‎Rare première et unique édition. Adam de Gurovski (1805-1866), publiciste polonais, est l’auteur de plusieurs écrits politiques. Ses “Impressions et souvenirs, promenade en Suisse en 1845” paraissent directement en français à Lausanne, en 1846. Le narrateur s’y présente lui-même comme un Russe. Ses prises de position politiques ne sont pas sans importance pour comprendre l’attitude de Gurovski, en 1845, face au conflit du Sonderbund qui se prépare. Sa critique virulente des radicaux suisses est le produit direct de sa condamnation, après son exil français, de l’insurrection de Varsovie. Sur d’autres plans cependant, c’est son univers culturel proprement polonais qui détermine le jugement qu’il porte sur la Suisse protestante: à propos de Bâle, Gurovski affirme par exemple que “le culte de la banque y égale celui de Calvin”. Au-delà de la satire politique et sociale, un tel récit de voyage témoigne du fait que la Suisse, au milieu du XIXe siècle, apparaît comme divisée et qu’elle se prête par conséquent beaucoup plus difficilement qu’auparavant à un regard idéalisant.Le voyage proprement traverse l’Allemagne - Carlsruhe - puis la Suisse. - Bâle, Jura et Neuchâtel - A Berne notre voyageur remarque ‘A chaque coin des rues des groupes violemment animés, l’air des rues et des arcades littéralement empesté par les exhalaisons enflammées par l’odeur nauséabonde des bières, des eaux de vie, du punch et du kirsch, et pour Fribourg il ajoute un long exposé sur les Jésuites et la religion ... puis: la bibliothèque de la Ville, mise avec une grande facilité à l’usage des étrangers, contribua à rendre agréable mon séjour prolongé à Fribourg ... les bataillons réunis à Fribourg avaient une tenue peut-être plus martiale que dans les autres cantons agités. Plusieurs semaines de mon séjour ici ‘se sont écoulées sans que je me sois aperçu de leur rapidité, grâce aux Jésuites, à la bibliothèque de la ville et à l’aimable société de l’excellant marquis de Nicolay, émigré volontaire’.
