Pubblicato per la prima volta da Fausto e Felice Niccolini tra il 1854 e il 1896 a Napoli, "Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei: disegnati e descritti" mirava a descrivere tutti gli aspetti della vita nell'antica città sommersa in sole 24 ore dalla catastrofica eruzione del Vesuvio e conservatasi sotto la cenere per oltre 1600 anni. Entrambi i fratelli Niccolini avevano uno spiccato interesse per questa meraviglia archeologica. Prima di intraprendere l'ambizioso progetto editoriale, Fausto aveva lavorato per suo padre, il celebre architetto Antonio Niccolini, mentre Felice per il Museo nazionale di Napoli. La coppia si prodigò per ricostruire il contesto di ciascun ritrovamento, in modo che ogni edificio, monumento e oggetto non fosse solo un gioiello per gli studiosi ma anche una nitida testimonianza della vita quotidiana nell'impero romano, nelle strade affollate così come nell'intimità domestica. L'ambiziosa raccolta si avvalse della collaborazione e dei rivoluzionari metodi archeologici di Giuseppe Fiorelli, colui che suddivise Pompei in isolati (insulae) raggruppati in nove regioni (regiones) e fu tra i primi a sostenere la necessità di portare alla luce gli edifici strato dopo strato, in modo da preservare l'integrità dei siti. Inoltre, fu proprio Fiorelli a creare gli indimenticabili calchi in gesso delle vittime esposti ancora oggi a Pompei. Questa ristampa raccoglie le circa 500 litografie de "Le case ed i monumenti di Pompei".

A collection of three uniformly bound works of fiction and essays This three volume set contains; 'The Ingoldsby Legends' illustrated by Thomas Heath Robinson with a frontispiece and seven plates. Written by Richard Berham 'Legends' is a collection of myths legends poetry and ghost stories. They contain the stories 'The Tragedy' 'The Lady Rohesia' 'The Merchant of Venice' 'The Jackdaw of Rheims' 'The Dead Drummer' and 'Marie Mignot'. Thomas Robinson was a very popular book illustrator alongside his brothers Charles and Heath. He contributed illustrations to many books and journals including 'Pall Mall Magazine' and 'The Strand'. 'The Last Days of Pompeii' illustrated by Arthur A Dixon with a frontispiece and fifteen plates. This was a historical novel written by Edward Bulwer-Lytton focussing on the time in Pompeii before the destruction by Vesuvius. It was inspired by the painting by Karl Bryullov. Arthur Dixon illustrated books by many popular authors including editions of novels by Victor Hugo Charles Dickens Elsie Oxenham and Alexandre Dumas. 'Essays of Elia' with a frontispiece and five plates. This is a collection of essays by Charles Lamb including the essays 'The South-Sea House' 'Valentine's Day' 'My First Play' 'Poor Relationship' 'Sanity of True Genius' and 'The Tombs in the Abbey'. Lamb is best known for 'Tales from Shakespeare' which he wrote with his sister Mary. He also published 'The Adventures of Ulysess' 'Witches and Other Night Fears' and 'The Pawnbroker's Daughter'. Collated complete. Condition: In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally smart. Minor shelfwear to boards. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Very light offsetting to the pastedowns to the recto of the front endpaper and to the verso of the rear endpaper. Light spotting to the fore edges. Internally firmly bound though 'The Ingoldsby Legends' is lightly strained in places. Pages are bright and generally clean with just the odd spot throughout mostly due to the spotting to the fore edges. Each volume has the ribbon marker intact.
