‎Now offered for sale at the instruction of the Executors by Messrs J. & E. Bumpus Ltd. 350 Oxford Street London W.1. Circa 1956. . 120 pages unpaginated 12mo. Stitched without covers. In fair condition: worn particularly the first two leaves and aged. A marvellous collection described in a carefully printed and compiled catalogue of 901 lots. A two-page 'Prefatory Note' has a long quotation from one of Meynell's catalogues beginning: 'My books must at my death be turned to account. What I have to fear and what I hereby forbid is that they should be offered as a whole to some insensitive dealer who judges a collection by its bindings its look of prosperity the presence of those standard 'rarities' that are to be had from every expensive bookseller and found in every wealthy man's library.' Following the quotation Bumpus i.e. Wilson points out that 'Into a large number of entries in this list have been introduced the phrases by which Everard Meynell characterised the book in question in his own notes of his stock and library.' Divided into two roughly equal parts: 'Books written before 1800' and 'Books Mss. and Letters written after 1800'. The latter include sections of Browning Coleridge Coventry Patmore and Rossetti associations. There are also long descriptions of a number of AlsS to Patmore: nine from Robert Bridges £25; three from Robert Browning and his wife eighteen guineas; five from Thomas Carlyle £70; Gerard Manley Hopkins lots 651 to 655; Francis Thompson lots 880 to 882; Tennyson lots 864 and 865; and six letters from Lady Tennyson to Mrs Patmore eight guineas. Among the single letters offered are items by Mary Shelley ten guineas and Robert Louis Stevenson £65. Scarce: only two copies on OCLC WorldCat. ‎'at the St James' Theatre kindly lent by Mr. George Alexander On Friday June 7th 1907 at 3 p.m.'. 4pp. folio. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged paper slightly worn at head. The front page is headed 'H.R.H. Princess Christian and the Royal Members are Patrons of a Private Farewell Matinee arrranged by Lady Romney on behalf of the Green Park Club for Mr. and Mrs. Luther Munday'. The names of twenty performers are listed beneath this headed by Herbert Beerbohm Tree with various other individuals named. The central two pages form a single arrangement of dozens of facsimile signatures beneath the following message from the Countess of Romney as President of the Green Room Club: 'Names are the beads of Memory's Rosay. I have had these autographs fac-similied from Mr. Munday's collection of letters because they connect the past with the present. These Stars in the firmament of Art have all and many more without money or price taken some part in the Thousand Hours of Play and Song - social gatherings initiated and managed by Mr. & Mrs. Munday. To this Farewell Tribute from the Green Park Club headd by its Royal members I have added overleaf one other record viz: that of the original Lyric Club. These with 76 organized for charities comprise 400 Entertainments given during the past 20 years.' The final page is headed 'Copy of a Record of the Old Lyric Club 1887. The girl has unkempt hair and wears crimson ear-rings a straw hat a blue jacket and a pink-spotted white pinafore tucked up at her waist.' ‎Red Cross Garden Southwark London. Dated 15 August 1914. On three sides of a vellum bifolium supplied by the London law stationers Witherby & Co. Dimensions of leaf 39 x 26 cm. In good condition lightly aged and creased. The document is a draft with several emendations in pencil including a lengthy addition in the margin of first page and a shorter one on the second page. Laid out in customary style within red rules. Docketed on fourth side: 'Dated 15th August 1914 The Earl of Ducie and Others to The Earl of Ducie and Others Red Cross Garden Assignment'. With stamp of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners signed by Hugh de Bock Porter. The document is signed by eight individuals: the Earl of Ducie Lancelot William Bennett Charles Stewart Loch Mary Lumsden Helen Ironside Janet Johnson Thomas Slingsby Tanner Cecil Antony Nussey with each of the eight signatures accompanied by that of a different witness. Eight wafer seals in red wax on a length of green ribbon. The document refers back to the original 999-year lease of 1888 with original lessees 'the said Earl of Ducie William Waldegrave Viscount Wolmer M.P. Herbert Bulkey Mackworth Praed Robert Hunter C.B. i.e. Sir Robert Hunter 1844-1913 Octavia Hill and the said Helen Ironside and the said Janet Johnson'. The document explains that as Hill and Hunter both instrumental in the foundation of the National Trust have since died 'the Assignors are desirous of vesting the said premises in the assignees'. Red Cross Garden was laid out in 1887 on the site of a burnt down paper factory and a derelict warehouse. With its ornamental pond a bandstand a covered play area for children and colourful mosaics the garden was the venue for the annual Southwark Flower Show and other fetes and celebrations. ‎The London College of Educational Dance Training The Lodge Rawdon Hall Holyport near Maidenhead Berkshire. 1944 1945 and 1946. The London College of Educational Dance Training opened at Rawdon Hall in 1944 merged with Middlesex University in 1994 and shut in 2003. Grace Cone the first principal retired in 1966 and was replaced by her vice-principal Anita Heyworth. Heyworth retired in 1973 and was replaced by Phrosso Pfister. Pfister had become a student at the college in 1945 following war service with the SOE in Egypt and Italy and had become a staff member in 1949. The present collection of five items is from Pfister's papers. ONE: Early printed prospectus for three-year course at the 'London College of Educational Dance Training' with The Lodge Holyport near Maidenhead Berkshire given as the 'Temporary address prior to London residence'. 3pp. 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition aged and worn. Slug: 'H & S 9491/46'. The reverse of the first leaf lists the thirteen members of the 'Advisory Board' including Cyril Beaumont and Olive Ripman together with the staff headed by 'Principal: - Miss Grace Cone Member Grand Council Technical and Executive Committees and Examiner Royal Academy of Dancing. Advanced Member Greek Dance Association. Fellow Licentiate and Member 6 Branches of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc. Advanced Cecchetti Certificate and Ballroom Committee.' and 'Vice-Principal: - Miss Anita Heyworth Fellow of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc. and Examiner Natural Movement Branch. Associate of the Ballroom Branch.' The prospectus proper on twenty-eight lines of small print heads the recto of the second leaf and begins: 'The recognition that Dancing properly taught by teachers with a scientific understanding of movement can play a very important part in the education of the growing child is opening a new field for the dancing profession. The London College of Educational Dance Training has been founded to meet this requirement.' The 'Fees: payable in advance' are given at the foot of the page. The cost of 'Full training including board residence' is fifty guineas. TWO: Typed Letter Signed from Grace Cone. On the College letterhead Rawdon Hall which states that she is 'Assisted by highly qualified Staff'. 28 June 1945. Accepting Pfister as a student and adding that 'there is a very big demand for qualified teachers in schools and I cannot fill all the vacancies; I do hope you will be successful in obtaining your release.' In monogrammed envelope of the Cone School. THREE: One ALS and three TLsS to Pfister from Anita Heyworth. The first an autograph Air Mail letter to 'Ensign H. P. Pfister 18027 Military Est. 57. C. M. F.' Dated 9 December 1944. Sending 'Christmas greetings from Miss Atkinson and myself' and expressing keenness on having her 'as a student at the London College of Dance Training' and sending a prospectus. The 'Advisory Board' in Item One includes 'Miss Madge Atkinson – Hon. Vice-Chairman and Founder of Natural Movement Branch of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing Inc.' Second a typed letter on the College letterhead 20 March 1945. She is pleased to hear of Pfister's return to England and is enclosing 'the promised prospectus which you can use for your interview with Commander Cope – Tell her that you wish to enter a training college for Teachers – that we are running on similar lines to the physical training colleges – but with dancing as the main practical subject instead of gymnastics'. She hopes that Pfister can join in September: 'I should think the war will be over by then so maybe they would release you'. Third a typed letter on the College letterhead 4 May 1945. She thanks her for writing about her live in Italy and hopes that her 'holiday at Warminster will help to complete the cure'. She also deserves 'a little time of gaiety' at the London theatres. 'It will be very nice indeed if you can do part time work in London and part time at the Cone School to get back into practise.' She suggests a meeting to discuss matters. 'Yes we were in Bognor for Sheila's show. It was very bad luck that she tore a muscle in her leg just five minutes before the curtain went up!' The 'war news' is 'grand': 'It makes one feel as though the news for which we have longed for so many years is a trifle unreal. It seems wrong to celebrate too much when men are still having to fight in the East.' Four typed letter from Rawdon Hall 18 June 1945. She is pleased to learn from Cone that Pfister is joining the College in the autumn. The term begins on 28 September and it is 'more than probable that we shall not be at Maidenhead as we hope to find a building nearer to London … We are very busy with rehearsals and work for our Advisory Board demonstration and therefore I am never in London where Pfister will be working in September at 'the Cone School' in an evening and seldom during the daytime just now.' The letter ends on the subject of attendance at 'the Imperial Congress'. One signatory has written a bar of music another has drawn a face another has written after his name 'now then – up beat!' The first signature is that of the Punch cartoonist Bert Thomas 1883-1966 after which he has written 'BLIMEY'. Among the other signatories are the theatre critic James Agate 1877-1947 the artists C. R. W. The document begins: 'The British people have acclaimed the Russian Revolution. The only honest praise is to support its Foreign Policy.' The second section begins: 'On July 20th in fact 19 July 1917 by a majority of 214 to 116 the German Reichstag passed a Peace resolution supported by the Centre the Progressive and Social Democrat Parties as well as by the Alsace-Lorraine representatives.' The two letters each 1p. 4to. Both on aged paper with wear to left hand margin causing loss to text. In the first letter Lent gives details of 8 of his 17 purchases on that day adding that 'The Lots sold quite well a good many co<missions> are here also Bowes Blackwell Mc Leis<h> Taylor Scheurer. Edwards Pickering & E. Mathews have <left> marks.' In the second letter he gives details of 5 of his 10 purchases one of them for 'Mr Butterwick'. He gives details of three commissions which Butterwick left with him only one of which was successful. Catalogue: 31 1pp. 4to. In brown printed wraps. Aged and worn. Annotated in pencil with some of the 831 lots priced and named. A sturdy country-house library the top seller at £130 to Drayton was a first edition of Chesterfield's letters. Lightly aged and worn and ruckled from being laid down on paper backing. Tiny chip lost at foot. Sixteen female figures are shown in costumes representing newspapers from the 'Daily Mail' to 'The Sketch' and including 'Mdlle. Zangfretta as Fashion' around a central representation of a scene from the ballet featuring Adeline Genée as the Liberty of the Press. Mark Edward Perugini in his 'Art of Ballet' 1915 states of Genée that 'it was her performance as the Spirit of the "Liberty of the Press" in the famous Empire ballet "The Press" invented and designed by Mr. Wilhelm with the choreographic support of Mme. Lanner and music by Mons. Wenzel on February 14th 1898 that first marked her "and for many years to come" as a London "star." The ballet gave her scope for some wonderful and proved immensely popular. It was a novel idea artistically carried out and illustrated the history and power of the Fourth Estate. A number of charming coryphees were ingeniously attired as representatives of the various newspapers boys' costumes indicating the morning and girls' the evening journals. The venerable Times was typified by a man in the guise of Father Time with hour-glass and other symbols of his ancient office and accompanied by a retinue. Mme. Cavallazzi represented Caxton Father of the Printing Press; Mile. Zanfretta the Spirit of Fashion; and there were typical costumes for The Standard The Daily Telegraph The Globe The Daily Mail then two years old! The Illustrated London News who announced that she was " Established 1842 " The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News The Lady's Pictorial The Sketch The Referee and others too numerous to name. So popular did the ballet prove that this also ran for months and it was not until October of the same year that a new production " Alaska" was staged the scenario of which was by Mr. Wilhelm the choregraphy by Mme. ‎On letterhead of The London Steam Omnibus Company Limited 133 Finsbury Pavement London EC. July 1898. 2pp. 4to. Bifolium. Heavily-aged and worn. Addressed 'Dear Sir' and with facsimile of signature 'For the London Steam Omnibus Co. Ltd. A. Flemg Nisbett Secretary.' The circular begins with the reason for sending an advance copy of the prospectus. 'My object in giving you this early intimation is that you may if you desire secure beforehand a Founder's Share in the profits of the coming Steam Traffic upon the Roads - which Traffic appears likely to become one day as popular as Steam on Railways'. The circular continues: 'Parliament has now sanctioned this new system of locomotion and a faster and better Omnibus than the Horse Vehicles now runnign - working at far less cost - is now in the hands of this Company.' It continues by stressing the secure nature of 'the business of London Omnibuses' with reference to the 'present weekly returns'. A postscript deals with the details of subscription. In October 1899 the Company having changed its name to the Motor Traction Company commenced services between Kennington and Victoria via Westminster; the following year the route changed to Oxford Circus to Kennington; and in December 1900 it was withdrawn. An Act to render valid and effectual certain Articles of Agreement between the Mayor and Commonalty and Citizens of the City of London Governors of the Possessions Revenues and Goods of the Hospitals of Edward King of England the Sixth of Christ Bridewell and Saint Thomas the Apostle and of the Hospitals of Henry the Eighth King of England called "The House of the Poor" in West Smithfield near London and of the House and Hospital called Bethlehem and the Presidents Treasurers and Acting Governors of the said several Hospitals.' Bearing a number of underlinings and marginal annotations in a nineteenth-century hand presumably by a member of the solicitors 'Clayton Cookson & Wainewright' whose name is written on the blank last page together with '22 Geo. 3. c. 77'. While the copyright page gives no indication this edition was published after 1903 Brignano notes a revised and considerably expanded edition published by Latta in 1924 mentioning events in his life after 1903 and printing long essays by Carter G. ‎Portraits of Little Holy Flower Hold His Hand and Come in Camp Three American Indian Child Performers at the ‘Red Man Spectacle†Earl’s Court 1909‎

‎London 1909. Silver gelatin prints measuring 5 ½ x 4 ½ inches. Editorial marks to verso one marginal tear else about fine with fine contrast very good plus overall. Fine. Western shows particularly Buffalo Bill’s which ran in Earls Court for several years were highly influential in introducing the British public to American Indian culture often in highly fictionalized form. After the Buffalo Bill show ceased performing in London others followed including the The Golden West and American U.S.A. industries exhibition of 1909. Offered here are three photographs of American Indian children from the exhibition who were likely part of the show’s ‘Red Man Spectacle.†They are likely Oglala. The show featured a reenactment of an entirely fictitious event called the “Black Hawk Massacre in Colorado†and some veterans of Cody’s shows including Red Shirt Lone Bear and Painted Horse were among the performers. The three children pictured here are named Little Holy Flower Hold His Hand and Come in Camp. A note to a verso says the pictures were taken concurrently with the Franco-British Exposition which continued for several years in various iterations beginning in 1908. We find one variant image from this shoot otherwise no record of these images which may have been taken by the Brown Brothers firm or possibly ended up in their possession from another photographer. unknown‎
