In this guide the first part (pp. 1 to 209) deals with the origins and privileges of the various classes and kinds of Portuguese nobility "Nobreza", followed by sections such as "Das officios mecanicos incompativeis com a nobreza, e destructivos de seus brilhantes privilegios" (pp. 181-9), et "Dos crimes destruidores da nobreza". The second and third parts, with continuous pagination, deal with "Fidalgos" (pp. 211-288) and "Cavalleiros" (pp. 289-338), followed by "Leis primordiaes da nobreza Lusitana". Innocêncio noted that although the laws had been changed by his time, he still considered this an interesting and useful book. ‎"L'original portugais de cet ouvrage fut rédigé en 1940 à Louvain où l'auteur travaillait sous la direction du P. Charles, qui en écrivit alors la préface. Son objet n'est pas l'exposé des multiples réalisations des missionnaires du Patronat portugais, mais l'histoire même de cette institution, trop sommairement et de ce fait injustement appréciée par les historiens des missions. Mgr Olichon, par exemple, est cité plusieurs fois comme témoin des clichés courants sur le « schisme de Goa » au siècle dernier, la déficience des méthodes missionnaires portugaises, etc. Dans les multiples conflits qui depuis le XVIIe s. opposèrent le Patronat et la Propagande, les torts auraient toujours été du même côté, alors qu'en fait la grande crise du XIXe s. reposa sur un « déplorable malentendu ». L'utilité d'un tel ouvrage, exposant de l'intérieur l'histoire du Patronat, en essayant de faire comprendre par sympathie le point de vue portugais, est incontestable. C'est bien pour cela d'ailleurs que l'auteur, sur la suggestion d'éminents compatriotes, a fait traduire son livre dans une langue lui permettant d'atteindre un plus vaste public. Souhaitons donc que les grandes synthèses d'histoire missionnaire s'appliquent à en tenir compte." L'auteur expose les deux points de vue : celui du Portugal et celui de la Congrégation romaine de la Propagande. En bon disciple du P. Charles, il fait un grand effort pour comprendre ce dernier point de vue. Mais le lecteur étranger ne partagera pas toujours la conviction pourtant bien raisonnée de l'auteur ; il continuera facilement à y voir la défense d'une thèse et inclinera aisémemt vers l'attitude de la Propagande quand elle avait en vue le bien supérieur de l'évangelisation.
