen" (H. Gernsheim, Geschichte der Photographie S. 415 f.). - Gelenke etwas berieben, Innengelenke angeplatzt, zeitgenöss. A wonderful work of history, folklore, nostalgia, and sociology by the Newcastle antiquary, John Brand (1744-1806). The first volume deals with holidays and customs associated with them, such as: New Years Eve; Valentine's Day; customs surrounding many long lost feast days; Easter; pagan mid-Summer rites and dances; Allhallow Even; Yule and Christmastide; Harvests; Etc. The second volume deals with customs and ceremonies relating to life events and common folklore, such as: marriage; death; communion; sailors going tp sea; fairs; fairies; devils and witchcraft; omens; charms; divination; Etc. There are also over 30 pages describing games and sports, including: Archery; Boxing; Foot-Ball; Goff or Golf; Nine Pins; Races; the Ring; Wrestling; etc. & etc. First issued as a small octavo in 1777, Brand continued collecting materials for a revised edition for the rest of his life. He acquired a large amount of additional information from the statistical enquiries in Scotland instigated by Sir John Sinclair. A second edition was planned in 1795, but Brand was apparently overwhelmed by the task of arranging systematically so much material. He did not live to complete the project. Instead the collections were purchased after his death by a bookseller for L600 and were incorporated into this new edition by Sir Henry Ellis (1777-1869). The whole of volume two is a type facsimile of the Latin and English text of the first edition (circa. 1638). Full leather bindings; spines highly decorated; front board of volume one detached. Of this edition only 125 copies were printed. Subscribers to this very limited edition include the great book collectors Richard Heber and Thomas Frognall Dibdin. Manuscript note in volume one: "Bought at Poynder Sale. June 1855. Sotheby. Lot 67. 1L. This is probably John Poynder (1779-1849) - but his very valuable library was apparently sold by Sotheby in 1850. 'Barnabae Itinerarium, or Barnabee's Journal' is the most famous of poet Richard Brathwaite's (1588?-1673). It appeared in 1638 under the pseudonym 'Corymbaeus.' It is a sparkling record of English travel, in Latin and English verse. It was neglected in its own age, but being reprinted under the title of 'Drunken Barnaby's Four Journeys,' achieved a considerable success during the eighteenth century, and is still in some vogue. The authorship was not ascertained until the publication of the seventh edition by Joseph Haslewood in 1818. Previously supposed authors were known as: Corymbaeus; Philogenes Pandonius; Musaeus Palatinus; Clitus-Alexandrinus. Southey pronounced the original the best piece of rhymed Latin in modern literature. There are great details of 17th century English social life, and drinking customs.
