‎POEMS‎

‎London: John Booth / G.G. and J. Robinson / B. and J. White 1794. 19.5 cm. pp 2 6 152. Tiny rubbed spot to front joint otherwise very fine AS NEW unopened in the original quarter bound plain white paper spine and blue-grey boards grey endpapers paste-down not pasted down. Adds a poem at the end "Written by Mrs. Cowley on Reading the Verses of Lady Manners to Solitude" not found in the two 1793 quarto editions. ESTC T96366. Catharine Grey Lady Manners was born in County Cork Ireland where she was reared as part of the Anglo-Irish Ascendancy. A number of the poems here have Irish themes. Not a scarce book nor an important one. What is extraordinary about this copy is the condition. This is a rare opportunity to see what an 18th century book looked like on the day it was first purchased from a bookseller. It should be noted that this survival is owing to a cache of remaindered copies entering the trade after WWII. . First octavo edition. Hardcover. Octavo. John Booth / G.G. and J. Robinson / B. and J. White‎

‎POPULAR TALES OF IRISH LIFE AND CHARACTER. Illustrated by Maclise Franklin Brooke Herbert Harvey Nicholl Weigall and others‎

‎Glasgow / London: Thomas D. Morison / Simpkin Marshall Hamilton Kent no date Ca. 1890 reprint of stories published in 1829 and 1831. Thick octavo green cloth sides ruled in blind spine lettered and decorated in gilt. pp 355 22 plates appears to be complete. Text paper tanned as always page edges browned; pencil ownership inscription at front; a little leaned; rear cover lightly damp spotted and consequently a bit splayed; partial split to rear joint neatly repaired; short tear to front free endpaper; VG copy otherwise of this bulky and cheaply made book. Laid in is the clipped closing of a letter a few lines signed "A.M. Hall". " Mrs. Hall's sketches of her native land bear a closer resemblance to the tales of Miss Mitford than to the Irish stories of Banim or Griffin. They contain fine rural descriptions and are animated by a healthy tone of moral feeling and a vein of delicate humour. Her books were never popular in Ireland as she saw in each party much to praise and much to blame so that she failed to please either the Orangemen or the Roman Catholics." - Wikipedia via DNB.
