‎"Les souvenirs de la comtesse Leutrum resteront parmi les plus probants témoignages qui nous fassent connaître l'état d'âme de l'Autriche pendant l'époque de l'avant-guerre et celui de l'Allemagne au début des hostilités. L'auteur s'exprime aussi nettement que le permettent les convenances de sa situation. D'ailleurs, Hongroise par son père et par son mari, elle garde pour la vieille et sainte Russie de sa famille maternelle une affection presque mystique ; mais, comme elle écrivait son livre au printemps de 1917, avant l'avènement de Lénine, elle se berçait d'espérances qui se dissipent aujourd'hui. (...) De 1903 à 1906, après la mort de sa mère, la jeune fille entra, sur le désir de son père, dans la maison du généralissime de l'armée autrichienne, l'archiduc Frédéric , et de sa femme, Isabelle d'Autriche. Elle succédait à la comtesse Aerenthal et occupait la position tenue peu auparavant par la comtesse Chotek, dont le mariage avec l'héritier du trône, l'archiduc François-Ferdinand, avait été la suite obligée d'une liaison trop tôt découverte. L'auteur évite les indiscrétions scandaleuses, si abondantes qu'elles puissent être, sur la cour de Vienne, estimant peu délicat de desservir les gens dont on a partagé en sous-ordre l'intimité. Elle excepte toutefois de cette réserve les conversations politiques qui appartiennent à l'histoire et qui déjà révélaient des intentions destinées à se traduire en actes sanglants. Le comte Aerenthal y figure avec un cynisme parfait ; d'avance, il traçait le programme machiavélique à suivre pour attirer la Russie dans le piège : entreprise difficile, concluait l'archiduc Frédéric, tant cette puissance se montrait débonnaire. La guerre trouva la comtesse Leutrum, veuve après une courte séparation de corps, réfugiée chez des parents de son mari à Munich ; c'est de là que, après des péripéties intéressantes, accompagnées de notations curieuses, elle put gagner la Hollande pour s'y établir au milieu d'amis qui avaient conservé le souvenir de sa famille, afin d'y attendre et obtenir sa rentrée dans la nationalité russe..."
