Bernard Nicholas Deane of Ardagh in Ireland
The penitent death of a woefull sinner: or The penitent death of John Atherton late Bishop of Waterford in Ireland: who was executed at Dublin the 5. of December 1640: with some annotations upon severall passages in it: as also the sermon with some further enlargements preached at his burial. The Second Edition
London: Printed by G.M. for W. Bladen: And are to be sold by R. Royston 1642. xii 177p. last two pages misnumbered as 177 & 179 printed 12mo with smallpoint sidebars all edges sprinkled red; front blank has a repaired tear at top corner 1.5 inches repair tissue applied to verso this blank filled with contemporary ink notes minuscule sepia nib; several lines struck through ownership signature verso of terminal leaf Jeremiah Harmon aesthete collector &c: 1763-1844. Find some smudging scattered throughout text a small perforation at p5/6 affecting sidebar an otherwise very good copy of the second edition in well-preserved and expert late 19thC polished calf with five double ruled bands and red leather label gilt date at the foot. Atherton was born 1598 in Somerset and attended Oxford. He was appointed in 1630 as Lord Bishop of Waterford and Lismore. In 1640 he was accused of engaging in "buggery" with his steward John Childe and the two were hanged in December of 1640. According to Rictor Norton's "Homosexuality in Eighteenth-Century England: A Sourcebook" they were the second such pair to have been hanged as a couple in England. This work while not dealing directly with the accusations or the trial is a contemporary account of the bishop's final days. It includes Atherton's letter to his wife and a sermon preached at his burial. In 1710 the author Bernard published another book in which he exposed several legal proceedings and conflicts between Atherton and Catholic lawyers which may have led to a conspiracy to remove him. Noted in Wing B2015. Printed by G.M. for W. Bladen: And are to be sold by R. Royston unknown books

Bernard Ireland
Jane's Naval History of World War II.

In the original dustsheet. Black cloth binding with blue title on the spine.

Jane's Naval History of World War II follows the highly successful Jane's Battleships of the 20th Century and includes another magnificent selection of colour artwork by acclaimed naval artist Tony Gibbons.

In Jane's Naval History of World War II he covers all the different types of warship that fought from the Atlantic and Arctic to the Pacific Ocean. From aircraft carriers to submarines assault ships to destroyers and cruisers his paintings bring to life the incredible variety of warships that took part in the greatest naval conflict in history.

Naval historian Bernard Ireland offers new insights to the conflict investigating how German U-boats ultimately lost the battle of the Atlantic while US submarines annihilated Japan's merchant navy. His own career in naval engineering enables him to reveal all sorts of hidden details that make Jane's Naval History of World War II a radical new contribution to 20th century history.

Jane's Naval History of World War II: In this book I have concentrated on the five issues that were central to the outcomes of the naval war of 1939-45. In my opinion these were: The War against Commerce. Germany's inability to sever the Atlantic trade routes allows Britain to survive. The War against the U-boat. Technical quality and superior intelligence beat sheer numbers. The American Submarine War against Japan. Destruction of her merchant marine leaves Japan unable to sustain the war. Amphibious Warfare. The ability to deploy decisive military strength over great distances. Aviation at Sea. Carriers provide the local air superiority necessary for a fleet to operate in hostile waters.

Bernard Ireland was a British naval engineer editor of Jane's and writer on naval matters. Ireland was educated at the Royal Dockyard School Portsmouth and the University of Southampton. Ireland worked for the Defence Research Agency in ship research. He wrote or co-authored 47 booksas well as contributing to journals and partworks on subjects related to ships and naval campaigns.

Ireland was married and had two children. He died on 8 February 2019.
Harper Collins. hardcover
