ZATTA Antonio (Venezia 1722 - 1804)
Printed in four volumes by Antonio Zatta between 1779 and 1785. Atlas among the most beautiful and complete ever published in Italy in the eighteenth century, the most famous work of Zatta. The Atlante Novissimo, as also specified in the title, is “increased on the observations made by the most famous and most recent geographers”. Among the most significant innovations there is the appearance of the new islands discovered in the Pacific Ocean by James Cook and the first Italian map of New Zealand. The illustrations were designed and drawn by his collaborators Giovanni Marco Pitteri, Anton Friedrich Busching, Pietro Antonio Novelli and engraved by Giuliano Zuliani. The first volume of the atlas is introduced by a brief essay of general geography where the author defines in a concise and precise way the elements that make up the ecliptic and equatorial grids used in the tables. Interesting is the section where he pauses to describe the phenomenon of precession of the equinoxes and the cyclical variation of the obliquity of the ecliptic. Etching, printed on contemporary laid paper, contemporary outline coloring, in good condition.

PAZZINI CARLI Vincenzo (Siena ? - 1769)
Map taken form the very rare Atlante Geografico, the first draft of the abbot Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Siena by Pazzini Carli. Many of the mapss, dated between 1788 and 1800, are engraved by Agostino Costa and then later incorporated in the work of AB Atlante Generale di Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Florence in 1819.Bartolomeo Borghi, who Vermiglioli (Biography of writers Perugini, 1829) calls "one of the best geographers of Europe", was born in 1750 in Monte del Lago, a small fraction of the town of Mansfield, in the province of Perugia, on the shores of Lake Trasimeno. Ordained in 1774, spent the first years of his term in his hometown, then to Mansfield and then Sorbello (Cortona).A passionate student of geography, first applied his knowledge to the analysis of land more familiar to him: he wrote in 1770 Description geographical, physical and natural Lake Trasimeno (which will however be given to the press for the first time only in 1821), and 1791 published in the Proceedings of Etruscan Cortona a dissertation on the geography of ancient Etruria, Umbria and Piceno, enriching both the works of a map of the regions described. Meanwhile, his fame as a cartographer, as well as a geographer, was growing, so that he get the nomination as a member of the Royal Academies of Florence and Cortona, and give him the job, by Pietro Leopoldo, to outline the paper's public land Cortona and the county of Castiglione. At the same time the geographical horizons of its activities widened considerably, and if in the Atlas Novissimo, illustrated and amplified the observations and discoveries made by the most recent and most famous cartographer Antonio Zatta (Venice 1779-1785) his contribution was still related area of Tuscany, in the Atlas geographic monthly published in Siena by Pazzini Carli between 1798 and 1800 the villages drew most of the cards and spaced from the provinces of South-East of England, the Kingdom of Denmark, Romania.A sort of dress rehearsal, the latter, his most important work, quell'Atlante General of AB. Bartolomeo Borghi, published in Florence in 1819. The Atlas, accompanied by brief descriptions of historical, political, civil and natural to introduce the papers relating to the territories belonging to each United Empire or illustrated, reflects the new geo-political structure implemented by the Congress of Vienna.

HONDIUS Jr. Jodocus (Amsterdam 1594 -1629)
Warwicum, Northampton, Hunting.
"After the death of Cornelis Claesz in 1609, Jodocus Hondius II became the new publisher of the work, composed by 7 parts in 1, with engraved title-page and 220 full-page engraved maps in text. All the maps were newly engraved and slightly larger in size, because Hondius was not able to acquire the original plates. With the new plates the work was definitely improved and enjoyed a growing demand of the public, which at that time had the choice between the Atlas Minor by Mercator and Bertius' Tabularum Geographicarum. The 219 plates, with the oval world map appearing twice, were produced to illustrate a new version of the geography of Bertius, published in 1616. According to King, their correct attribution is by Hondius, after Mercator and Hondius, taken from Bertius, who was only responsible for revising his text again" [cfr. G. King, Miniature Antique Maps]. Incisione in rame, perfette condizioni. A superior rival to the pocket Ortelius atlas appeared about 1598, under the imprint of Barent Langenes and Cornelis Claesz. Claesz also published the Tabularum Geographicarum contractarum libri septem, edition with texy by Petrus Bertius, in 1600.
Bibliografia Mortimer 184; Olschki 4539; Cockle 548; Shirley T.FRR-1a. - Nordenskiold Collection I, p.156 no.73; Dufour/La Gumina, p. 85; Ganado 1985 S. 231; Stylianou 81, Navari 33; Zacharakis/Scutari 1499/1003-1518/1022; King, Miniature Antique Maps, pp. 62/3. Nice miniature map of the island, taken from Dialoghi Notturni del Capitano Francesco Ferretti Cavaglier di S. Stefano published in Ancona in 1604. It's the second edition of the rare “Isolario” by Ferretti, that provides scientific knowledge and military, as well as geography and mathematics. The geographical part is the main body of the work, with 28 maps depicting the main islands in the Mediterranean represented with the unusual circular shape, finely carved by Michelangelo Marelli. The maps derive from those engraved by Girolamo Porro for the L’isole Piu Famose Del Mondo Descritte Da Thomaso Porcacchi Da Castiglione, published for the first time in 1572. Each map is enclosed within an ornamental frame, and shows the lines of the winds. The title, enclosed at the top, is very large and is expressed by the formula Ragionevol’ Forma et vera postura del’ Isola di, followed by the name of the island; the maps are small but very accurate. The work of Ferretti was reprinted in 1608 with the title Arte Militare. Literature Mortimer 184; Olschki 4539; Cockle 548; Shirley T.FRR-1a. - Nordenskiold Collection I, p.156 no.73; Dufour/La Gumina, p. 85; Ganado 1985 S. 231; Stylianou 81, Navari 33; Zacharakis/Scutari 1499/1003-1518/1022; King, Miniature Antique Maps, pp. 62/3.

PORCACCHI Tommaso (1530 - 1585
Descrittione dell'Isole Hebridi, & Orcadi
Map taken form “L’isole Piu Famose Del Mondo Descritte Da Thomaso Porcacchi Da Castiglione Aretino E Intagliate Da Girolamo Porro Padovan” by Tommaso Porcacchi (ca. 1532-1576), humanist and scholar from Castiglion Fiorentino. The geographical interests cultivated since Pomponio Mela in 1557 gave life to the treatise published in 1572 by the company between the bookseller Simone Galignani and the Paduan engraver Girolamo Porro, who used the typography of Giorgio Angelieri (with the privilege of 10 years July 1572). The volume, with a dedication by Galignani to Don Giovanni d'Austria, presents the magnificent calcographic plates by Porro (a second edition, conspicuously augmented with text and tables, came out in 1576, then again, posthumously, in 1590, 1604, 1605, 1620 and 1686). In the dedicatory letter Porro tells of having been the promoter of the operation and of having entrusted Porcacchi with writing a book on the islands, reserving the illustration. The model is that of the "isolari", on which however Porcacchi inserts the spirit of ancient chorographies, adding a physical, historical and cultural description for each island. The concept is very broad (including peninsulas, large islands such as England or entire continents: North America), but in the "Prohemio" Porcacchi provides a glossary of geographical terms that testifies to the effort to correctly use the terminology of the discipline (see Franco Pignatti, Porcacchi Tommaso, in "Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani" - Volume 85, 2016). In the text there are maps of islands engraved on half a page, including the planisphere - reduction of the wall map of Camocio of 1567 and the "carta marina”.Copperplate placed at the top of the sheet also including a descriptive part, in very good condition.

DUVAL Pierre (1618 - 1683)
The Mapping of Africa, pp. 294, 295). Etching, circa 1656, with contemporary outline colour, good condition.Example of the second state, with the imprint of Jacques Lagniet and the date 1661.The map comes from the very rare sheet entitled “L’Europe Par le Sieur Du Val Geographe Ord. du Roy”, from which it was cut at the time and laid down on contemporary laid paper support, to form a small atlas, as certified by the ancient ink inscriptions on some of the maps.We have not found bibliography on this sheet of Europe, we therefore refer to the scarce literature on the sheets representing the other continents.According with Philip Burden “The purpose of this rare curiosity by Pierre Duval is not known. It forms part of a set of the four known continents. It can be dated to apporximately 1656 […] The second state bears the additional imprint of Jacques Lagniet and the date 1661” (cf. Burden, The Mapping of North America, pp. 417-418, n. 322). The map of Asia is recently described by Jason Hubbard: “This miniature map of Japan is on a sheet of maps of Asia. Besides the map of the Asian continent there are 17 detailed maps including Turkey, the Holy Land, Georgia and Arabia. […] This map was issued as a loose sheet of Asia maps; similar maps are known for Africa, America and Europe” (cf. Japoniae Insulae, The Mapping of Japan, p. 201).Richard Betz describes 3 states of the broadsheet of Africa: without the date, with the imprint of Jacques Lagniet and the date 1661, and with traces of erasure on his addres (cf. Betz, The Mapping of Africa, pp. 294, 295). According Hubbard the third state of the map of Asia is only an assumption.Of a second state of the broadsheet of Europe, we are able to find only the example at the Bibliotheque National de France. cf. J. Hubbard, Japoniae Insulae. The Mapping of Japan, pp. 199-201, n. 28; cf. Burden, The Mapping of America, n. 322, II/II; cf. Pastoureau (1984) p. 136; cf. Betz, The Mapping of Africa, pp. 294, 295, n. 85.
