ill., br. La lotta fra gladiatori - sabbia sporca di sangue, folle esaltate, destino sospeso del gladiatore sconfitto - è una ben nota espressione della Roma antica. Recenti ricerche, tuttavia, dimostrano che l'immaginario popolare secondo cui i gladiatori erano schiavi sventurati condannati a combattere fino alla morte da una società crudele e assetata di sangue corrisponde a una versione quanto meno limitata della realtà. Sebbene sia vero che i criminali mandati a morire nell'arena venivano massacrati, è anche vero che, all'epoca di massimo splendore degli spettacoli gladiatori, i protagonisti erano troppo preziosi e troppo considerati per essere sprecati in una lotta bruta all'ultimo sangue. Non necessariamente i gladiatori erano schiavi, spesso erano volontari che cercavano fama e ricchezza. Nella sua opera Konstantin Nossov raccoglie i risultati delle ricerche più recenti riguardanti i gladiatori, nell'intento di offrire un quadro più completo della loro storia. Illustra l'evoluzione della gladiatura, anche attraverso un ricco apparato iconografico nel quale spiccano i disegni originali di Vladimir Golubev, e descrive diversi tipi di gladiatori, il loro armamento, le loro diverse forme di combattimento, il loro stile di vita e la posizione che occupavano nella società.

Questi Signori della guerra - Stilicone, Ezio, Ricimero -, dominarono sulla base del loro potere effettivo e non per una norma giuridica.
