A fascinating collection of six engravings of battle scenes from Famiano Strada's De Thien eerste Boecken der Nederlandtsche Oorloge - a Dutch translation from the original Italian 'De Bello Belgico'. Strada's monumental work covered the epic Eighty Years War1568–1648 a religiously influenced war of liberation fought by the Seventeen Provinces of the Spanish Netherlands against the forces of the Habsburg Spanish Empire. Preceding and then forming part of the pan-European Thirty Years Wars the Dutch War of Independence ended with the Dutch Republic recognized by Spain and the major European powers. The independent Dutch were then to embark upon their remarkable Golden Age of the 17-18th centuries. The series of engraving presented here show some of the major engagements that helped shape the course of the war. They are rich in detail capturing the rush and horror of the clash of armies in the early modern period - to a degree where one can almost hear and feel the blasts of cannon and muskets crash of iron roar of men and the sound of excited horses leaping from the page. The decorative cartouches accompanying each scene provides explanatory notes on the unfolding dramas. A remarkable group of images. Frans van den Wyngaerde or Frans van den Wijngaerde 1614 – 1679 was a Flemish printmaker draughtsman and publisher. One of the leading print publishers in 17th-century Antwerp he created and published multiple reproductive prints after Peter Paul Rubens Anthony van Dyck as well as foreign artists. Famiano Strada 1572 - 1649 was an Italian Jesuit historian and moralist. Strada taught at the Collegio Romano of the Jesuits in Rome. He taught rhetoric and Latin to among others Bishop Lorenzo della Robbia and Pope Clement IX . He was fiercely anti- Tacitus because he thought that this Roman writer stood for undermining the authority of the king and gave rise to a loss of confidence in leadership. The most famous work by Famiano Strada is De Bello Belgico decades duae 1555-1590 Dutch : The War in the Low Countries and was written with the help of Alexander Farnese 1545-1592 around 1602. Contains 57 gelatin silver black and white or sepia toned photographs measuring between 2" x 1" and 5" x 4" with captions and some negatives. Edgewear a small indent on the front board and bumped corners thus very good album with near fine photographs. A young couple's photo album featuring photographs of their wedding and life together. Beverly Keister and Loren Robert Holland were married in the 1940s during a Twelfth Night Ceremony which is celebrated on the 5th of January 12 days after Christmas. Pictures of the event are in the first part of the album showing Keister receiving gifts and spending times with friend and family. Holland flew jets for the United States Air Force in World War II and many photographs show the air crafts as well as pictures of the landscape from within the cockpit. One picture shows the full interior of the jet that Holland was piloting as well as shots of other planes flying next to Holland's. There are also pictures of Holland while he was at the aviation base playing on both the boxing and basketball team. A few of the photographs show young children presumably the couple's children greeting Holland who is wearing a Groucho Marks mask. Another funny photo shows Holland holding and caring for his peculiar pets a raccoon and a monkey. An interesting photo album of a young couple marrying before the husband went off to fight in World War II. hardcover‎

Discreet duplicate stamp from library in Poland on reverse. A highly detailed and very interesting map of Holland and its former and current foreign holdings included in inset boxes. The individual provinces Dutch Republic are clearly demarcated. Rivers and hills and forests and marshes are shown pictorially - as are the shallow approaches and sandbanks along the coast. Towns and cities such as Amsterdam are also included and many depicted pictorially also. An inset box in the lower right corner shows the most southernly province Limburg. In the lower left is Flanders while the regions comprising modern-day Luxemburg and Germany fill out the map. A stunning map of the Netherlands at the turn of the century the little country having enjoyed a 'Golden Age' n which Dutch financial and commercial acumen trade science military maritime-skills and art were among the most acclaimed in the world. Off-shore in the Oceanus Germanicus is a large decorative cartouche showing armorial coat-of-arms of the seven provinces of United Provinces of the Netherlands with tables listing the administrative structure of each province. Also included are two inset boxes containing maps of the foreign possessions of the far-flung Dutch Empire. The upper inset box titled 'Batavorum Coloniae Occident: Indiis Septetrionalis Americae Implantatae' and shows the Dutch colony of 'New Neederland' located on the east coast of America. Virginia Pars Pennsylvania Philadelphia New Jork New York New Amsterdam New York City New Jarsey New Jersey Manhattan and Nova Angia New England are all shown. The inset also includes a vignette scene of the Hudson harbour at New Amsterdam New York City. The lower inset map is titled 'India Orientalis Batavorum Commerciis Potentia & Coloniis Celeberrima' and shows China and South-East Asia including India and Ceylon Indonesian islands such as Borneo Java Summatra 'Terra des Pappous Papua New Guinea and the Philippines. Japan Formosa and New Hollandia Australia can also be seen. The inset also carries a panoramic vignette of the ship-filled port at Batavia Jakarta. The map is crowded with topographical detail showing the location of rivers hills cities -such as Amsterdam and Rotterdam - towns and the network of roads canals criss-crossing Holland. The political sub-division of Holland are also shown. The precariousness of Dutch security is evident through the myriad of fortified towns and cities across the map. The sandbanks of the shallow Zuiderzee De Zuyder Zee can be seen. Haarlemmer Meer and Leydsche Meer are also identified on the map - much of this was drained and reclaimed in the 19th and 20th centuries. Large decorative title cartouche illustrating the Dutch maritime trading and agricultural richness and traditions lies off the coast in the North Sea 'Mare Germanicum vulgo De Noord Zee'. Bar scales and map reference keys can be seen beneath cartouche. Homann Erben/Heirs was a prominent German publishing firm in the European map market throughout the eighteenth century. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann the business passed to his son Christoph upon Johann's death in 1724. Christoph died in 1730 aged only 27 and the firm was inherited by subsequent Homann heirs. This changed the name of the company which was known as Homann Erben or Homann heirs. Just four years after this map was published the old Dutch Republic was ended with the creation of a Revolutionary-France-backed Batavian Republic/Commonwealth which eventually became a client state within the Napoleonic Empire. Inset box located in top left corner shows the West Frisian Islands of Texel Elieland and Der Schelling. Decorative cartouche bar scales and map reference keys lie off the coast. This map of the Dutch coast was the work of Prussian cartographer Franz Ludwig Güssefeld 1744-1807. It was drawn based on the calculations of the renowned Dutch mathematician Willebrord Snellius 1580-1626 a professor of mathematics at the University of Leiden who conceived the idea of measuring the earth using triangulation. SnelliusÂ’s discoveries helped to determine the radius of the earth as well as led to more accurate ways of measuring the distance between two cities. Founded in 1702 by Johann Baptist Homann the business passed to his son Christoph upon Johann's death in 1724.
